Tuesday : 16 August 05
Waking up and getting up has never been easy… but I did it this morning without much ado. Up. On the way. Stop for caffeination. On to work. The work day wasn’t bad. I worked out at lunch. Back to the office for the second half of the day.

This evening was rather lax. I didn’t do much. And I only logged on to City of Heroes long enough to see if was there, so that I could ask him a question. He wasn’t there; I logged out. I managed to find him elsewhere online. After taking a long, circuitous route up and around much more of I-215 than was necessary, I headed over to his place so that we could decide how to deal with part of his character’s job for the Shadowrun game. I think that we found a viable – and fast-playing – solution. We’ll test out the theory next week.

Monday : 15 August 05
I slept in a little this morning – about forty-five minutes. It was nice to be able to do so. I pulled myself out of bed, got ready, and we were out the door. Mistake #1 on my part: Not stopping to get something to purge the blood in my caffeinestream. Oh, well.

Work was good… despite the fact that I desperately wanted to conduct inner eyelid studies on more than one occasion.

After work, it was a quiet evening in.

  • ‘Nine is running at full speed, with the video card running smoothly. I am rather happy about this development. It also means that I am one processor away from having another computer around here, since I kept the second motherboard that I got when I was having problems getting the video card to run.
  • I neglected to mention something yesterday: While out with , someone called his cell phone. It took me about five seconds to recognize that it was his phone making noise. It took at least another seven for me to identify just what his ringtone was: The Spirit of Radio by Rush. I was immediately full of ringtone envy.
  • Gummy worms. *nod*
  • The site for X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse has “unlocked” a new character from the game: Sunfire. And it looks as though they are using both the Marvel Universe version and the “Age of Apocalypse” version.
  • I read Marvel’s The Ultimates 2: Annual #1 yesterday. It was an interesting story, told from the point of S.H.I.E.L.D Director, General Nick Fury. It was a different spin on a “superhero” book. When I hit the last page, I literally laughed out loud. The plot twist made buying the issue completely worth the purchase price.

Sunday : 14 August 05
I woke up to a phone call from , saying that he wouldn’t be going on this morning’s bike ride. So, I set about getting ready and getting out of the house. And I did it. I rode down to the trail head. No one was there.

So I rode alone.

I made good time from 64th South to 33rd South. There’s a small park at 33rd and 11th West. I called Perry and asked him to meet me there so that I could drop off a piece of plastic crack. He warned me to… be careful… while I waited. Apparently, this is one of “a few” parks where people go to hook up with other people. Great. In fact, I think I had some guy look me over as he drove through the parking lot. *sigh* It didn’t really bother me – I’ve had guys hit on me before – but it did amuse me to some degree. Perry and I talked for a bit and then I got back on the bike and on the trail.

My plan was to go to 21st South and just head back home from there. And I did. Unfortunately, something decided to “enhance” my outdoors experience by causing me to get a flat rear tire. At 28th South. 28th South. Which put me almost 40 “blocks” from the trail head. And another three-and-a-half miles from there to the house. I called to ask her to meet me. And, I walked. I called my father, to “keep me company” while I walked. Things are well on that side of the country.

Back home for a shower, change of cloths…. and we were off to meet for brunch at Ruth’s Diner. The food and the company were both rather good. From there, we dropped in to visit and then back home. Nox, called back a little later and suggested meeting for dinner. We went to Ruby Tuesday’s, for 9:00 on a Sunday night, it was a little slow… but not for long. Our waiter apologized later for them being short-staffed and any delays/problems in service. Um… WHAT problems?! From the level of service that we received, you would never have known that they were understaffed. After dinner, Nox came by for a bit…

The Bold Adventures of Bolty: Novice Superhero at Large
After he headed home, Nox and I headed to Paragon City to take on some of the criminal element. A little earlier, I took a side trip to one of the local Icon shops – it was time for a new look. I walked out with a fresh fade, some new threads… and the same ass-whoopin’ attitude. Mm-hm, that’s right!

Then Akrael (Nox’ character) and I headed to Perez Park to mete out a little justice. We looked good doing it, too.

We did a fine job. And by “fine” I mean “We survived.” And we did survive… until that last group of Clockworks decided that they didn’t like fleshy meatsacks intruding on their territory. They ganged up on us and we went down faster’n a cheap seaport hooker during shore leave. Yeah. It was that bad. So, we licked our wounds and decided to call it a night. But there will be a reckoning.

Namaste.

Today was a good day, all around. Work. Lunch (Maulday!) Work. Home.

Tonight’s Clitorati was good. and Land put in guest appearances. The conversations were as scattered as usual. And, I even remembered to look for a few books so that I could amass some information about something that I intend to introduce in the Shadowrun game. From there, most of us headed to Cheers: North for a bite to eat. We found out that Karen, our usual bartender/server, will no longer be working at the bar. Which means that she won’t be our server (not to mention our workstations) any longer.

Hover may soon go from “useless superpower” to “new best friend.” Once again, it saved my life. I was getting shot at by some Trolls while trying to clear a mission. was with me for this one. I came close to dying when I hovered straight up. Out of gunfire range. After the Trolls lost interest in me, I floated back down and we finished the mission. By this time I was tired – and it was late – so I called it a night.

(15:28:13) : I’m still feeling twinges of guilt about liking this damned Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffet song.
(15:28:48) : dude…get over it..it’s been almost a week since you’ve mentioned it…there’s nazi’s that don’t have that much guilt…

Thursday : 11 August 05
After waking up this morning, I just couldn’t pull it together. So, I crawled back into bed for a bit. I went in a little later than usual (nearly two hours), but that’s why I put in a few extra hours on the front ends of my work weeks: It gives me some leeway for the tail end of the week. Work wasn’t bad. The lunchtime workout was good.

I came home after work, I plopped down in one of the living room chairs… and fell asleep for an hour-and-a-half. And I had the hardest time waking up. No, that’s not entirely correct. I had a hard time wanting to stay awake. But I did.

and I met for dinner at Cheers. We ate. We chatted. We took in some decent people-watching. It was nice to hang out with Ms. ; it made for a nice end to the day.

Tonight’s gaming was all about working off the experience debt from Wednesday night’s debacle. had a mission, so I decided to help him with it. He exemplared me to his level (which also helps to clear XP debt more quickly) and we headed into action. I ran this same mission a few nights ago with a larger group. We had our collective asses handed to us, then and tonight. But, tonight’s run wasn’t too bad. We cleared the mission and life was good again.

I was talking with about how lame “Hover” is as a power, but I had to (grudgingly) admit that it has come in handy a couple of times. And that reminded me of this:

Wednesday : 10 August 05
Aside from waking up (after too little sleep), today has been rather painless. The day was rather nondescript.

News
There was an item of interest in the local news: A semi, loaded with 17½ tons of explosives, crashed and exploded on Highway 6, in Utah County. This would be the same Highway 6 that I traveled when I was going to Moab this past Fall and Winter. The explosion left a crater roughly 30 feet deep and 70 feet in diameter and it also destroyed sections of nearby railroad track. Despite all of this damage and destruction, no one was killed. For more information, click here

The New Adventures of Bolty – Novice Superhero at Large
I have a new user icon:

I thought that I was going to have to sacrifice one of my existing icons in order to save this one. I was mistaken. I can live with that.

Don was online, so we took on one of his missions. We got our asses handed to us. Silver platters and all. We did beat the mission, but it whaled the tar out of us. A couple of times.

After that, I was looking forward to a (relatively) relaxing stroll through The Hollows. I wound up accepting an invitation to join a team – and go on a mission – just before I got to the entrance to The Hollows. The mission was to eliminate some “Clockworks” (Think: Wind-up mechanical robots) from an office building. Simple enough… but the game balances out your mission opponents based on the composition of the group. Highbeams (the other character) and I were both Blasters. Which is apparently another word for “target dummy.” We were smacked around eight ways from Sunday. So, High called for some more bodies. Unfortunately, she got more Blasters. Not good. There was more dying… on our side. *sigh* Another call for reinforcements went out. We got a couple of othere Archetypes, but no healers. A healer would have been nice. I think that I died three or four times before we cleared the mission.

The experience points were good; but I could have done without the XP debt – of which I have roughly 1100 points. *sigh*

Considering that I got two-ish hours of sleep last night, today wasn’t bad. Work was decent. The lunchtime workout was decent. And I even made a trip to Home Depot. Nothing to really complain about there.

Tonight’s Shadowrun game was in doubt for a while. A long while. I didn’t have a concept for how to bridge the story that the players completed last session with the rest of the story arc. I found it about thirty minutes before the game started. Talk about cutting it close… It’s also nice to run a game where the characters – and their players – are intelligent. brought up a question that I didn’t expect to hear until the next gaming session, at least. But, he did and it brought up a slew of other questions that will advance the plot nicely. I was very happy with the way the session turned out.

The Further Adventures of Bolty: Novice Superhero at Large
You’ve read my feelings concerning “Hover,” the most useless power in the world. It saved my life, once again. I was teamed up with ‘ character and we were leaving a mission and heading back to his contact. Along the way, we had to leap over a crevice. No problem.

Or so I thought…

I leapt… and fell. I have no idea how deep the crevice went, but when I noticed that I was falling, I hit Hover. I floated back to the road and then, it was on to meet the contact.

This was the second time that “the most useless power in the world” saved my life.

And, I stayed in the game until I hit Level 12.
TWO more levels until Flight!
That – and not dying – makes me happy.

Today was a good return-to-work day. When I decided to take last Friday off, I didn’t consider the fact that three four other people on my team were gone, as well. It was amusing to hear all of the “Welcome backs” in this morning’s meeting. The work day moved along nicely. It didn’t seem like I accomplished much; but I think that I streamlined a number of things so that I’ll be able to take care of them in a timely fashion.

After work, , and I met at one of the local Olive Garden restaurants for dinner. You can’t go wrong with good food and good company.

The Continuing Adventures of Bolty – Novice Superhero at Large
While I haven’t completely turned him away from the Dark Side (read: “Worlds of Warcraft”), decided to try City of Heroes tonight. And, as of last night: I am able to take on a sidekick. So, we tooled about the Atlas Park area looking for criminals to trounce. After a few head-smackings, I decided to exemplar with his character – I dropped my character down to his level, allowing for better distribution of experience points.

And, as usual, I took a few screenshots (1, 2, 3, 4), including one of a character that someone created called “Kid Planet” (picture). If I need to explain why this was amusing, nevermind. You wouldn’t get it.

Sunday : 07 August 05
Today marked Day 2 of the Park City Kimball Arts Festival. And I was there. Again. Along with , Leah, and .

We met at Cisero’s for brunch. Unfortunately, Cisero’s was not serving their brunch today. Instead, we ordered from their lunch menu. As usual, the food was very good. But, I still would have preferred their brunch. Although, we determined that serving brunch would not have been economically sound for them, especially with the festival going on: People would come in, pay a flat rate and eat like kings and queens. Instead, by making patrons eat from the regular menu, the potential per-customer profit could be higher.

After brunch, we strolled up and down Main Street. Two of the artisans recognized me from yesterday. (That’s kind of cool.) and I chatted with one, Audrey Heller, for ten or fifteen minutes. I have also decided that I am ordering two of her prints. I would have liked to have brought at least one of them home from the festival, but unfortunately I was not paid a visit by the Free Money Fairy. So, I’ll wait. I believe that I should be able to get them next week.

The rest of the festival was very cool. There were many things that I would have liked to have brought home. Damned skipping-out-of-town Free Money Fairy! But, I collected a number of the artists’ cards and will visit their websites and see if there is anything that catches my eye… And, once again: I ran into someone that I know while there. This year, it was Rebekah, one of my coworkers. This means that I’m three-for-three (three years running) for running into an acquaintance at the Arts Festival.

We came back to Salt Lake and spent the rest of the evening relaxing at home.

The Adventures of Bolty – Novice Superhero at Large   (Thanks to !)
I made a trip to Paragon City. Today’s gaming was fruitful… despite the fact that I died at least twice. I blew through Security Level 10 and am currently about 2/3 of the way to Level 12. And, of course, that means: two-and-a-half levels to Security Level 14. And Flight!

I soloed a few street gangs for a while, but then I got into a group and took on a few missions. And died a couple of times. But, it was worth it. And, more importantly: I had fun. And that’s what it’s all about.

A few nights ago, while part of a team, I followed a teammate to Icon – where every hero who’s any shops. She was going in for a new costume. My Security Level is not high enough to afford another costume, but I decided to make some modifications (1, 2) to my existing one. I traded in the tights for leather added a design on the top, and changed the boots. It’s not too different, but it’s enough to make me happy.

  • It’s a common fact that I am not a fan of modern Country music. I do, however, like some older Country & Western music, but the new stuff…? Pablum.

I (finally) got around to checking out a CD that came with an issue of Sports Illustrated from last year. On the CD was a song by country singer Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffet called: It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere. Imagine my surprise to find that I liked it. I had a difficult time reconciling that until I realized something: It sounds enough like a Jimmy Buffet song that it makes up for the fact that Mr. Jackson is a country singer.

Garth Brooks, on the other hand, has yet to make up for destroying Aerosmith’s Fever, by turning it into a song about a rodeo. *boggle*

  • Former ABC news anchor Peter Jennings has died of lung cancer. He was 67. I will always remember him for the broadcast of the Challenger explosion in 1986. I remember him sitting at the news desk saying:

“We want to show you footage of the Space Shuttle Challenger blowing up. Well, we don’t want to show you, but here it is…”

It’s rare that you see a news anchor rattled by the events that he is reporting, but it was very obvious that he was not completely poised and composed while recounting this item.

  • The Xbox Auteurs – Xbox as an indie movie studio
  • From reading JSA: Classified #1, I think that they may be setting up the continuity-screwed-over Power Girl (1, 2, 3) as the new Andromeda in the Legion.
  • I seen a peanut stand
    And heard a rubber band
I seen a needle that winked it’s eye
But I been done seen about everything
When I see a elephant fly

That’s it for now. Sleepiness has set in… and I don’t plan on falling asleep at the keyboard. Again.

Saturday : 06 August 05
After getting into bed around 6:00 this morning, I slept like a log until 10-ish. I woke up, answered the phone, sprawled back on the bed and konked out for another forty-five minutes or so. Then I got up and made my way to the HALO Command Center. Hmm, I might need to rename it to something like “The Hero Haven,” now that I’m playing City of Heroes so much… I spent the next half-hour or so being very lazy in front of the PC.

and I had talked about heading up to the 2005 Park City Kimball Arts Festival. We decided to make a “Go” of it and, after a bite to eat at Jitterbug Coffee Hop, we went. There was no parking to be found near the Festival, so we parked a couple of miles away, at Park City High School. And then we watched the shuttle bus drive off as we approached the stop. Fortunately, there was a cab waiting there and we took it to Main Street.

The festival was pretty cool. I remember many of the artists from previous PCKAF and the SLC Art Festival. There was some new blood, too. And there were a lot of cool things to see… and buy, if you had the money to do so. *sigh* We wandered up and down Main Street for a couple of hours before heading back to SLC.

and I had dinner with and his parents at Outback. I bucked the norm and did not get the Prime Minister’s Prime Rib, this time. Instead, I had the Victoria’s “Center Cut” Filet. It was quite good; smaller than the usual cut of prime rib that I get, but good nonetheless.

After dinner, it was back home and on to Paragon City. I ran around righting wrongs, fighting evil and trying not to die. (NOTE: I didn’t die.) I was working off some of the past few nights’ “experience debt” when one of my usual teammates showed up. We put beatdowns on a number of them before I had to log out for breakfast. And… I hit Security Level 10, to boot! (Only four more levels to Flight.)

Stray Toasters

  • I have been watching music videos at work. Four new ones that I have put into the rotation are Jim Croce “videos.” Three are taken from a special that he did in 1972 or 1973, before he died. One is a video for Time in a Bottle (a song that I’ve loved for years), which features footage of Jim and his then-young son – for whom the song was written. Bad Bad Leroy Brown and You Don’t Mess Around with Jim have been long-time favorites of mine, too. While they aren’t “happy” songs, they are fun.

In listening to these – and other – songs with a more sensitive ear for the story that the songs tell, I have gained a newfound appreciation for the late Mr. Croce’s work. As a storyteller, he crafted his words well. That’s also something that I noted on the “video” for Bad Bad Leroy Brown: He tells the story that led to him writing the song… and there’s something in the way that he tells it that just draws you in.

(14:41:55) : ooooh.

(14:42:04) : I like!
(14:42:06) : 😀
(14:42:59) : So, flying would be like graduation from “still wet behind the ears” to full-fledged superhero.

And with that…

Friday : 05 August 05
I took the day off from work. That’s not something that I do often, with the exceptions of emergencies, illness or vacations. I don’t think that I have just “taken” a day off like this since I worked for the USPS. And that’s been two-and-a-half years. And even then, I would typically just go in and leave early.

Today, however, I didn’t do much of anything. A good part of the morning was spent taking a nap. The afternoon saw about an hour of world-saving, as I played City of Heroes for a while.

Tonight’s Clitorati gathering was good. A modest-sized group showed up. Once again, there was a musician in the cafè when we got there. His name was Josh Heftel; he played guitar (and harmonica). It wasn’t bad… but he played a little loudly for the room. *shrug* But, again: It wasn’t bad, overall. Perry brought me a new piece of plastic crack: Firestorm (veteran). One of my favorite characters from the 80s. He also found an Edna (from The Incredibles) figure for . I also picked up a copy of this month’s Utne Reader and a new copy of Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word. I loaned my hardback copy to someone many moons ago, but I do not remember whom. Oh well.

I came home and played (more) City of Heroes.

Fell asleep at the keyboard.

Calling it good for now.

This afternoon, and I got together with and Alyce. We saw Sky High, from The Cradle to the Grave Empire Disney. It was cute. In a Disney kind of way. It tells the story of the son of the world’s greatest superheros… in his freshman year at high school. It wasn’t nearly as bad (read: “cheesy”) as we thought that it might be. It was fun.

After the movie, we all went to Cafe Med for dinner. And from there, back to Alyce and Dave’s to watch a movie called Primer. Interesting movie. And one that will require multiple viewings to catch some of the implied and overt story lines.
