Thursday
Today’s highlight was watching Sissy and the twins play in the backyard. It was the first time that we have let the twins out; I’ve let Sissy out a couple of times. The kittens were very hesitant about “that place on the other side of the sliding glass door.” It’s one thing to look at it through the glass or the screen… being out in it? That’s an entirely different subject. But they ran around and explored. And played. Lightning chased a couple of bugs; Presto discovered a gap in the fence that leads to the front yard. (She just walked around the house and came in on the other side of the yard.)

While outside, I finally saw why one of the patches of grass has been turning brown: It wasn’t getting an adequate amount of water from the sprinkler. This was even more baffling since the sprinkler head is right next to that spot. *boggle* The sprinkler was spraying over that section of grass and the water that it was getting from an adjacent head was negligible. I may wind up replacing both heads.

Mary came by for a visit. She showed up as we were preparing dinner, so she stayed for a bite to eat and some after-dinner chat. And, I finally gave her the satellite dish that I’ve been meaning to give her for three weeks.

Wednesday
In a bold move to clear out some cobwebs (and since it meant doing something different), I accompanied and to the Hogle Zoo this afternoon. It was the first time that I’ve been there since May of 2003.

Came home for a bit (where I apparently donated a half-hour to Morpheus) and then it was of to Nyx and Nox’ to help Nyx celebrate her birthday. There, I saw a few folks whom I haven’t seen in too-long a time. And, there were game and comics-related conversations. What a bargain! What a bargain for me!1

Tuesday
Another fine day in the neighborhood. Mr. Rogers would be proud.

Jess and I stopped off to see Jenny… but she was at the Prince concert. From there, I had to stop at Borders to look up a couple of things and then home. On the way, Dad called. We had a semi-three-way call between Jess, him and me. I told him my “theory” as to why people have children: To do the yard work. It made him laugh. I then explained to him how I spent part of yesterday afternoon tearing out branches of the lilac shrubbery. (Sidebar: , if you have the chainsaw and/or trimmer (and possibly a ladder), I’m all for spending part of the day removing the rest of the problem shrubbery.) He said that’s why, when one gets older, you move to a place where someone else does the groundskeeping for you. Sage advice. Of course, it’s coming from a man who has a very well-kept yard. By his own hand.

stopped by after work. It seemed as though her car had developed a possible radiator leak. It hadn’t, but a coolant hose had a hole in it. Nor was it an easy one to reach. But I wrapped some duct tape around it and she’s taking it in tomorning to get replaced.

Monday
Labor Day is typically thought of as a restful day.
For the most part, it was. There was sleeping in and sitting about, but I did a few other things, too.

I not only thought about a bike ride, I went on one. The weather was good. It was still relatively early. All the signs pointed to “Go.” I inflated the tires on Jess’ bike (Mary has my back tire) and headed out. I started off in one direction, but soon realized that the path I had expected to be able to take didn’t exist. So, I modified my plan. It was a good ride… until I was near the end. That’s when the back wheel realigned itself. It didn’t come off the frame, but shifted enough to rub the frame badly – enough so that it wasn’t easily ridable. I had to call Jess to pick me up.

Returning home, I decided to mow the lawn. It hadn’t been cut in about 10 days; it was due. A… problem/issue with mowing the lawn is mowing around the lilac bushes. Some of the branches extend into either where the lawnmower goes or where I go when using the mower. I removed some of the offending branches. By hand. (This is why I’ve been clamoring about needing a chainsaw.) My hands and arms got a few scrapes and scratches in the process – and I could still use a chainsaw/hedge trimmer to tighten up the job – but I got it done. It even reminded me of one of Morgan Freeman’s lines from Bruce Almighty about how good it feels to do work by hand.

A few hours and a shower later, it was time for poker. Tonight’s turnout was small, but we played. And it was good.

Sunday
I slept in again this morning… and it felt great. I woke up to Lightning sprawled out behind me. I haven’t done much else since waking up, but it’s the weekend – I don’t feel any remorse about being lazy.

Stray Toasters

  • – I watched the Boilers lay a complete and utter beatdown on the Syracuse Orangemen. 51- 0. Or, as ESPN so eloquently put it: “Number 25 Boilermakers beat Orange to pulp.”
  • – I’m learning to enjoy Miguzi, Cartoon Network’s afternoon lineup. On Sundays, they have the “Wheel of Gooz,” in which they show two hours of a given toon. Today’s choice was Teen Titans. I got to see a couple of Season Two episodes that I had missed.

  • – I caught “Fearful Symmetry,” the rebroadcast of yesterday’s Justice League Unlimited episode. It would appear as though there’s a dark side to the animated DCU. I liked it. This episode also introduced The Question to the aDCU and JLU, teamed with Green Arrow and Supergirl. It was a good episode.
  • Wasatch Pizza – even day-old and reheated – is good. Very good.
  • …me and Del were singin’ Little Runaway, I was flyin’.
  • I’m reconfiguring a few things in the Halo Command Center. It’s quite a mess now, but should be much better when I’m done.
  • I’m getting the urge to draw. I believe that I’ll act upon said urge after the barbecue.
  • I’ve discovered that while I like lemonade, I’m not so fond of the tart/bitter aftertaste it leaves. But, when going to fast food restaurants, the non-carbonated options tend to be limited. My solution: If they have fruit punch, I ask the order-taker for a half-lemonade/half-fruit punch drink. Best of both worlds.

Time to raise up and ease on down the road.

Namaste.

  • I slept in.
  • Kate, Max and Perry came over and spent the afternoon. (I also got Perry hooked on a few fan films: Art of the Saber, Batman: Dead End, Batman: Dark Justice and Grayson.)
  • Dinner, dessert and chat at Land and Catherine’s.

Friday
I don’t know who turned Utah’s thermostat down, but they need to stop playing with it. The rain wasn’t so bad, but when it’s the third day of September – and still very much in the midst of “summer” – and I had to break out a turtleneck this morning, there’s something amiss.

I didn’t do much during the early part of the day. I spent a good portion of it awaiting two phone calls; I received neither of them.

The evening brought coffee and conversation – something to which I look forward at the end of each week. Tonight’s gathering was a good one. I saw a friend whom I haven’t seen in… four or five months, at least.

And, it looks as though Perry and Max and I have a “play date” tomorrow.

First up, we have American Idol meets The Monkees. And I like The Monkees, both the show and the band. I’m not really sure what to make of Caught yet. And, aside from Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire and The Birdcage, no movie that I can recall about crossdressing men has done well. A TV show..? As a “reality TV” show, I already hold out little hope for it; with it’s premise, I think that it’s more than one foot in the grave. Next: Al Sharpton?! Career counsellor? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?! And, do I really need to say anything about “Real World: Gilligan’s Island?” I think not.

Tuesday
I watched a little of the RNC this evening. Yeah, it shocked me, too. Someone on IRC had mentioned that Arnold Schwarzenegger was speaking and my curiosity was piqued. I have to admit: He gave a good speech. Years of being in the spotlight have served him well – He had the crowd pretty much wrapped around his finger. There was even a part of his speech that echoed JFK’s “Ich bin (ein) Berliner” comment. I’m not sure if that was planned or not, but it seemed to be very effective.

Then there were the Bush twins: Barbara and Jenna. Their introduction of their father wasn’t stilted, but it was stiff. Granted, this may have been one of the few, if not the first, time(s) that they have spoken before a crowd like this, but you would have thought that someone would have given them a little coaching.

But, I digress…

The DNC and the RNC are what I think would call: “A lot of political dick-waving.” Yes, the conventions are good ways to hear the messages of the parties. You get to hear voices of not only the candidates, but of their supporters. As the cameras panned around Madison Square Garden, I caught myself thinking (more than once): “Whoa… black people!” I even mentioned it to :

[20:16] : Whoa! Black people!
[20:16] : at the RNC?
[20:16] : they must be lost
[20:16] : lol asking for directions downtown
[20:17] : “this doesn’t look like the urban league…”

Anyway… the thought made me laugh because one of my supervisors at the USPS in North Carolina was Republican. And she was African-American, too. (And a mother and a grandmother and I’m sure there were a number of other labels that one could apply to her…) I remember her mentioning that someone had asked her “how and why” she could possibly be a Republican. Her response was simple, adroit and amazingly clear: The party spoke to many of the issues in which she believed.

Isn’t that what it’s all about: Voting for the candidates and/or parties who believe in the same issues as you? I think so. I also think that it would be a swift kick in the pants of the American voting system if third-party candidates had more of a voice. It would be interesting to see how the GOP and the Dems would deal with a credible threat from left field. Especially if the platform offered a viable balance of the best of both of the other parties’ issues/promises.

Saturday
I spent the afternoon with at Utah’s 24th Annual Belly Dance Festival. It was a great alternative to spending a beautiful Saturday afternoon in front the nerd. We saw dancers and dance troupes. bought a few things. tested a batch of henna on me. And, we saw , Carrie, Angela, Beth, Larry and .

Came home and checked on the twins. Lightning seemed a little more animated, but I think that his right paw is still a bit tender.

On to bowling (167 – 142 – 122 – 190 – 143 – 153 – 134). , and met us at the alley for 2D Physics fun. At breakfast, we were joined by , and . Standard amounts of hilarity and hijinks ensued.

Stray Toasters

  • Dad called this morning. All’s well (as well as can be in the middle of wedding preparations) on the northern homefront.
  • I was flipping channels this afternoon and came across a cartoon called Liberty’s Kids. I stopped because I thought that one of the voice actors was doing an Arnold Schwarzenegger impression as one of the characters. It was a pretty good one, too. I decided to look up who it was. It was Arnold. And the rest of the cast was equally impressive. (And it was far better than watching a bad Lord of the Rings knock-off on Superfriends.)

    “… and so, 20 guys later…”
“…I was with my cousins and my mother…”
    “…in Nashville…”
    “…and so 20 cowboys later…”
“…and she only went home with 40 bucks in her pocket.”

Let’s just say that the conversation from which these snippets were derived nearly resulted in someone spraying the breakfast group in Mr. Pibb. More than once.

  • Fuckin’ UDot!!! *shakes fist*
  • There’s something inherently wrong with having to turn on the heat in the car on the way home… at the end of August.
  • Fashion don’ts and cracked-out looking patrons in restaurants late at night. *shiver* I’m almost afraid to try and go to sleep. Almost.

Quote of the Day
Something that the writers of Justice League Unlimited have been keeping as an subplot is a burgeoning relationship between Wonder Woman and Batman. In “This Little Piggy,” tonight’s episode, the two are staking out a potential crime scene from a nearby rooftop, watching the people on the street. Wonder Woman tries to initiate some small talk:

Wonder Woman: Don’t you ever wish you were down there?
Batman: I’m down there all I need to be.
Wonder Woman: Yes, but it’s just a job to you. I’m talking about going down there and having some fun. Maybe.. maybe with someone special. *pause* No. No dating for the Batman… it might cut into your brooding time.
Batman: *stares at Wonder Woman for a moment*

One: Dating within the team always leads to disaster.

Two: You’re a princess from a society of immortal warriors; I’m a rich kid with issues. LOTS of issues, and….

Three: If my enemies knew I had someone special, they wouldn’t rest until they’d gotten to me… through her.

Wonder Woman: *crushes the head of a gargoyle on the rooftop* Next?
*An alarm goes off*
Batman: There! *jumps off roof*
Wonder Woman: Saved by the bell.*flies after Batman*

I think that I’ve mentioned how much I like the writing on this show. Scenes like this just serve to reinforce that feeling. And, as an added bonus: Batman sang! Quite well, at that.

Time for a shower and maybe a few hands of poker.

Namaste.

Friday
Let the church say “Amen.” Mm-hmm. Amen. Amen, choir.
Now turn with me to the Book of Weekend, Chapter 8, Verse 27…

The day was pretty good. I got a few things accomplished today. That’s always a “good” thing.

Tonight’s coffee was small: , , and me. And I did some drawing for the first time in far too long. Must practice more…

Lightning seems to be favoring a paw a little; the vet said to call back if he’s not feeling better after the weekend. But, he’s still been an attention whore. So has Presto. And, oddly enough, Sissy, too…. when the twins aren’t around.

Thursday
I saw Jenny (Jess’ sister) again this morning. We talked for a little bit; she still makes me laugh.

The day ended, nicely, with dinner with Jess, Mary, Pat and Staci.

  • It seems as though the domain transfer and propagation is complete. Thanks to those who suffered through the yellow-orange doom that I stuck there until it was working.

  • Fuckin’ UDoT… It would be nice to actually USE all of the roads that were supposedly repaired/upgraded during the pre-Olympics construction. But, that’s obviously asking far too much. So, what do we have? Closed sections of the interstate. On-/Off-ramps that are closed… but just in one direction. Clogged surface streets. And, of course: Utah drivers. *shakes fist*

Quote of the Day
While at dinner, I noted a man at the next table with John Edwards-like hair. Of course, I commented on it. From there, John Kerry came up. That brought up this gem:

Swanny: You know, I always wondered what the child of Herman Munster and Lurch (Thanks, Jess.) would look like…
Mary: I think she was on The Golden Girls. (Bea Arthur)

Time for some pre-bed poker.

Namaste.
