Last night was fun. We had trick-or-treaters! I know that for most of you, this might not be a big thing, but as far as we can remember: This is the first time that Jess and I have had costumed crusaders come to the door (while we were home) in the four years we’ve been together. And, it wasn’t just little kids; we had a few teens who joined in the fun. We went to two parties: One at and ‘s and one at Kate and Perry’s. Pictures. Jess whipped up my costume for me – in three days. I think she did a helluva job. Hopefully, next time I need a costume, she won’t have to come to the rescue at the eleventh hour because of other peoples’ failure to deliver as promised. (BTW: If anyone has a picture of Larry, please let me know. Somehow I managed to miss getting one.)

It was snowing on the way home, last night. Nothing major. It’s Utah. And we’re in the first of Utah’s eight months of winter. You learn to accept it cope. I woke up this morning to about 2″ of snow. We had a brief power outage last night, too. I reset the clock before going to bed… but neglected to adjust for the end of Daylight Savings Time. I looked at the clock and thought, “Oh, I slept later than I’d planned.” Then I looked at the time on my phone. Then it all clicked.

Otherwise, today has been a fairly lazy day. I talked with Bret for a while during the Steelers-Patriots game. We watched most of the second quarter “together.” Unlimited calls on the weekends are good. That Roethlisburger kid has the stuff. I think that he was just about the only thing missing from the Steelers’ game package. I caught up with the other Steelers fan on my speed dial – my uncle – too. All seems to be well in New York.

The Ravens played a good defensive game… but it wasn’t quite enough. The combined losses of RB Jamal Lewis and TE Todd Heap definitely show. Other members of the offense have stepped up admirably, but the overall performance just isn’t the same. On the plus side, Jamal will be back next week and Todd will be back a week or two after that.

Terrell Owens, the almost-Raven, looked good… even though it was on the other side of the ball. He scored a late 4th Quarter TD and did a victory dance that mocked Ray Lewis’ pre-game dance. I think that served to fuel the Ravens’ fire to attempt a comeback.

Also, congratulations to the Eagles on a 7-0 start for the first time in their franchise history.

Stray Toasters

  • I just had a completely random thought. Even by my standards. I mean anyone who has a regular section of their journal posts dedicated to the random things that just “pop up” in their head already has some random things… but I think that this one takes the cake: I’m watching the Bears-Niners game on ESPN. The Bears’ place kicker just put up a field goal. Some kickers will point to the sky after a successful kick, as if to say, “Thank you, Lord.” The Baptist in me has no problem with this.

    The random thought that immediately flashed through my head was: “What if an NFL team had a Satanist on the squad and after every good kick he pointed to the ground?”

    This was followed by nominally more sane thoughts of: “What if practitioners of other faiths made similar displays after a touchdown, field goal, home run, goal-shattering dunk?” How would the American masses deal with a Hindu or Buddhist having a religious moment? Especially if it was something that was far-removed from their Judeo-Christian mores. Like a (“Whirling”) Dervish or a Shivite getting their dance on. (Granted, the celebration might last longer that a game’s quarter…) Or a Buddhist folding him- or herself into the Lotus position.

    Things that make you go “Om….” I mean “Hmm.” Or something.

  • There was a funny Fantastic Four homage – or parody – on tonight’s episode of The Simpsons
  • I never realized that there was a falling paper problem.
  • Nigel Uno (‘Number 1’ from Codename: Kids Next Door) as a Borg for Hallowe’en. *laughs*
  • “I estimate that building an entire starship, top to bottom will take me about two months. Give or take a day.”
    “Nifty. Is there anything that I can do to help?”
    “Yes, but the estimate goes up to seven months.”

  • The post-Rick Fox Vanessa Williams is still just as good-looking as the pre-Rick Fox (and with-Rick Fox) one.
  • I’m playing family travel agent again. *twitch*
  • I was a latecomer to the Harry Potter phenomenon. I don’t think that I started listening to the first book until shortly after I saw the first movie. But, I like the series. Tonight, HBO aired Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets… Revealed. It was a neat behind-the-scenes look at the second movie.
  • “President Declares Death Unamerican”
    (The entire Death series of comics is pretty funny.)

  • The writer or storyboard artist for the latest commercial for ATV Off-Road Fury 3(for the PlayStation2) must have been a fan of Monsters, Inc.
  • The 100 Scariest Movie Moments is on Bravo. Stephen King’s Cujo is #58. But that’s not the point. Well, it is. Kind of. Dan Pintauro was talking about being the kid in the movie. I wasn’t 100% sure about this, so I checked this out and confirmed: He was the same Danny Pintauro who was in Who’s the Boss? (And check out the trivia on that page, just below the cast listing. O_o ?!?)
