Tuesday – 26 August 2008
One down, four to go.

After work last night, I headed up to SaraRules’ parents’ for dinner (and mojitos!) and general hanging out… which included football: The Chargers vs. the Seahawks. Yes, it was (only) pre-season action, but it’s still rock and roll NFL to me. We tuned in a little late and watched the first half of the game.

At halftime, SaraRules and I headed back to my place for movie date night. We watched The Kingdom. Neither of us had seen it before, so we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. I wouldn’t recommened this movie as a “happy, fun-time” fare, but it was a good film. I give it a couple of solid thumbs-up with a nod and a smile.

After that, it was time for The Middleman. The episode was… entertaining, but lacked a little of its usual punch. Not the episode I would have picked for the first one that we got to watch together, but what’re ya gonna do?

SaraRules headed home and I sat on the couch, trying to decide if I wanted to play CoH… or log into PokerStars… or something. I watched DS9 while I pondered my conundrum. That turned into DS9 watching me. At that point, I decided that it was time to call it a night. And I did.

Today, I’m going to be elbow-up in enterprise KVM research.
Tonight, I’m going to be elbow-up in a ‘Clix tourney… one for which I’m still not completely sure which figures I’m using.

• I got home last night to find a package waiting for me… from . Inside, I found a couple of comic-related magnets (Supergirl and Hawkgirl) and a Test for Echo tour baseball cap. Unexpected win-win!

I asked if she had read Batman: The Killing Joke; he said that he wasn’t sure, but would mention it to her. I’m hoping that this doesn’t become a “career-limiting move.”

I was up far too late last night.
FAR too late.

Coworker Eric came to SLC last night to pick up my old desk: I wanted something different, he wanted a desk. Win-Win. I discovered that it is much easier to make a mess when clearing out furniture than it is to return the same space to a nominal sense of order and coherence. Hence the reason that I was up late last night/this morning. Let’s just say that caffeine and I are on a first-name basis this morning.

I watched some of the Olympic Summer Games last night. I watched Men’s and Women’s 400M hurdles. For those who didn’t see the USA Men’s team take gold, silver AND bronze, it was a pretty amazing race.

The women’s races were equally stunning – especially the event in which Jamaica’s Melaine Walker ran. I also watched some of the gymnastics events… and, after seeing He Kexin, I can now understand why some people question whether or not some of the Chinese gymnasts are of official competing age.

Happy Birthday to :

Last night, I stopped by Far West Comics (again) to talk with Matt and Nano about some suggestions I had made to changing their weekly update email and to bounce around a few ideas they had been asked me about for making some changes to the store. I even helped move a couple of fixtures into new positions, too. As a thank you for helping out over the past few days, they gave me a HeroClix figure.

A big one: Starro the Conquerer, the 2007 Fall Convention Exclusive figure.

That’s right, it’s an alien, evil, giant starfish.
Yes, I actually put “alien,” “evil” and “giant starfish” in the same sentence.
And, yes, that felt almost as ridiculous/ludicrous to say (or type) as it was to read it.
At least I didn’t even mention that it’s really a mind-controlling, alien, evil, giant starfish.
(My operational theory: I think a lot of people at DC enjoyed a few too many recreational drugs in the 60s.)

It’s roughly the size of the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix ‘Clix. It’s currently on the shelf with the Jean Grey Phoenix, but I’ll have to see how well it fits once the DP figure gets here.

After some errand-running, I came home and geared up for watching The Middleman. Last night’s episode featured Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Andromeda) as a cryogenically frozen Middleman from the 60s. It was amusing to watch him not only play a MM whose style was so completely different than Matt Keeslar’s MM, but it was entertaining to see him in a role that afforded a bit of latitude with the tongue-in-cheek style of the show.

After the show I started taking pictures of the ‘Clix that will going up for auction on eBay. So far, I’ve got pictures of seven sets ready; I just need to set up the auctions themselves. We’ll see how this goes.

Belated Happy Birthday to :

I spent the latter part of yesterday hanging out with the guys at Far West for a bit before heading down to see Kate and Perry.

When I got home, I decided that it was time for to look in on Paragon City. I logged in (for the first time in THREE weeks!) and was invited to join a team for radio missions. I ran four or five missions and tacked another 2½ levels on Kurigari. Not too shabby for less than two hours’ work.

And today? Well, today is Monday. Selah.

Eight-Eight-Eight.

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games have gotten under way.

Last night, I went to see The Knight (explanation) The Dark Knight with Perry. He’d never seen it and I was up for seeing again. Hell… I’d even see it again, in IMAX. It was a nice way to spend a Thursday evening.

I got home and found that I wasn’t very tired, so I puttered around the apartment for a bit. Then, I remembered that ‘Nine has been semi-lobotomized for a while and started to reinstall XP on it. Suffice if to say that it’s still dysfunctional. Around 1:00, I could tell that I was winding down, but not “sleepy,” so I got Wednesday’s still-unread comics and sprawled across the bed to read. And read I did. About 1:30, took my glasses off, to “rest my eyes for a minute.”

A few minutes after 5:00, I was apparently done resting my eyes.

It was still too early to start prepping for work, so I did the only logical thing: I finished reading my comics. That took another twenty or thirty minutes. Plenty of time to return to The Dreaming… which I did. When I finally woke up to face the day, I decided that I wasn’t in a big rush to get to the office – I have a short work day, as I put in some extra hours over the past few days – so, I lounged about for a while. It was nice.

The morning’s commute – without any input from me – was rather heavily comic-themed:

Yep, technopathy is a good thing.

And for those who weren’t aware of it: Undercover Brother began as a webcomic before being picked up and adapted into a movie.

It’s been in the news that Morgan Freeman and his wife are preparing to divorce.

You know what?
I don’t really care.

What affect does it – or any of the above items – have on my day-to-day life?

At most, I could say that I feel badly that their marriage has come to an end. But, I’m Ivory Soap sure that they didn’t just wake up one morning and decide: “Hey, you know what sounds like fun? Let’s get a divorce!” It seems to me that decisions like this take some time – and soul-searching – to reach. And, if they have come to the realization that the best of their time together has passed, then I wish each of them the best of luck and hope that they find the happiness that they seek elsewhere… assuming that they haven’t achieved that level of happiness and/or satisfaction already.

Sometimes, it’s amusing to realize what it is that breaks us out of our morning doldrums and gets us ready to face the day. For me, this morning, it was remembering that I was planning on trying a fruit smoothie recipe this morning before heading to work. And I did. And It’s pretty good.

Last night’s Scion game was good. I almost got half the party killed… all because an NPC didn’t like the answer I gave to a riddle. So, a few rounds later: Sphinx: 0, Us: 1… kind of. In the process of some rather fancy bow (archery) work, it seems that ‘s character has taken over the role that the Sphinx held. We need to find a way to liberate her from that so that she can come party adventure with us.

Monday – 04 August 2008
A new week is just starting… and I want it to be the weekend already. This isn’t to say that the morning has been bad. Far from it, in fact. I just find that today’s motivation is low. Despite this, I’ve already accomplished a few things and have lined up a couple of things for tomorrow.

This morning started off slowly. I turned off the main alarm… after I finally figured out what it was. I then drifted in and out of consciousness for another hour. I got up, got ready and hit the door in under 30 minutes. A quick stop for a frozen mocha jumpstart and I made my way to the office.

Saturday – 02 August 2008
Last night, SaraRules, her mother and I headed into Aspen and saw the Aspen Chamber Symphony – conducted by David Zinman and featuring Andreas Haefliger on piano – perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, op. 15 (1854-59) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op. 55, ‘Eroica’ (1803). We had tickets to sit inside the Benedict Music Tent, but opted to sit out on the lawn and make a picnic of it. The entire experience was quite fun.

We came back home and hung out for a while before, SaraRules’ mom called it an evening. At that point, SaraRules and I decided to watch Reign Over Me, starring Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler. I’m not the biggest Adam Sandler fan, but I think that he did an excellent job in this roll.

Today has been lazy, but we’re about to head back into Aspen to hear An Evening of Words and Music with Condoleeza Rice. Yes, that Condoleeza Rice.

And after that… we’re off to visit Doc Holliday’s grave site.

I’ve been talking comics, movies and other assorted geekery with through the day. I was checking my Friends List a few minutes ago, when I stumbled across her most recent entry:

Come on! You know Holy Fuck, It’s a Shark! would be a great movie. It’s what educational films would be if Douglas Adams wrote them.

Though she was quoting in the first part, it was her Douglas Adams comment that cemented my decision to name Ms. today’s Human of the Day.

Tuesday: Coda
After work, I made haste to get to Far West Comics for the HeroClix tournament. Keith, the judge got there just after me. And no one else did. Fortunately, Matt and Nano (the store owners) were playing in the event, so it wasn’t a complete wash. I got my two boosters and pulled the following figures:

• Iron Fist
• Yellowjacket (Skrull)
• Arachne
• Captain America
• Kristoff
• Dum Dum Dugan (Human)
• Iron Man
• Doom
• Super Skrull: X-Men
  
• Impossible Man

I was very pleased to pull the Dugan, Doom and Impossible Man figures… very pleased, indeed. The others were all duplicates of figures that I got in my brick. I constructed my team of:

• Arachne
• Dum Dum Dugan
• Iron Fist and
• Kristoff

I used a Feat card – Loner – on Dum Dum, which gave him a bonus to his defensive value. And then, we went to work.

My first match was against Matt, he also fielded four figures:

• Clea
• Iron Fist
• Speedball
• Thor Girl

I split my force and moved to positions that afforded me decent lines of fire, while still providing cover. The first game went fairly quickly. I took out two of Matt’s pieces without losing anyone. Next up, I fought Nano. He brought

• Mole Man
• Spider-Man
• Spider-Slayer
• Tombstone
• Yellowjacket (Human)

I divided my force again, but in a slightly different pattern – I remembered to array my figures in a pattern that allowed the ranged members of each team to provide cross-field support to each other. That came in pretty handy. And some really good dice rolls didn’t hurt, either. I was able to eliminate Mole Man and the Spider-Slayer and was working on taking out Spider-Man when time ran out. Once again, I was able to keep everyone on my side alive, although Kristoff took a couple of solid hits.

For going 2-0, I got an Illuminati event dial, a Nowhere to Hide battlefield condition card and a map.

After the tourney, I came home… and had a lazy evening. Me, the couch, the TV and a crossword puzzle book. Mm-hmm, that’s right. And it was good.

  • My first inclination was to think: “Thanks… 150 years after the fact.” I’m not a reparationist. To be honest, I don’t really care about them, let alone want them. It’s great that there’s being recognition of the problem… but I think it’s a bit “too little too late.”
  • My second inclination was to change it to mean Dr. House, from the Fox TV show. That made the whole thing play out differently in my head… in a far more amusing manner.

• Tonight’s ‘Clix tourney is a 300 point sealed box draft. This means that each entrant has to purchase two boxes and construct a team from the figures he just purchased. I’m both intrigued and concerned about this: I’m used to being able to select the figures I want. This will prove very interesting. In order to get a rough feel for what it’s going to be like, I did a mock draft. I asked SaraRules to come up with ten numbers, from 1 to 60. Based on the numbers she gave me, I used the figure numbers to come up with a couple of options for teams.
