</on-the-way-to-work groove>

This played on the radio during the morning commute. Not only was it a little touch of early morning Old School, but I couldn’t help but be amused by the fact that it seemed so apropos for a “Monday morning, on the way to work” song.

Sunday : 06 November 05
It’s been a pretty good day… even despite the Ravens loss to the Bengals (congrats, ). The early part of the day was lazy. Around 2:00, I headed out for a cup of frozen mocha goodness and to wander around Circuit City. I wound up spending most of my time at Lowe’s. Granted, I had a reason for going – I need to replace the swamp cooler cover – but that didn’t stop me from looking at just about everything else in the store. Go figure. And I wound up not getting a cover. I couldn’t remember what size cover to get. So, there is yet another trip to Lowe’s in the near future.

Back home and then out for a late lunch/dinner at Marie Callendar’s. And since then, it’s been a quiet night in.

The Dark Trespasses of Dhoruba
I installed City of Villains last night and took it for a test drive this evening. Something that NCSoft has done is to have it install in the same directory as City of Heroes. As the programs share some functions, this makes a lot of sense and saves a good bit of drive space. The character generation section is at least as good as – if not a touch better than – its CoH counterpart. The fundamentals are the same, but there are some more… monstrous… templates available for use on your character. If you’re going to be evil, you might just want to look the part. No ifs, ands or buts. I opted to go for a fairly normal-looking character:

In creating Dhoruba (“THOR-roo-BAH”), a Swahili name meaning “storm,” I had to come up with an origin/reason for him turning to a life of crime. In doing so, I also came up for a new reason for Indigo Bolt to be a hero: Dhoruba is Bolt’s younger brother. Dhoruba felt slighted by their parents’ attention to his older brother; he always felt “not quite good enough,” in comparison. So, rather than strive to earn his parents’ favor, he decided to use his abilities to prey upon the weak. As he grew older, he found that earning a reputation for himself wasn’t enough – he decided that his powers also gave him a way to “strike back” at his brother. So, as Dhoruba seeks to gain power and influence and to besmirch his brother’s reputation, Indigo Bolt feels an obligation to “save” his brother… whether or not he wants to be saved.

I spent a few hours breaking Dhoruba out of jail, The Zigguraut, in CoH‘s Brickstown. From there, it was on to Mercy Island, to join the ranks of the Arachnos and to start creating a reputation. By the time that I was finished (for the night), Dhoruba was Threat Level 5.

And I had fun doing it. Subjugating the world is almost as much fun as saving it.

  • I took the X-Men quiz that’s been going around. I got the result that I pretty much expected… and says that it fits pretty much for me.
You scored as Cyclops. Cyclops is the team leader of the X-Men, and a skilled one at that. He loves Jean Grey very much. He’s a strict and sometimes uptight leader, but he believes in his cause and he knows what he’s fighting for… Peace between Mutants and Humans. Powers: Optic blasts

Heard on tonight’s episode of Baby Blues:

Rodney: Did you hear about the sexy pirate movie?
Carl: No.
Rodney: It’s rated Arrrrrr!

And that is it. For tonight, at least.

That’s another five in the “Out” bin – I believe that makes it a week.

It was a decent enough day. It started off slowly and with me in a bit of a *blah* mood, but it turned around near lunchtime.

After work, I got to hang out with for a while. It had been far too long since we’d had any one-on-one family bonding. It was nice. Have to do it again in the near future. Then it was Clitorati-time. Decent turn-out. And, I got to speak geek about comics and City of Heroes with . Imagine that… me… talking about comics and a game that I like. What are the odds?!

Wednesday : 02 November 05
I woke up tired this morning.

Falling asleep in the bathtub last night probably had something to do with it. I decided to take a hot soak and do a little reading. That part went pretty well. After I finished reading, I decided to enjoy the warmth of the tub a little longer… or as long as possible, given that the back of the tub is not sloped and is thus not exactly conducive to relaxing comfortably. The next thing I know, the water is cold. I turned on some warmer water for a shower as the cold remains of the bath water drained out. After that, I fell into bed.

As, I said above: I woke up tired this morning.

The rest of the day was good. Work wasn’t too bad. I had a couple of… “interesting” discussions with my coworkers at lunch. One of them was the result of what I consider a lapse in someone’s judgment – that person made a statement that was ill-suited for the argument that he was trying to make. What was said and what were meant were, in my and others’ opinions, radically different. It took a lot of restraint not to go off when he made his original gaffe. Fortunately, the rest of the workday was uneventful and rather productive. I also discovered that a networking issue that I had been dealing with wasn’t a problem due to anything that I did – it was the result of someone mislabeling a group of ports. Vindication is a wonderful thing.

I came home this evening and took an impromptu nap. I cooked dinner (chicken stir-fry) and compared notes with over how our respective days went. A little later, I headed over to ‘s; we watched Mean Girls. I don’t think that I’ve seen this since it was in theatrical release – it still amuses me.

And now, it’s just about time to call it a night. But this time, without a nap-inducing soak.

Namaste.

Tuesday : 01 November 05
I had a lot of low- to mid-level static buzzing through my head today. It was distracting and made it occasionally difficult to focus on work. So, I took a mid-morning sabbatical to try and clear it out. It helped. Going to the gym at lunch also helped. The rest of the day proceeded fairly well.

Tonight’s Law & Order: SVU was rather… intense. It opened with a child getting shot on a school playground. As the show progressed, viewers discover that the episode is about hate crimes. An oft-used device of the L&O franchise is that some sort of plot twist is introduced during the second half of the show. This episode was no exception. Had there been only one twist, that would have been fine. There were at least four, if I’m counting correctly, in this one. And they were not arbitrary things, either. To their credit, NBC didn’t pull many punches with this episode.

Another week begins…

On the whole, it’s been a good day. This evening, I watched the Ravens-Steelers game and handed out assorted goodies to trick-or-treaters. We had a fair number of “kids” show up this year… some where “a little” older than others. I decided to wear my costume while serving up candy – I got a lot of wide-eyed looks and “That’s a cool costume” comments. And, while I was in a Hallowe’en mood, I uploaded my pictures from Saturday’s party.

Football

Baltimore at Pittsburgh
19 – 20
The Ravens looked like an honest-to-goodness NFL football team this week. Anthony Wright did a good job of moving the offense downfield. The defense, minus Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, did an admirable job against the Steelers.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough. The game literally came down to the last two minutes. Baltimore had a chance to move into field goal range and win the game, but things just didn’t fall into place that way.
