Sunday
An atypical day… and a very cool one. We (, , and I) headed to Park City to meet some friends (including ) at the Park City Arts Festival.

The outing started with an attempt to find parking relatively near the area where we usually park on P.C. excursions. No such luck. We had to park at Deer Valley (a couple of miles away) and take a shuttle bus into town. No biggie. We ate at The Eating Establishment. It was a nice restaurant and the food was good.

(rant)
About halfway through lunch, the elderly couple at the table next to us prepared to leave. The woman stood; her husband attempted to do so… but was unsuccessful. The gentleman shifted a little in his seat, braced his back against the wall and attempted again. He was able to get part of the way up, but couldn’t quite stand. His wife came over to help him. She didn’t have the strength and/or leverage to help him. I went over, asked if I could help and offered my hand. He took it and pulled himself up. I held on to his arm for a moment while he got his balance and then returned to my chair.

The irritating factor was that no one else seemed willing to help the man. The restaurant was nearly full. I noticed that other people were watching the man… and seemed very nonchalant about “his problem.” It was a simple thing to help the man to his feet. I waited a few moments before stepping in because:

  • I didn’t want to seem as though I was intruding
  • I didn’t want to infringe on the gentleman’s sense of pride
  • I wanted to see if the wife would be successful in helping him.

Simple things. But there was a sense of personal honor. No, there were two matters of honor: The man’s and my own – no one enjoys feeling helpless or unable to do things for him-/herself; and I couldn’t stand by and watch as the couple was in what had to be an uncomfortable situation.

So, I acted. No one else – staff or customer – seemed willing to put themselves out to help someone who was obviously in need of aid. It seems odd to have to put it that way: “…put themselves out,” but that’s pretty much how it came off. No one was willing to take a few seconds to do a small measure of human decency and kindness. *sigh* often says that she has little to no hope for the fate of humanity. Today, I could understand why.
(/rant)

After lunch, we wandered up and down Main Street and saw MANY artists and their creations. It was great. I wished that I had lots of surplus money because I saw far more things that I wanted than I could afford. I did treat myself to a couple of prints that I liked. I did get many artists’ business cards and sign up for mailing lists¹. Hopefully, this way I will be able to at least keep an eye open for items that I’d like to purchase at a later date.

Leaving Park City, we headed back to SLC and stopped at Borders. We were joined by Robert and Mike. The five of us decided to have dinner at Cafè Trang. I’d never been there before, but I had heard good things about it. The restaurant lived up to its reputation.

After dinner, , , and I came back to the apartment. We sat and talked… and then watched the rebroadcast of Real Time with Bill Maher.

And that’s the day in a nutshell.

Namaste.

More or less in order:

  • I had lunch at La Puente with . It was fun… even if she thought that I was always making fun of her. I wasn’t – it was the first time I’d met her. Never make fun of someone the first time you meet them. Any time after that, however is fair game…
  • I came home and got on the computer for a while. Found myself not wanting to be online. (Yeah, I know. It concerned me a bit, too.)
  • Went into the living room and watched TV… which turned into the TV watching me. I apparently slept through a pretty heavy rain storm. *shrug*
  • I woke up in time to watch the episode of Teen Titans that I had thought was going to be on this morning.
  • Now, I’m watching pre-season football on ESPN.

The Bucs are snapping the Jets off a little somethin’. With 05:00 left in the fourth, they are up 30 – 7.

Not sure if I’ll be able to see this one or not, as it’s playing on RaveTV. I think that it’s a Baltimore-area station, so I’m taking it on faith that I won’t see this game.

And soon, it will be time for another round of two-dimensional physics bowling.

Saturday
So far, it’s just a lazy morning of toons.
Mm-hmm.. tha’s right!

  • New episode of XME. Interesting premise: What if Wolverine had been cloned? The clone in question was a teenaged girl… who took down the entire X-team. And nearly took down Wolverine, too.
  • Teen Titans was a rerun of an ep that I’d already seen. *shrug*
  • Members of the Justice League guest-starred on Static Shock. With Brainiac as the villain. The League had been attacked (and mind-controlled) by Brainiac and Static was next on the list. After removing four League’s control disks, Static was assessing who was left:

    Hawkgirl… Batman… Flash… J’onn…
    Who’m I forgetting?

Oh yeah… The Lord of the Ring.

Friday
Not a (completely) bad day. In fact, aside from… about an hour (roughly from 4:00 – 5:00 PM), it was a good day.

After work, a few friends (including a guest appearance by ) met up at Borders and hung out and then we went off to a late dinner.

  • Most people who have been around me for a while have heard me use the phrase “…said the Actress to the Bishop” (or “…said the Bishop to the Actress”). It is a British expression, but given the fact that the head of each Ward here behind the Zion Curtain is also called “Bishop,” it adds an all-new twist/flavor to it. I first learned of it because of a Brian Bolland print called – aptly enough: Actress and The Bishop. For the meaning/origin of the phrase, see this.

  • I heard this on the radio this morning… then saw an article in USA Today… and I just don’t know what to say about it: “Louisiana black church will pay whites to attend”. No. That’s not true. I do know what to say: What in the Nine Hells is this man thinking?!? I understand the desire to bolster the ranks of the congregation. I also think that it’s commendable that he would like to have a more racially-integrated congregation. But to pay people to come to church?! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!?! To me, that steps out of the realm of “faith” and crosses over into “mercenary.” Think about it: If this idea was to catch on, it wouldn’t be to far-fetched to see someone pitting church against church: “Well, Church X is offering me this much to attend Sunday service… How much am I worth to you?”

Wednesday (reprise)
I was right: A day that starts with The Spirit of Radio can’t be bad.

Work was painless; in fact, it was pretty damned fun. Jonahs came in and helped us with an inventory count. The day moved pretty quickly and there weren’t any problems.

After work, there was coffee/beer group night. Tonight was a beer night; we went to the Porcupine Grill. The food was good (as usual), the beer was just right (a nice Raspberry Wheat was this evening’s choice) and dessert was a rich fudge brownie with two scoops of vanilla bean ice cream that was the perfect coda to the meal.

After that, we stopped at and ‘s house. We sat on their patio and talked. It was a nice way to round out the day.

Just about halfway through the week… and the week is going well.

The Spirit of Radio greeted me this morning. How can a day be bad when it starts with such a damn fine song?

I saw this on Slashdot a few minutes ago. My inner geek giggled with delight. Yep. “Giggled.” I felt it. If I had unlimited finances, a sci-fi shopping spree of ludicrous proportions would be under way.

It sounds jaw-droppingly callous, not to mention absurd: An Internet gambling parlor, sponsored by the U.S. government, on politics in the Middle East. Anyone, from Osama bin Laden to your grandmother, can bet over the Web on such questions as whether Yasser Arafat will be assassinated or Turkey’s government will be overthrown.
