Tuesday
Cold. Grey. Rainy.
Tomorrow’s trip will be a nice change of pace.

I got something on the order of 3½ hours of sleep last night and got up at 07:00 this morning, yet I didn’t have the usually overwhelming urge to nap. (Edit: I did doze for a bit between 11:30 and 12:30 this morning, it seems.) Maybe I’ll compensate for it by hitting the rack early tonight.

and I got together for drawing this afternoon. At least there were no annoying pyramid scheme get-togethers going on in the background.

Monday
The day started with a visit from ‘s dad. He came over to help me “winterize” the swamp cooler. I’ll be glad when we can make the switch to central air… It’s been a few months since I’ve been on the roof; it’s a great view. We’ve talked about building a new deck in the back yard, possibly one that will afford an almost roof-like view of the valley. We shall see…

We ran a couple of errands and, on a whim, decided to see…

I have a new addition to my favorite superhero movies list. This was part 60s James Bond-like thriller, part superhero action flick… and all cool. I give it a “thumbs-up with an okay.” Go see it if you haven’t already. And if you have, see it again. The trailers for Cars and Episode III: RotS showed before the movie; they looked good on the big screen. No, on the “Super Screen;” we saw The Incredibles on the Cricket Theatre Super Screen (the screen that would have been an IMAX screen, if Larry Miller hadn’t been too cheap to pay for the licensing). And the Pixar short before the movie, Boundin’, was hilarious.

Tonight was Poker Night. And, if you can believe it: We actually played poker. , , , and played. Twas a good night.

Sunday
Today was a very lax day. Mainly because I slept a good portion of it away; I didn’t wake up until nearly 13:30. I knew that I was tired, but I didn’t think that I was that tired. I watched a few of the early games and did some laundry, but I didn’t really do anything until it was time to head to ‘s for the Browns-Ravens game.

We went to Mr. and Mrs. ‘s house for the Browns-Ravens matchup. The last game was Week 1, the Ravens lost and I wound up VERY drunk, thanks to penalty shots of vodka.

Tonight was a different story. Tonight was the return of RB Jamal Lewis, following his two-game suspension. Tonight was also “Pitch Black,” the debut of the Ravens’ all-new, all-black uniforms.

The Ravens had only had field goals on the board going into halftime, but they went to the lockers with a slight 12 – 10 lead. The second half was more hardscrabble defensive, but added a Jamal Lewis rushing TD as well as a game-clinching 106 yard, NFL record-setting INT/TD by Ed Reed.

I had a few shots of Bacardi Razz (for the Browns’ TDs and field goal), but took the lion’s share of the abuse tonight. And… we both took a shot, per an agreement with , late in the Fourth Quarter.

Saturday (abbreviated)
I spent most of the day cobbling together a new computer. Zaq came over to help me set up FreeBSD on it. There were a number of hardware “complications,” so I’ll be spending some time looking at what went not-so-right and what I’ll have to do to get things into working order.

I had dinner with and , then we came back here and hung out before Nyx and I headed to bowling. The three of us chatted, talked geek… and we compiled the “Who Has More Reasons to be Jealous of Whom” list:

Person A*
Person B*
Far away
Local
Under 21
Legal (fully)
McDinkle’s
Multinational technology company
Minimum wage
Crazy bank
Hoopty (speculation)
Phat ride
Lives at home
pwnz own crib
Not too experienced
Pimp
Has emotional fucktard
Has self-avowed caustic bitch
Dude Looks Like a Lady
Leaving on a Jet Plane
Should have stock in Revlon, Max Factor or Maybelline
Good complexion
Sees no need for plans for the future
Synapses fire properly

* – names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Then, it was off to bowling; Kevin (the new guy) met us there. showed up a little later. I bowled eleven games; I think that my high score was 165, but I’ll verify that later. On to breakfast… Staci, Pat and Brent put in appearances. We talked about embarrassing teacher stories, laughed way too much and created lots of new in-jokes.

And then the evening came to a close.

Tomorrow, I’m not sure what I’m doing during the day; tomorrow night we travel to the home of and his missus for the rematch of the Cleveland-Baltimore game. This time, I’ll remember to eat something before indulging (or is that “inflicting”) penalty shots.

  • The new take on Victor Freis, Mr. Freeze on the new KidsWB cartoon The Batman, seems… wrong. One of the things that made Mr. Freeze such a good villain – and a tragic character – was his origin. In the new cartoon, he was just a crook with an obsession… and it cost him dearly. I think that they could have done better with this one.

Tonight’s Justice League Unlimited got Batman dead to rights. It was a rerun of “This Little Piggy,” and in it, Batman… sings. Good episode.

It was nominally warm today. It was a pleasant surprise.

Coffee was… just Jess and me. I read some comics and flipped through a few magazines. I checked out a few model railroading magazines and have renewed my interest in removing the futon from the HCC and setting up a table for my train and monorail. But then there’s the issue of the cats… I also did a little drawing. More – and regular – practice is needed. But, it could be worse: I haven’t regressed to drawing stick figures. Yet.

Thursday
Let’s get this out of the way:

  • I wrote a rather pointed post-election treatise last night.
  • I received a few responses. (Good, that’s what I wanted.)
  • I expected a bit of a flame war… and the 10th Letter Twins, and , didn’t disappoint me. Something that surprised me, however: I was expecting angry posts towards me, not towards respondents. That was a bit short-sighted of me, but that’s life.
  • I did not intervene in the ensuing verbal sparring. Hell, it was a full-blown knockdown, drag-out slobber-knocker for a bit. And, while I might not have agreed with all of the sentiments expressed (the comparisons to the Klan, as a prime example), I commend both ladies for sticking to their guns… and, more importantly, being able to lay down said guns at the end of the day. More or less.

Hopefully all of the name-calling is out of the way. We, as a country, have work to do. There were a lot of wounds opened and they are going to be raw for some time. I would like to think that we could find a way to bridge our differences and find a way open dialogue with each other. Especially if we remember that we don’t have to agree on every issue… but it doesn’t hurt to at least hear what the other side has to say. If we still don’t agree after that, oh well.

Of course, if that doesn’t happen, I’ll be quite happy to sell tickets to the next round of “Political Smackdown Deathmatch”.

We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim

Let the truth of love be lighted
Let the love of truth shine clear

Quote of the Day
Abe Jenkins, the villain formerly known as “The Beetle,” was part of a villains-turned-“heroes” group called The Thunderbolts. I put quotes around “heroes” because the Thunderbolts’ original premise was a ruse: Get in good with the nations of the world, make them trust you… and then exploit them ruthlessly. There was just one problem: Most of the team liked being on the side of the “good guys.” As a member of the Thunderbolts, Jenkins was known as the high-tech armored hero, “Mach I.” Eventually, some of the team turned themselves into the authorites. Upon his parole, Jenkins decided to reform the Thunderbolts. He recruits former T-bolt, and his former flame, Melissa Gold, known as “Songbird:”

Melissa: You’re really going ahead with this? With a new Mach suit… What number are you up to? Four?
Abe: One more upgrade and I’ll have to hide a kid and a monkey in my rear hatch.
Melissa: I don’t get it.
Abe: You’re too young.

Wednesday
I don’t usually go off on politically-motivated tangents, but I’m about to now. And, quite frankly, if it upsets anyone, I don’t care. If it causes people to drop me from their lists, so be it. And if it sparks a flame war, I hope that people come with the fires of Hell behind them… and are prepared for equally-charged retorts.

That said, I think that most people know that I am not a fan of our President-Elect. But, he got the job. Accept it. Deal with it. Move on. I’m not overly happy with the outcome of yesterday’s election, but there’s really nothing that can be done about it now, is there?

I woke up this morning to a lot of “If you voted for Bush, you’re an idiot” journal entries on my friends list. I find it nothing short of “amazing” that people whose judgment I would normally deem “sound” and “rational” would resort to such childish and unnecessary acts as name-calling… simply because they didn’t get their way. Have people gone from 18-and-over to grade school… no pre-school… mentality just because the election didn’t go the way they wanted? It looks that way to me.

I have friends who back the Republican Party. Should I abandon them just because we differ on politics? After all, if we don’t agree politically, how could we ever agree about anything else? Does the fact that they voted Republican mean that they threw their votes away? What about my friends who voted for Ralph Nader? Were their votes “empty,” as well?

If you said “yes,” to these, my response to you is – and pay close attention here: “That is utter and complete bullshit.”

As long as my friends voted their conscience, then I back their votes. Republican. Democrat. Independent. In fact, if they examined the facts and determined that NO candidate adequately represented their issues and opinions, I would even back them if they wrote in Mickey Mouse. As long as they voted according to their beliefs and mores, I would – and will – back them up. Every. Time.

Want to move to Canada? Go right ahead. Oh yeah, one other thing: Just because Canada is part of North America does NOT mean that it’s “United States of America: North.” I’m pretty sure that you’ll find a few things there that don’t sit well with your rose-colored perspective, either. But, hey… sorry… “eh”… that’s your prerogative. I hope that the Great White North treats you and your families well. Don’t forget to dress warmly.

Now, for those of you who have seen the outcome of the election, were not pleased by it and want to do something about it other than bitch, moan, and whine: Welcome to the real world. What can you do? You can, and I know that this will come as a shock to many, get active at a local level. That’s right: Participate. Contrary to popular opinion, being part of your affiliated party can be more than just a spectator sport. Make sure that the people who will be representing you are doing just that: Representing you.

Two of my friends worked for different local campaigns in this election. I told them about people spouting off and calling people “stupid” or “idiots,” based on the way that they voted. I find it heartening that their comments were complimentary.

The first one had the following to say:

…they shouldn’t name call, and calling Bush-supporters ‘idiots’ is neither productive, nor informed. A vote is a personal thing, to which all voters have their own voice. Anyone who tries to bully someone into voting against their conscience because their choice is ‘stupid’ isn’t respecting the sanctity of that individual’s right as a citizen to vote as they please. Granted, Bush wasn’t my first choice for president, but I had my say, and so did the rest of the country — if the rest of the country felt Bush was better qualified, then so be it.

We need more citizen candidates, IMHO. Because, if privilege is requisite for public office, then you may as well bring back the aristocracy and monarchy. At this time, I feel that our system of government (on a national level) represents an Oligarchy of the privileged, not ‘common-folk’ like you and I.

I think the country would be better served if our campaign rules resembled that of Germany – candidates in Germany aren’t allowed to talk about other candidates, and can only dispense their platform, and answer questions that takes care of smear campaigning and all candidates get matching air time.

My other friend had the following to say:

A political campaign is a porous organization. You can join at just about any level. And you’re remembered for your time. The largest opportunities occur during campaign season.

I then asked how would one go about getting involved.

Find out who your precinct chair and delegates are. Get to know people with similar ideologies. Find out what [the party’s] events are. Volunteer! Volunteers are remembered. In a larger campaign, you might night not get a lot of face time with the candidate, but in the campaign I worked on, [local candidate] knew everybody on a first name basis.

Go to your party’s headquarters and say that you want to be more involved. They will find something for you.

His reasons for wanting to get more involved:

  1. Ownership
  2. Involvement
  3. Efficacy

Ownership of a feeling of pride for his role in his party.
Involvement in the process of making his voice heard.
Efficacy in knowing that being involved has an effect – he, alone, was responsible for at least 200 votes for his party’s candidate.

President Bush will be a “lame duck” in 2008. The Republican Party will be grooming his successor over the next four years. There are rumours that Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the Democrat’s darling for that election cycle. Whether or not this comes to pass, only time will tell. Something that many people seem to forget: There are more than two parties in the American political system. Yes, the Democratic and Republican parties get all the press, but that doesn’t mean that the other parties’ candidates aren’t worthwhile. Research the issues that are important to you. Find the candidate who best aligns with your beliefs. Get involved. Make your voice known.

In Western formal choral tradition, there’s an aim for a blend so you cannot distinguish where the parts are coming from. With congregational singing, I could drive up to the church and they could be singing and I could tell you who was there, because the individual timbres of a voice never disappear. That congregational style is one of the things that I think is important for democracy — the individual does not have to disappear, and it does not operate as an anticollective expression.

Tuesday
Today was a decent day. I had coffee with rare and elusive this morning. My superpower also kicked in: I was given another monitor. 17″ CRT. All I need to do now is build the new machine that I’ve been threatening to build for the past couple of months.

Today was also Election Day. I voted and I hope that everyone made it to their polling place and cast their ballots. And that’s all that I have to say about that.

Actually, no it isn’t.

<rant>

I was checking out other journals this morning and I came across a picture of a little girl in a “Vote for ___” t-shirt. She was four-year-old. In the accompanying text, the mother noted that “…I decked my 4 year old out in her Kerry/Edwards gear and sent her off to school. She loves John Kerry! What in the Nine Hells?! I realize that campaigns make “show your support” clothing for all ages, but that statement struck me as… more than a little “odd.”

I don’t want to sound TOO peevish, but what does a 4-year-old really know about any other candidate? Four-years-old?! Please. Don’t foist your political agenda on someone who’s barely old enough to decide between having Cheerios or Cocoa Puffs for breakfast… and then claim that they like said candidate.

Jess has a 10-year old nephew who has begun forming his own opinions about the election process; he has even said for whom he would vote, if he was of age. The difference between him and the girl in the picture (besides the six year gap) is: He’s old enough to understand some of the issues and has asked questions about things that he didn’t understand. Granted, because of his age, there were some things that could only be explained to a certain extent, but he was given answers that he could wrap his head around. And, to the best of my knowledge, the answers that he was given were grounded in the facts, not our opinions of “you should like Candidate X or Candidate Y because…”

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were definitely right with the song Teach Your Children. Explain the election process and some of the issues to your kids. Make sure that they grow up educated about the process. And if you don’t know how it works, find out before you misinform your kids.

Sunday
Last night was fun. We had trick-or-treaters! I know that for most of you, this might not be a big thing, but as far as we can remember: This is the first time that Jess and I have had costumed crusaders come to the door (while we were home) in the four years we’ve been together. And, it wasn’t just little kids; we had a few teens who joined in the fun. We went to two parties: One at and ‘s and one at Kate and Perry’s. Pictures. Jess whipped up my costume for me – in three days. I think she did a helluva job. Hopefully, next time I need a costume, she won’t have to come to the rescue at the eleventh hour because of other peoples’ failure to deliver as promised. (BTW: If anyone has a picture of Larry, please let me know. Somehow I managed to miss getting one.)

It was snowing on the way home, last night. Nothing major. It’s Utah. And we’re in the first of Utah’s eight months of winter. You learn to accept it cope. I woke up this morning to about 2″ of snow. We had a brief power outage last night, too. I reset the clock before going to bed… but neglected to adjust for the end of Daylight Savings Time. I looked at the clock and thought, “Oh, I slept later than I’d planned.” Then I looked at the time on my phone. Then it all clicked.

Otherwise, today has been a fairly lazy day. I talked with Bret for a while during the Steelers-Patriots game. We watched most of the second quarter “together.” Unlimited calls on the weekends are good. That Roethlisburger kid has the stuff. I think that he was just about the only thing missing from the Steelers’ game package. I caught up with the other Steelers fan on my speed dial – my uncle – too. All seems to be well in New York.

Football

Baltimore at Philadelphia

10 – 15

The Ravens played a good defensive game… but it wasn’t quite enough. The combined losses of RB Jamal Lewis and TE Todd Heap definitely show. Other members of the offense have stepped up admirably, but the overall performance just isn’t the same. On the plus side, Jamal will be back next week and Todd will be back a week or two after that.

Terrell Owens, the almost-Raven, looked good… even though it was on the other side of the ball. He scored a late 4th Quarter TD and did a victory dance that mocked Ray Lewis’ pre-game dance. I think that served to fuel the Ravens’ fire to attempt a comeback.

Also, congratulations to the Eagles on a 7-0 start for the first time in their franchise history.

Stray Toasters

  • I just had a completely random thought. Even by my standards. I mean anyone who has a regular section of their journal posts dedicated to the random things that just “pop up” in their head already has some random things… but I think that this one takes the cake: I’m watching the Bears-Niners game on ESPN. The Bears’ place kicker just put up a field goal. Some kickers will point to the sky after a successful kick, as if to say, “Thank you, Lord.” The Baptist in me has no problem with this.

The random thought that immediately flashed through my head was: “What if an NFL team had a Satanist on the squad and after every good kick he pointed to the ground?”

This was followed by nominally more sane thoughts of: “What if practitioners of other faiths made similar displays after a touchdown, field goal, home run, goal-shattering dunk?” How would the American masses deal with a Hindu or Buddhist having a religious moment? Especially if it was something that was far-removed from their Judeo-Christian mores. Like a (“Whirling”) Dervish or a Shivite getting their dance on. (Granted, the celebration might last longer that a game’s quarter…) Or a Buddhist folding him- or herself into the Lotus position.

Things that make you go “Om….” I mean “Hmm.” Or something.

  • I also took new pictures of Sissy and the kittens. Finally.
  • Tracking Tricks and Treats – Five kids and one adult rank Halloween candies
  • There was a funny Fantastic Four homage – or parody – on tonight’s episode of The Simpsons
  • I never realized that there was a falling paper problem.
  • Nigel Uno (‘Number 1’ from Codename: Kids Next Door) as a Borg for Hallowe’en. *laughs*
  • “I estimate that building an entire starship, top to bottom will take me about two months. Give or take a day.”
“Nifty. Is there anything that I can do to help?”
“Yes, but the estimate goes up to seven months.”

  • The post-Rick Fox Vanessa Williams is still just as good-looking as the pre-Rick Fox (and with-Rick Fox) one.
  • I’m playing family travel agent again. *twitch*
  • I was a latecomer to the Harry Potter phenomenon. I don’t think that I started listening to the first book until shortly after I saw the first movie. But, I like the series. Tonight, HBO aired Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets… Revealed. It was a neat behind-the-scenes look at the second movie.
  • “President Declares Death Unamerican”
(The entire Death series of comics is pretty funny.)

  • The writer or storyboard artist for the latest commercial for ATV Off-Road Fury 3(for the PlayStation2) must have been a fan of Monsters, Inc.
  • The 100 Scariest Movie Moments is on Bravo. Stephen King’s Cujo is #58. But that’s not the point. Well, it is. Kind of. Dan Pintauro was talking about being the kid in the movie. I wasn’t 100% sure about this, so I checked this out and confirmed: He was the same Danny Pintauro who was in Who’s the Boss? (And check out the trivia on that page, just below the cast listing. O_o ?!?)

And that’s all for now.

Namaste.
