Good day, all around.
Except for getting beaten in both games of Magic at work. And even that wasn’t so bad.

Tonight was D&D night at ‘ place. In the words of Dr. Peter Venkman: “We came. We saw. We kicked its ass.” Which is true. For the most part. The exceptions would be when most of the party wound up needing some form of healing. (Which was more than “once.”) And when the main bad guy – who was actually not a guy – decided to summon something to whip our asses… and botched in the middle of the summoning. She wound up opening the door for something MUCH more powerful to come through. Not being completely braindead, we did what any intelligent party would do: We left with the quickness. With the utmost quickness, at that. (Well, John wanted to stay and fight; we were ready to leave him there to die on his own – we were that severely outclassed.) But, no one in the party died. This time.

The High-Flying Adventures of Indigo Bolt
I decided to go on patrol this evening. Mystical Temptress invited me to join her on a couple of missions against Devouring Earth. I joined her and the hunt was on. But, not before I headed to Founders’ Falls and got my dance on.

We went on a couple of missions. The first one was fine. The second one involved deaths. And I don’t mean the D.E.s, either. We died. A few times. By the time we decided to call it a night, I had racked up 15k in XP debt. Wahoo.

Happy Mother’s Day to those of you to whom it applies. I hope that the day found you in good health, good spirits and – when and where able – in the good company of your family and/or other loved ones.

Slept in this morning… which meant that I missed calling Mom and Kitty and wishing them a Happy Mother’s Day. Verdammt. But, I left her enough messages (in enough places) to let her know that I tried calling her… more than once… over a period of many hours. I did get to speak with my father (fully recovered from last weekend’s events) and Kris, Third of Four in the sibko. They were both doing well.

This afternoon, I took to Park City for Mother’s Day brunch. We went to Cisero’s. Natch. We didn’t stay in Park City for the usual gallery and shop stroll… but we did stop in Java Cow for tasty iced creams.

Back to SLC. We headed back to my place. I’m not sure if there was some celestial convergence of which I wasn’t aware, but the next-to-impossible finally happened…

The Spellbinding Crusades of Eva Angel

That’s right, actually created a character and played City of Crack City of Heroes. And she liked it. She really liked it. She created a Magic Controller. Then she ran around Atlas Park kicking ass and taking names. (Something about her being all out of bubble gum…) Not only did she beat down a lot of Hellions, she took some time to rock out in the local train station
Mm-hmm. That’s right. Looks like ‘s Valarinne has a new dancin’ partner. (I’m waiting to see when Eva’s going to want to go to Pocket D, the in-game dance club.) Next mission: Picking up a new video card for her computer, so she can pick up a copy and play it at home.

And that’s all the news from Lake Saline (and Paragon City).

Namaste.

Saturday : 13 May 2006
Today’s been a good day. It started off quietly – well… except for the washing machine – and has been pretty mellow. I had lunch at Jitterbug Coffee Hop; and I chatted with Bruce and a couple of the regulars. From there, it was off to REI to check out their Anniversary Sale. (I managed to walk out empty-handed.) Next stop was a used book store off of 33rd South, just north of 13th East. I didn’t even know existed, but there was a small, sign pointing it out on the street… and I was helpless to resist. It was a small shop;owner was rather nice. I will most likely revisit it.

We caught Mission: Impossible III. It was a great leap forward from Mission: Impossible 2. I’ll probably do a more in-depth review tomorrow or next week. I will say that if you are looking for fun summer fare with lots of things going *BOOM*, this should definitely fit the bill.

We met , Chris, his brother Ryan, and others for dinner at Tres Hombres, celebrating ‘s birthday. On the whole, it was a good time. Our waitress, however, left quite a bit to be desired: She neglected taking ‘ food order and repeatedly forgot to refill his drink. When she came around to ask if anyone else at the table wanted or needed anything, most people said “Yes, drinks…” Yet, she neglected to bring them. On two occasions. It dawned on me, about halfway through dinner that I had received equally poor service at this restaurant once before. And it was from the same waitress. I, and others at the table, reflected our displeasure through our gratuities. Fortunately, the dinner company made up for the lack of attention and service.

Breakfast saw a small turnout: Only four people. Five, if you count Bill, who showed up as we were preparing to leave. Melody (the manager at Cheers, not to be confused with ) had some happy news.

And that’s all the news from Lake Wobegon Saline. For now, at least.

Namaste.

It’s the end of the week. A shortened week, sure… but that’s not the point.

Today was a rather uneventful day at work. At lunch, Tommy and I introduced Brice to Crack: the Addiction Magic. While he’s played other CCGs, it was his first time playing M:tG. He did well. He came in second in the first game we played and he won the second game. A good portion of the rest of the workday was spent talking with Jason about a server problem.

Post-work, Cliterati. (We should really cement the spelling on that, whether it should be “Clitorati,” given the discussion that led to using this name, or “Cliterati,” as we most often gather in a bookstore.) Small gathering tonight: , , , , and Vikki (‘s sister). Tonight, I regained my Crossword Challenge crown from . Over dinner, we discussed who would be in positions of power if ran the world. We unanimously agreed that her best appointment was as her War Minister, a position that not only made him effectively the Secretary of Defense, but also the general Arbiter of Law (incl. jurisdiction over police functions).

  • I tried calling my uncle today… but he wasn’t in. Neither was my mother. *shrug*
  • I found this recipe for a Green Tea Martini in Southwest Airlines Magazine

Strain into chilled martini glasses (rimmed with sugar, if desired)

    Makes four (4) martinis.

  • Cowgirl Chocolates
  • The artwork of Adam Benton: Kromekat
  • I picked up two weeks’ worth of four-color distraction today. I also picked up the books from last week’s Free Comic Book Day. In addition to the books, I also picked up a free piece of promotional plastic crack: Wolverine…which I had previously thought that I had missed out on.
  • Speaking of plastic crack: *covet*
  • : Whatever problem you were having with the site earlier seem to have worked itself out.
  • For Nyx, with love –

Another No Bad News Thursday comes to an end.

<< Rewind <<
Yesterday at work was a good, relatively uneventful day. During lunch, Tommy and I played Magic: the Gathering. We drew the interest of some of our coworkers who were unfamiliar with the game. We also got the attention of some of them who do or did play the game. You could see the look of “Should I bring my cards to work…?” in some of their eyes.

Tommy trounced me in the first game: 30 – 0. Ouch. It wasn’t pretty.

In the second game, my hand was light on mana and had to play a defensive game. I managed to get things on the board while countering and unsummoning his first few spells. *whew* Tommy had a couple of creatures against which I couldn’t defend myself, due to their special abilities. Again, it wasn’t pretty. But, I had something that he couldn’t defend against: Flying creatures. Three of which were hard-hitting Mahamoti Djinn. 5/6 creatures. He had me down, 16 – 8 at the beginning of the next-to-last turn. Due to a card that he was using, he inflicted a point of damage on himself at the start of his turn, taking him to 15. He attacked me. I gladly opted not to block those creatures that I could and wound up dropping down to 4 points of life. Great… When he told me that his turn was over, I smiled and said “Game.” He looked at me for a moment. And then it dawned on him: I had three Djinn… flying… each doing 5 points of damage. Game Over. Vindication is a wonderful thing.

After work, I hung out with and introduced her to Undercover Brother. She thought that it was funny.

> Play >
Today was good. Work was uneventful, but productive. The lunchtime workout…? Well, let’s just say that it showed that I haven’t been in the gym in two weeks. Today definitely put the “work” in “workout.” But it was good to get back into the swing of things.

The Nefarious Deeds of Dhoruba
Tonight, I met ‘ character, Giroux, in The Rogue Isles. We headed to Sharkhead Isle and took on Gold Brickers, Luddites and Gremlins (oh my!) Not to mention some disenfranchised miners and dock workers. I died a few times, but the XP debt wasn’t bad and I was in the clear by the time we stopped playing. I didn’t hit Threat Level 12, but I’m oh so close.

The High-Flying Adventures of Indigo Bolt
I headed to Paragon City, to play on the other side of the fence, so to speak. I soloed a couple of missions and was invited to join a team. I had to be careful on the solo missions, but with Sparky’s help, I survived them. The team mission was “save the hostages.” Those aren’t nearly as bad as the “escort the hostages to safety” missions. There were seven of us on the team; the mission went fairly quickly.

And by the end of the team mission, I hit Security Level 34. Booyah. It’s not a power level; it’s an enhancement level. But, it was still an increase. *nod* Next stop, Level 35. And it’s only 560,000 points away. Before leaving Paragon City, I made a stop at the Icon shop in Steel Canyon. It was time for a minor change in my look. (Again.) I got rid of the shades in my primary costume. Instead, I went with glowing eyes… like I have with my third costume.

Not tonight. Check back later.

Tuesday : 09 May 2006
Not a bad day, for a “Monday.” Work was good, post-work was good.

The High-Flying Adventures of Indigo Bolt
I was going to get together with Don and go on patrol in Paragon… but he wasn’t able to make it. So, I joined another group of heroes for a mission in Croatoa. That was something of a mistake: I died three times. (Over 20,000 points of debt!) In fact, I think that just about everyone in the group died at one point or another. We left that mission and took on a rescue/escort mission. Twice. After that, I left that group and joined another for a mission in what looked like Faultline or Boomtown, but I’m not sure. When that team disbanded, I and another member of that team took on some members of The Council, under the streets of Talos Island.

I’m now 2100 points from being free of XP debt.
And about 50,000 points from Level 34.
These are good things.

Whirlwind weekend…

Monday : 08 May 2006
…annnnd I’m back. It’s been a very busy weekend. That’s not to say that it wasn’t a “good” weekend, just that there was a lot to do and not a lot of time for much else. It was great to see the family, but I am tired. That said, here’s the recap of the weekend:

Friday: Up, ready and off to the airport. Check-in and security were fast and easy. I was hungry, but decided to wait until we got through security and hit the Cinnabon shop at the far end of the B Gates. Great theory, but practical application bit me in the ass: There is no longer a Cinnabon there. This is not something that you want to discover when you haven’t had anything to eat. Fortunately, I had the foresight to pick up some apples and cashews for the trip – they served as a suitable substitute breakfast. As I hadn’t slept much Thursday night/Friday morning, I slept for most of the trip to Las Vegas.

Not surprisingly, I slept most of the way from Vegas to Oklahoma City, too. When we disembarked and got into the terminal, I walked right past Adam and Chelsea (my brother and his fianceè); I was looking for my father or stepmother (who should have arrived about thirty minutes ahead of us), but they were delayed getting out of Atlanta. Baggage claim. Rental agency. On to Adam and Chelsea’s new house.

We headed out of OKC to see the kids’ house… and meet their dog, Scout. It was a nice home in a good area – three bedrooms, two baths, nice kitchen, dining and living rooms, garage, mud room and a decent-sized yard. From there, we headed back into OKC to pick up our penguin suits tuxedos. Adam had been eyeing the coat that I wore out there, but Men’s Warehouse was out of them… so I bought him a different jacket (of his choosing) for his graduation present. He seemed pretty happy about this. And I didn’t have to worry about the safety of my coat for the duration of the weekend. After I tried on my tux, I headed into the mall to find Starbucks – I hadn’t had any coffee and really didn’t think that it would be healthy for those around me if I was without caffeine for much longer. Post coffee and tuxes, we headed to Stillwater, where Oklahoma State University is, where Adam’s apartment was…. and we were staying Friday and Saturday.

The ride to Stillwater reminded me of driving through Kansas when I moved to Utah. I asked my father “How did Adam find such an out-of-the-way school?” Just after I said it, I remembered that I had gone to school in the middle-of-nowhere Indiana. I shared the afterthought with my father; we both got a good laugh out of it. To the hotel to drop off the family (Dad, Kitty, Rana, Carole – Kitty’s sister – and Grandmother Anderson). Adam, and I hung out with them for a bit before heading to Adam’s apartment. The three of us decided that we were hungry, so we made a trip to the local Chili’s, where I introduced Adam to the stout goodness known as “Guinness.” He liked it. Back to the apartment. Sleep. Sweet, sweet sleep.

Saturday: Adam got up to take Kitty, Rana and to hear The Shrub (yes, that Shrub) give the commencement address. I had considered going – I even had Adam reserve a ticket for me – but since Adam told me on Friday night that it was optional and not part of his actual commencement ceremony (speech at 10:00AM, commencement at 4:00 PM) – I skipped it. I enjoyed the extra couple hours of sleep. I got up and started getting ready while he went back to pick up the rest of the family. They came back and we ate, chatted and wasted some time until we had to go to the campus. It was a zoo. There was an early commencement (1:00 PM) and a late one (Adam’s, at 4:00); the early one was clearing out as we arrived. We found a place for the family to sit without too much ado; I found a seat closer to the stage, so that I could get decent pictures of Adam. I wound up sitting next to a man who had been there all day: His grandson was graduating at 4:00, but his grandson’s girlfriend had been in the 1:00 group. *Ouch* The commencement itself was very nice. A group that played bagpipes and drums – kilts and all – marched in behind the graduates. Hadn’t seen that one before. Then there was the state song: Oklahoma! The Rodgers and Hammerstein Oklahoma! The professor who led it had a great voice, I’ll give him that. Booming. Commanding. And, it sounded as though he was having fun singing it… as did everyone else (who knew the lyrics) in the arena. There were LOTS of happy, singing people in that place. And a lot of clapping, too. I forgot to mention: I got to play Forward Observer/Relay Operator between the family and Adam. Thanks to the wonders of cell phone technology – and the fact that I knew where they all were – I got to point them out to each other. That wasn’t an easy feat in a noisy athletic arena, but we managed to get it done.

Then, there was the conferring of the diplomas. They called one school… then another… About halfway through the School of Technology, Architecture and Engineering, I happened (sheer luck) to look up at the family-unit. They were all waving at the floor of the arena. Rather than go with my first instinct (“They’ve all gone right ’round the bend…”) I looked at the floor. Adam wasn’t in his seat. *boggle* It turned out that he got up and got in line – excuse me: He skipped two schools and about 700 people – to get his diploma. He had a good reason, though: He didn’t want to be late or have to rush to his commissioning ceremony. I could understand that. When he got his diploma, he headed for the door. So did we. We went a couple of buildings over to the Student Union, where he would be commissioned into the USAF as a 2nd Lieutenant. That ceremony was nice. There were 14 cadets in his group. Before the cadets were officially commissioned as officers, there was a “How we got here” PowerPoint presentation – each cadet had selected a theme song and series of pictures to show. Adam chose The Steve Miller Band’s The Joker for his song. After the presentation, it was time for the official commissioning, which was done in three parts:

  1. The cadet was read the oath of office.
  2. The cadet was given his “Hard Rank,” wherein someone would pin his gold bars to his uniform and hat.
  3. The cadet was given his First Salute by a sergeant or, in a couple cases, family members who were or had been in the military.

One of Adam’s favorite officers read him the oath; Kitty and Chelsea pinned him. There was a reception for the new lieutenants in the ballroom; we didn’t stay long because we were heading back to the hotel to meet and to have dinner and dessert together. Before eating, however, Adam and I made a run to the local liquor store for some pre-wedding libations. Back to the hotel to eat and gab with family. Back to Adam’s, where I introduced him to Pirate’s Tea, which he liked. (Thanks again to .) We then stayed up talking until 2:00 AM, when I just couldn’t stay awake any longer.

Sunday: I was awakened by Adam and his Winnie the Pooh hand puppet. I got a good laugh out of that. We got up, ready and headed to pick up the rest of the family-unit from the hotel. From there, it was on to Norman, OK. We checked everyone into a hotel there and then headed to Thunderbird Chapel, where the wedding and reception were being held. We, as groomsmen, did our fair share of pre-wedding imbibing. Not “too much,” mind you. Just enough to dull the rough edges. Yeah… that’s it! “Dull the rough edges.” *nod* Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Wedding! Chelsea’s uncle officiated the wedding. It was a very nice ceremony – they both wrote their own vows. (I had forgotten how well Adam writes… when he wants to or has to.) Pictures. Pictures. Pictures. Reception! Food and light (non-alcoholic) beverages. As Adam’s Best Man, I gave his toast. His only request/requirement was that I not embarrass him. I did my best not to do that.

I said that I had been very happy when, twenty years prior, I was told that I was (finally) going to have a little brother. I also admitted that while I hadn’t thought about the “someone to get you in trouble” aspect of having a younger brother, that I had been – and continue to be – very proud to have him for my brother. And that he and Chelsea truly seemed to love and respect each other. And, if they could weather each others’ idiosyncrasies, that they would have a long and happy life together.

After Whitney, Chelsea’s cousin and Maid of Honor gave her toast, we sat down to eat and then… there was dancing. First, Chelsea and her father. Then, Adam and Kitty. Then, EVERYBODY. Part of the “everybody” dancing was a Twist “competition.” Dad and Kitty won. Hands down. I thought that they danced at Rana and ‘ wedding. Nuh-uh. Not even close. They. Got. DOWN. After it was said and done, the DJ said that he had been kidding about the whole “competition” thing, but after their display, he had to award them a blue ribbon. (It really was a sight to behold. And, yes, I got many a picture of them cutting a rug, to prove it.)

A couple of hours later, we found ourselves back at the hotel. Shortly after that, we all decided that we were still a little hungry. So, we headed to Applebee’s for a late bite to eat. And drinks! We talked, told stories and drank our respective tasty beverages. Dinner was fun. Laugh-until-you-cry fun. It was a very good way to unwind after the weekend’s festivities. Back to the hotel, where I played on the Interweb (hey, , I used iBahn! Go figure!), took a long, relaxing soak/bath… and then piled into bed for a good night’s rest. Or so I thought. I had a difficult time falling asleep.

Monday: was up and gone before most of us could form a coherent thought; it was good to see him, though brief. Coolest brother-in-law ever. *nod* After getting up and getting ready, it was time for the getting out. and I said our goodbyes to Rana, Kitty, Carole and Grandmother Anderson and Dad drove us into OKC to catch our flight. Adam and Chelsea met us at the airport and hung out with us until it was time for us to head to our gate. Before we left, I told the two of them that they should come visit the Land Behind the Zion Curtain before Adam has to report to his first duty station. We are tentatively shooting for Fourth of July “weekend.”

A short while after arriving at home, I received “Picture Mail” from Adam, who turned 21 today: It was a picture of him, with a large mug of beer in one hand and a Hooters girl at his side. He had a very large smile on his face. He deserves to smile and be happy and all that goes along with it.

And that’s how I spent my summer vacation long weekend in Oklahoma.

Now, it’s time for bed.

Namaste.

Thursday : 04 May 2005
Today was pretty uneventful. That’s not a bad way to spend the last day of the workweek and the last day in the office ’til Tuesday. (Hush, hush. Keep it down now. Voices Carry.) Tomorrow morning, I’m heading to Oklahoma for my brother’s graduation, Air Force commissioning AND (as if that wasn’t enough) his wedding.

I hung out with and her boys for a bit before I got to the business of laundry folding and packing for the weekend. After they left (and the laundry was folded or hung and the bag packed), I chatted with Don for a bit and then…

The High-Flying Adventures of Indigo Bolt
…I headed to Paragon City to see what wrongs needed correcting. There wasn’t too much going on. I took on a few Crey policemen and special agents, along with some Freakshow members. It felt good. There wasn’t too much happening in town, so I headed up to Salamanca/Croatoa and beat on some Fir Bolg and a few of witches of The Cabal. That felt good, too.

After that, I headed back to Talos Island and to Pocket D, the interdimensional Heroes and Villains club. I danced and chatted with a few people until it was time to head home. On the way, I ran into a couple of friends, so I spent a little more time running and flying around the city. There was a nice moonrise; I went for a flight and swim in the bay. Before too long, the sun was coming up and it was time to head home.

Wednesday : 03 May 2006
Today was a good day… even with the bit of oddness that happened earlier. Other than that, there’s not a whole lot to report.

Four-Color Coverage
I read a coworker’s copy of Infinite Crisis #7, the conclusion to DC Comic’s continuity-shaking mini-series.

I’m not sure what to make of it. Given some of the things that we’ve seen – or have been alluded to in the “One Year Later” books, we know that [spoiler deleted] and that [spoiler deleted]. I was surprised to see that [spoiler deleted] when Wonder Woman and Batman [spoiler deleted]. The scenes with Superman, Superman and Power Girl were good. No, I didn’t stutter. I was referring to Kal-El (the Superman we’re used to) and Kal-L (from “The Planets Formerly Known as Earth-2 and Krypton-2”). We knew that Alexander Luthor was a megalomaniac. We knew that Superboy Prime (from Earth-Prime – a planet where he was the sole hero…. LONG story, don’t ask) was nuts.

The rest of the story was a good, old-fashioned beatdown: Lots of people in costumes snapping their four-color feet off in other peoples’ four-colored asses. Mm-hmm, that’s right! Heroes. Villains. It didn’t matter. There were plenty of cans of Whoop-Ass for everyone.

But… I did feel that parts of the story were anticlimactic. Lots of guff and bluster, but a little weak on the delivery. (Read carefully and see if you agree with me about [spoiler deleted], near page [spoiler deleted].) You can check out Crisis Counseling: The Finale (including spoilers) for information about the issue.

From Infinite Crisis we move on to 52, which will fill in the gaps of what happened between I.C. #7 and the “One Year Later” titles. DC is undertaking a big job in putting out weekly books to tell these stories. Weekly. As in “fifty-two issues.” And I’m sure that people will buy them so that they can know all of the little details. (I’ll wait for the trade paperbacks, thank you very much.)

It will be interesting to see how the “new” DCU handles the changes and repercussions of the events of Infinite Crisis. Hopefully, it will be long-lasting and will effect some real changes in the characters. Even more than that, I hope that we don’t find Bobby Ewing in the shower only to discover that all of the events of the past few months were just a dream…

I hadn’t seen the X-Men: TLS trailer, but it looks damn good – hopefully Mr. Ratner will prove a worthy successor to Mr. Singer; The M:I:III trailer was pretty much what I expected: *ehn*, but I’ll probably see it, anyway.

As I mentioned, it’s mostly sunny outside.
Mostly sunny != dark 1 (that’s pretty easy to get your head around)

The young genius in question walked out of the building, cell phone at his ear and stopped in front of one of our windows… and proceeded to squeeze the bejeezus2 out of the side of his nose. As close to the window as he was (elbows on the glass, face about 6″ from the glass), he should have darkened an area of the window to a sufficient degree to have seen in. More importantly, he should have seen Tommy and me staring at him – at first, in disbelief… then laughing. But, he kept on squeezing. He obviously wasn’t going to stop until the job was done. (Gotta love a good work ethic.) And when he was done, he walked into the parking lot.

He came back past the building a couple of minutes ago… and just stared at the window (roughly, at the spot where I was sitting).

He turned his head and walked into the building.
And I laughed.
Again.

1 – In PHP, the symbol != means “is not equal to”
2 – It wasn’t really “bejeezus,” the actual term (or one of them, at least) is “sebum.”

Tuesday : 02 May 2006
Today was a good day. I decided that I didn’t want to work at my desk, so I sat in one of the conference rooms. The one with the windows. It was a very pleasant change of pace. And, after some slow-going over the past week or so, I made some serious headway on the PHP project, too. I may do it again tomorrow.

This evening was the Shadowrun game. was only partially correct: The team went in to a potential shitstorm… but they survived. In fact, they made it through the first part of the session (relatively) problem-free. When they went back to their contact, however, is when things got… “interesting.” There was a matter of honor to be resolved. Tommy handled it well. Very well. And they did the whole thing without any bloodshed. Now, if I could just figure out a way to get to show up for the game in two weeks…
