Three down, one in the chamber and one to go.

I ran out of coffee creamer last week and neglected to pick some up. But, I’m trying something (again) that I haven’t done in a while: using ice cream instead of milk. I like it. I still need to find the right blend, but it seems like two(-ish) tablespoons do the job nicely for my travel mug.

She Talks to Angels is nearing completion. Thank God. (No pun intended.) I have a little more detail work to do and it should be pretty much good to go. I’m also deciding whether I want to color the piece or just color selected parts of it. I’m also thinking about how I want to do Ed’s Song. The content will remain as I planned, but I may go for more of a sketch style than a detailed drawing.

The Best: Pink Cadillac
Bruce Springsteen vs. Natalie Cole

The Boss’ version is a hard-driving (again, no pun intended), almost-garage band sounding song about a guy’s love for his ride. (As much as I hate to make the comparison, it’s kind of like the way Danny Zuko sings about Greased Lightning in Grease.) Ms. Cole’s version has much more of an R&B feel and swing to it… but it just doesn’t handle the curves quite as well as the original.

This one goes to Springsteen.

The Scales of Justice
I found my way to Paragon City last night. A few members of my SG and my coalition were on, but they were already involved in teams and/or missions. After some aimless wandering, I decided to hop the train to Brickstown. A little more wandering, but I did find some bad guys in need of a beat down. I headed back to Talos Island and was invited to join a team… in Brickstown. I joined the team and got back on the train. We went up against The Council. In the words of Dr. Peter Venkman: “We came, we saw, we kicked their asses.” After a couple of missions, I decided to call it a night.

  • I discovered Matt Silady’s The Homeless Channel last night, while cruising boingboing.net. Very interesting premise. I will have to add this to my next order at Dr. Volt’s. I signed up for the THC GoogleGroup last night. At the bottom of the sign-up page was a section for comments, so I left one. Less than an hour later, I received confirmation of my acceptance to the group… and a brief “thank you” message from Matt.

  • I know that there is a Speed Racer project in development; I loved the cartoon as a kid, but I’m only *ehn* about the prospect of a live-action movie. But… Warner Brothers is now talking about making a Jonny Quest movie. This piques my curiosity quite a bit. Hopefully, they won’t dumb it down; the 60s series was pretty well-written, even if some of the episodes’ content would be dated today; the 80s/90s series also had intermittent glimmers of greatness.

For some reason, I keep thinking that it’s only Tuesday. Not really sure why.

Last night’s game did not end with mass death – neither ours nor the mad god that we were facing. I consider that a “good” thing. That’s not to say that things didn’t hit the fan in short order. Because they did. With the quickness. Our mage attempted to use a scroll to ‘port us out of harms way… and rolled a critical failure. (For those non-gamers out there, think: “Put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye” bad.) The raw magic wound up taking the form another spell – Limited Wish. We got some rather… unusual… results:

  • Three of our party returned to our home city
  • One was returned to another part of the home city.
  • My character… um… “slid sideways,” into a nominally parallel plane. (For lack of a better analogy, think of Patrick Swayze in Ghost – I could see/hear things around me, but not interact with anything or anyone.) Oh, and while everyone else went home, I stayed in the same place, which was about 10-14 days away from home. Greeeeat. Fortunately, I’m playing a monk and, as such, have a couple of feats that allow me to travel faster than normal and recover from fatigue faster than normal.

Fortunately, our group knows a mage who was not only able to find me, but also open a portal to get me home… after five days, by which time I’d already covered about 2/3 of the journey. (Like I said: “Bionic monk.”) Once everyone was together – and fully recovered – and we set about our original plan: Amassing an army to go and whoop some elevated being’s ass. Turns out that in coming to our world, the god had broken a pact among the pantheon and turned himself into Public Enemy #1. (Although, if he had turned himself into Flava Flav, I would have been much more amused.) We’ll see how things go next gaming session.

Tuesday – 07 August 2007
First off: The Rush concert was fun. My one gripe would lie in the hands of their sound engineer: He couldn’t seem to find the right balance of treble and bass… and wound up cranking the treble WAY up. Vapor Trails up. But, other than that, I had a blast! I was surprised at the range of ages present, but they were (more or less) all into it. The set list featured a nice mix of the old and the new, including a few surprises. They were surprises to me, as I had avoided seeing/hearing about the set list. I was also surprised to discover that the Maytag dryers were no longer part of the stage equipment. But, what they were replaced with made me laugh, especially when I finally sussed out exactly what they were. AND, they were a recurring gag throughout the show. But, one of the best surprises of the night was this. All-in-all, it was a great way to kick off the week.

Today has been… not bad. The workout was decent, but I had problems on the flat bench – I couldn’t get my 3rd set at 205 pounds. So, I did six reps of 205 and five reps of 185. But, after the rest of the workout was done, I went back and banged out three more reps at 205… and a slightly less-impressive fourth rep. But, I got all ten reps in. And that made me feel better.

Tonight is D&D night. I will finally get a chance to play after… a month away, I think. Holidays and other things and whatnot. We’re still at a bit of a crossroads as to what to do. And I think that at least one of us may/will die. But, as the song says:

Why are we here?
Because we’re here.
Roll the bones.

And that’s just what we’re gonna do.

The fifth and sixth episodes, “Angel Spit (Parts I & II)” were written by Warren Ellis… and are good. The seventh episode, “Legacy,” also written by Brian Pulido had a pulp feel… and was not only MUCH better than “Revenge,” but might have even made up for it.

Saturday – 04 August 2007
Despite oversleeping this morning, it’s been a good – and nominally productive day. I don’t know what it was, but after Clitorati, I came home and was ready to hit the rack within an hour. Which put quite a damper on any thoughts I may have had about visiting Paragon City. I was up shortly before 7:00, but saw the error of my ways and returned to The Dreaming.

Once I got up and dealt with the necessary hygiene rituals, I met Perry and the boys for coffee. When they left, I did some more work on She Talks to Angels. I’m rather pleased with the way the angel has turned out, but a little less enthusiastic about the figure that’s supposed to look like my grandmother. Which means that I need to do more portrait work. My other big concern with this piece is/was: Fabric. It folds and twists and billows. Depicting that isn’t exactly my strong suit, but I am happy with the way it looks.

dropped by for a bit, to say “Hello,” so I chatted with her for a while until I got a message from Chris (we’re going to have to start numbering Chrises now, too) asking if I was still interested in going to the gym. I was. We did. I got there before him, so I spent 10 minutes on the recumbent bike. I haven’t done that in a long time; it was good. Chris showed up and it was game time. I wasn’t paying attention when I set up the weights for my bench press and wound up doing 225 pounds on my first set. Brilliant, I am. Not easy, but I did it. I dropped it back down to 205 pounds for the second and third sets, although I had to do the last 5 reps of the third set at 185. Today also saw a lot more presses than I have done (in one workout) in a long time: Flat bench, incline and decline.

Back home for a much-needed and very refreshing shower and a late lunch. And to kill some time. Tonight, I’m going to the Rita Coolidge concert at the Sandy Amphitheatre, thanks to Kate. I asked her to find out about tickets and a couple of days later, she presented me with one. I should send her a fruit basket. (Bonus points for knowing where that came from.) I think that I would really like to take a nap, but I have a few things that I should take care of before heading to the concert. *sigh* No rest for the wicked, I guess.

…and I still need to make (another) trip to the Garden of Sweden, which I most definitely will not get around to tonight.

I watched Casino Royale and finished Dark City last night.

  • Casino Royale: Bond. James Bond is back. I haven’t watched this movie since its theatrical release. It was every bit as enjoyable on the small screen as it was on the silver screen. Daniel Craig makes an excellent rough-around-the-edges, newly-minted 007. It will be interesting to watch as this “blunt instrument” develops into the refined spy who defined cool for many a movie goer over the past 40-odd years. If, in fact, they are using this movie to “reboot” the James Bond franchise, I will be quite interested to see how they portray Bond as going from cold and detached, to falling for Vesper Lynd, to once again setting aside his emotions… only to later fall for – and marry – Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo.

As the opening – and closing – credits rolled, I listened to You Don’t Know Me, the theme for this movie. Performed by Soundgarden and Audioslave front man, Chris Cornell, it stylistically harkens back to older Bond themes. It was also interesting to note how it was worked, very subtly, into the score… even in places where one would expect to hear the classic “007 Theme.”
  • Dark City: As I watched this movie, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between it and The Big O:
    • Both take place in cities where people have lost their memories.
    • Both take place in isolated cities: Dark City is a… petri dish, for lack of a better term; Paradigm City has been sealed off from the rest of the world, inside a giant dome.
    • The protagonist lives a little outside the norm – both John Murdoch and Roger Smith know that “something isn’t right” with themselves and in their respective cities – and question the norms.
    • Both protagonists have, in supporting roles, a prominent female figure and a police officer as a somewhat reluctant ally.
    • Both features are done, to borrow a phrase from Warner Brothers Animation Studios, in a “dark deco” (and in some instances, gothic) style.

I’m not entirely sure what I expected to get from the movie. It borrowed from many different concepts and blended them into a dark oleo. I’m not saying that it was bad – or that it was done poorly – but it was definitely… different. One thing that I did note was Jennifer Connelly’s presence. No, not for that reason (but, yes, she is nice to look at). I saw her and thought about her role in Ang Lee’s Hulk, in which she played the romantic lead opposite another man who not only had metahuman abilities, but also had… issues. I enjoyed the movie, but it would probably take another viewing for me to sort everything out about the movie.

Two down, three to go and a new month begins.

I don’t know what the deal is/was, but last night’s sleep was phenomenally craptacular. I think that I was awakened – for no apparent reason – at least three times between 2:00AM and 5:00AM. And, I woke up again at 5:56… 29 minutes before the alarm was scheduled to go off. *grblsnrkx*

Last night was a game night: All Flesh Must Be Eaten. We didn’t die, but a Plague Marine did its damnedest to try and change that. We aren’t out of the scenario – or the proverbial woods – yet. But, we did manage to show the Marine who had superiority through numbers/firepower. Barely.

The Best: Come Together
The Beatles vs. Aerosmith: I like the Aerosmith cover, quite a bit… but, for me, the boys from Liverpool’s version has the edge.

    Vincent: Why not?
Jules: Pigs are filthy animals. I don’t eat filthy animals.
Vincent: Bacon tastes gooood. Pork chops taste gooood.
Jules: Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I’d never know ’cause I wouldn’t eat the filthy motherfucker. Pigs sleep and root in shit. That’s a filthy animal. I ain’t eat nothin’ that ain’t got enough sense enough to disregard its own faeces.
Vincent: How about a dog? Dogs eats its own feces.
Jules: I don’t eat dog either.
Vincent: Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal?
Jules: I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.
Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?
Jules: Well we’d have to be talkin’ about one charmin’ motherfuckin’ pig. I mean he’d have to be ten times more charmin’ than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I’m sayin’?

Tuesday – 31 July 2007
Last night, I made a pilgrimage to the Garden of Sweden. I exited empty-handed – I realized that I needed to take a few measurements of a banner that I want to hang before buying the hardware to hang it. Somehow, that just made an odd kind of sense. Go figure. I saw plenty of other things that made me go,”Hm… that would look nice in (fill-in-the-room).” But, willpower won out, once again.

The pre-work morning moved along rather nicely except for two things:

  1. One of my contact lenses tried to make a jailbreak shortly before I woke up. I put it in solitary confinement in a saline bath. It has seen the error of its ways and has been successfully rehabilitated.
  2. PoW monkeys. Two of them. Driving slowly. In the “left general purpose lane” on the way up Traverse Mountain.

The Scales of Justice
I decided to patrol the mean streets of Paragon City for a while. Most of the members of my SG who were online were in the middle of a task force – a long series of missions – so they weren’t available for teaming. I hooked up with a Blaster and we headed to Founders Falls to take on The Council. And, just before we got to the mission entrance, Founders came under attack by a Rikti invastion force. Yay. Thanks to the fact that there were not many available Controllers or Defenders, we got our clocks cleaned – repeatedly – on the mission. So, we switched to a Council of Thorns mish. We picked up a meat shield Tanker to pull aggro and take the heavy hits while we beat on things. That went much better. After that, I joined a Rikti invasion team in Talos Island, to repulse an invasion force there. That went pretty well too.

Return to the work-a-day grind.

Yesterday was good. I didn’t make it to the Garden of Sweden, but I did manage to pull off a few other tricks, including lunch with , a brief stint in Paragon City and seeing , whom I haven’t seen in what has to be at least a year-and-a-half.

The Best
I may have to consider something of a “variation on a theme” (I’m not sure if the pun is intentional or not) to handle instances where an artist/a band has redone one of their previous works. In some cases, the artist/band just reworks the piece; in others, they are working with another artist or group.

Another day in the lovely Utah sun. Temps seem to be creeping back in the triple-digit direction.

So far, it’s been a good day. I was considering going to see You Kill Me, until I found that it is no longer playing in this area. That’s something that drives me nuts: A movie will open locally… in one theatre. And then, it disappears with nary a trace of its passing. I had the same problem last week in trying to find a theatre that was playing Sunshine: Eleventy-seven theatres in the greater Salt Lake City metro area and only one theatre had it. Bah.

Crossposting seems to be back on track, so let’s give this a go, shall we…?

The day was good. Work wasn’t bad and I had plenty to keep me occupied. That’s never a bad thing, “idle hands” and whatnot. At lunch, I fed not only myself, but also my four-color crack addiction… with a single serving of plastic crack as dessert. Total win-win situation.

Came home and read a bit of Deathly Hallows. I’m seven chapters in. Stuff has happened. Spells have been cast. And monkeys! Flying monkeys! Wait… that was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Nevermind.

Tuesday – 24 July 2007
Merry Mormon Christmas!

It’s Pioneer Day here in the Land Behind the Zion Curtain. The commemoration of the day when Brigham Young, leading “a rag-tag fugitive fleet on a lonely quest: A shining planet territory, known as Earth Deseret,” came into what is now known as the Salt Lake Valley and said, “That’s it. I’m done. Set up camp. Call me when supper’s ready.” What this mainly means is that many local businesses are closed (not us, though…). And there will be parades. And fireworks. And stuff. And whatnot.

Last night, after work, I hung out with and the kids for a bit. I also borrowed her copy of Deathly Hallows. I think I made it to page 16 before I was powerless to resist the siren call of the bed.

And that’s another thing…

I know that dreaming basically sticks the subconscious mind on a couple of Vivarin and two liters of Mountain Dew. But, last night…? Damn. Who added crack to the mix?!

Most people who know me (especially at Clitorati) know that I think in terms of pop culture media/trivia and “hyperlinked” thoughts – and there’s not necessarily much conscious thought given to some of the connections I make… but the connections are logical and valid, when I trace them back.

Last night’s dreams were bi-fucking-zarre. Not only was the pop culture trivia there, but a lot of disparate parts of my life… all jumbled together.

I woke up, staring at the ceiling… and I think my first waking words were literally,”What the fuck was that?!”

The Scales of Justice
Before reading, though, I took a trip to Paragon City. No sooner than I had logged on, I was invited to join a team of my supergroup members. We took on The Council and The Freakshow. There were no Shadow Freaks, though… I was a little disappointed. But, it wasn’t my mission, so not part of my storyline. Oh, na. We also took on a safeguard mission: Prevent a bank robbery. We did. With the quickness. (And… there were a few deaths, but that’s not what we’re focusing on here.)

The Best
Madonna’s cover of Don McLean’s American Pie just hit the iTunes rotation. It’s good. I like it. (Of course, I also like Weird Al’s parody, The Saga Begins (video) But, I think that Mr. McLean’s version wins out over the former Material Girl’s version.

Thursday: coda
The post-work evening looked rather drab, until called and asked if I was interested in getting sushi.

Well, let me think about that… Sure!

And out we went. Tepanyaki Japanese Steak House. I think that this is the first time that I’ve eaten in a Japanese steak house since I went to visit and Tyanna back on Long Island. (And that’s been a while!) It was fun… even though I missed the shrimp that the chef tossed at me. Oh, well. I had a Chicken and Shrimp combination plate, with Ika (squid) nigiri and California Rolls. Quite tasty. It also reminded me of Kabuto, the Japanese steakhouse that Mom used to take us to in Greensboro, so it was not only a nice change of pace, it brought back a few pleasant memories.

    Dear Kate,
I wonder what early Borg looked liked? Was it just some alien race that decided to go cybernetic? If so, when did they start assimilating other races? Is there a species 01? Questions like this just go on and on, like why do the Borg speak English(they even think in it). I find these questions confusing, maybe you could give me some insight.

    Hi 23,
Well, since you’ve asked me… early Borgs are among us! You’ve seen those people who walk around dazed with an earbud in one ear — early Borg! And those people who have a phone on one hip, an iPod on the other, and a PDA, and have to have the latest and greatest electronic gadgets — oh yeah, Borg too! Besides, haven’t we all seen the way the cellphone has evolved, remember how big they used to be only a few years ago? Next we’ll be implanted with our phone and we’ll have to plug the charge cable into our arm to power the batteries. See, we’re being consumed and dependent upon our technology… Technology is overtaking us! Grab your less advanced 8-tracks, and manual typewriters — and go! Run for the hills! Save yourselves!!!

  • The theme from The Simpsons, played on two guitars… by the same guy. Check it out.

Wednesday (coda)
The expedition to Dr. Volt’s was a success. I went back to work with my four-colored bounty and three (and ONLY three) pieces of plastic crack: Patriot, Stature and Sunspot. While I can understand why there’s no Iron Lad figure, I’m still a little unsure of why they did nor do a figure for Hawkeye (Kate Bishop). Oh, well… maybe they’ll put one in the next set.

Four-Color Coverage
Let’s get to it:

  • Action Comics #852 – It’s the Jimmy Olsen issue. Watch as Jimmy – and his reporter pal, Clark Kent – observe a release hearing for The Kryptonite Man. Also, we see what led to Jimmy getting his handy-dandy Superman hypersonic signal watch. And, what’s going on with those monkeys at the zoo…?
  • All Flash #1 – Wally West is back. And, he’s not exactly happy about the circumstances of his return. Here are the opening, pre-title, captions:

My name is Wally West. I’m the Flash. The fastest man alive.

    And I’m still… too… late.

I got super-speed back in grade school. Freak accident. Grew up running alongside my uncle, Barry Allen, the Flash before me.

About midway through my adult career with the Justice League, I met Bart Allen, Barry’s grandson, who inherited Barry’s speed. The boy was flaky, unpredictable, and had the attention span of a bullet. He got codenamed “Impulse,” and it was probably the first thing that ever stuck to him.

His grandmother, my Aunt Iris, brought Bart to me to train, and I spent months trying to figure out what I’d done to hack her off.

    I misjudged them both.

Over the years, I watched Bart go from “Impulse the annoying” to “Kid Flash the amazing.” I learned to like him. A lot.

When I decided to retire with the wife and kids, I had no hesitation about giving the Flash costume and identity to him. That’s what the Flashes do. We run our race, then we pass the baton to the next guy.

I always figured I’d come back to check up on Bart–

    –not to catch his killer.

  • The Brave and the Bold #5 – Batman and the Legion. Supergirl, Green Lantern and Adam Strange. And, what’s this..?! Another (somewhat different) Batman/Karate Kid fight? And what happens when you put a Kryptonian on a planet in a trinary-solar system? Three guesses. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
  • Countdown: 41 – “Secret identities are such a pain…” Mary Marvel has a few moments of introspection. And, holy Titan A.E., Batman…. are Donna Troy, Jason Todd and Monitor #1 (I think) having a moment?:

Donna: You deserve thanks, too, for helping our reality, and for helping Jason and me try to discover our places in it at last.
Jason: She’s right. And we don’t even know your name.
Monitor: Any gratitude paid me is irrelevant. My name is my mission– to maintain the balance in which you are elements and to prevent the coming of the Great Disaster.
Jason: Then I’m gonna call you Bob.
    Donna: “Bob?”
Jason: Because “To maintain the balance in which you are elements and to prevent the coming of the Great Disaster” is too much to say every time I want to ask you to pass the ketchup or something.
Monitor: Mm. Very well, if calling me “Bob” will simplify matters for you, do as you will.

And, , you’re going to want to pick this one up to see just who it was that kept Karate Kid from returning to the 31st Century.

  • Green Lantern Corps #12 and #13 – Two dead Green Lanterns. Guy Gardner… the prime suspect?! Kilowog on a rampage. What’s wrong with Mogo? What are all of those… yellow… spores on its surface?
  • Justice League of America #11 – First off, let me say how beautifully painted (or possibly drawn) this issue was; Gene Ha did some amazing work here. Brad Metzler wasn’t exactly a slouch either: Red Arrow and Vixen, buried alive. No signs of help on the way. And time is running out.
  • Martha Washington Dies – This is the closing chapter in a book that Frank Miller started nearly twenty years ago, Give Me Liberty. I never read that book, but having read this one, I think that I might have to track it down.
  • Superman #664 – Magic + Kryptonians = Not good (for the Kryptonian, that is). Arion apparently knows this. And using this knowledge, takes Superman down… Just before a newly-minted government team, dubbed “Squad K,” comes to kick Superman’s butt… Just before the Justice League comes to… well, you get the picture. And, as you can imagine, none of that does much to improve Superman’s mood.
  • Superman/Batman #38 – Someone’s going around inciting fear in some of the citizens of Metropolis. And their ultimate target: A certain high-flying Kryptonian hero. But, the instigator is not The Scarecrow. Nor is it Sinestro nor anyone in his newly-formed Sinestro Corps. But, once their – and their co-conspirator’s – identity is revealed, I don’t think that you’ll be surprised at just who it is.
  • Ultimate Power #5 and #6 – Irresistable Force (Nick Fury, along with the Ultimates, X-Men, Spider-Man and the FF), meet Unmovable Object (the Squadron Supreme). And… what usually happens when two groups of superhumans get together? That’s right: BIG. FIGHT. Knock-down. Drag-out. The only thing missing is hair-pulling. And, just who is that person lurking around the Helicarrier with Nick Fury? They look… familiar.
  • Ultimate Spider-Man #111 – I stopped reading this title (regularly) almost a year ago. I saw the cover of this issue and decided to flip through it. The few pages that I read made me decide to take a chance on it. It wasn’t a bad choice. This issue was aptly titled “The Talk.” May Parker. Peter Parker. The kitchen table. And the truth about Spider-Man. In the words of the Rush song, Force Ten:

    Tough times demand tough talk
    demand tough hearts

Well worth the price. This issue also sees the end of Mark Bagley’s run as writer. He has been on the book since it began, nearly ten years ago – these days, you don’t find a writer who sticks with a title for that long, especially at one of the big publishing houses. I won’t say that Mr. Bagley saved the best for last – he had some good stories along the way – but he definitely goes out with a bang.

Stray Toasters

  • I have breathed new life into my LEGO and Bionicle LEGO watches! All thanks to the modern technology known as “new batteries.”
  • Unfortunately, my clear-backed Fossil watch seems to have suffered fatal deceleration trauma. I need to take it into a jewelry shop and see if it can be made whole once more.
  • Thanks to for sending me a link to this picture.
  • Acolyte Derek’s training proceeds nicely, as evidenced by this post. He also gets bonus credit for this post, particularly the second cartoon – the seventh bullet point on this list is why… and he wasn’t aware of that item when he created his blog entry.
  • : NPR is running a series called “Vocal Impressions: Hearing Voices,” where the commentator “…has been asking listeners to describe their impressions of famous voices.” They are currently on Round Six; Round Five apparently included “She Whose Sole Purpose On Earth Is for Me to Ridicule” (scroll down for the comments).
  • Guitar Hero fans should take a look at this t-shirt.

“IKEA: meatballs, tasty…”

Sunday – 15 July 2007
I woke from an otherwise good sleep a few times this morning… “just because,” as best I can figure. Around 9:30, I had my fill of lying in bed, so I made my way to the Command Center. After a few minutes of surfing, messaged me to see if I was still interested in going to the driving range. I was, so I got ready and hit the road.

I had originally considered going to Pebblebrook, in Sandy, but we opted for Murray Parkway, instead. Nice driving range and you can use drivers there. We hit a couple of buckets of baskets of balls. She said that my form looked good, but she suggested that I move in – slightly – on the tee. Lo and behold, it made a decent difference in my drives – better contact and fewer ground-skimmers.

Afterwards, we headed to the Garden of Sweden. We’d worked up appetites on the range – and we had both skipped breakfast – so we decided to have lunch before shopping. Swedish meatballs. Salad. Potatoes. And “Chocolate Overload Cake.” Mm-hmm, that’s right. Then the shopping began. My mission: Dining room table. We wandered through the store, looking at other things, before going to get… the… the… um… Where are the tables that are supposed to be here?! *blink* The entire bin of boxes – no, where the boxes should have been – was empty.

*braincramp*

Fine. I went to find a sales associate. He looked. None in the store. I corrected him: There was one – the floor display upstairs. He made a call… and a short while later, I was the proud owner of a new table, at a discounted price. Selah. We loaded it into <lj user=”suzie_lightning”>’s car and brought it here. It looks good in the dining area… but in it’s “small” form, the room seems to swallow it. To me, that just means that I need something on the walls to fill the blank space. Good thing I have a couple of ideas of how to do that.

The Best
Although it’s not radically different from the original, I prefer the No Doubt version of It’s My Life to the Talk Talk version.

On the flip side, Genesis’ version of Land of Confusion still wears the crown, although the Disturbed cover isn’t bad… it’s just not the same. Likewise, I prefer the Don Henley rendition of The Boys of Summer to the version by The Ataris.

Stray Toasters

  • I talked with the ‘rents today. They’re doing well.
  • I exercised restraint in the Garden of Sweden, quite a feat for the Patron Saint of Poor Impulse Control.
  • This looks interesting…
  • The world is not enough
But it is such a perfect place to start, my love
  • For Derek: Stephen Colbert’s Tek Jansen #1
  • If Daredevil is known as “The man without fear,” doesn’t it make more sense to juxtapose him with Hal Jordan (or any other Green Lantern), whose power derives from his/their ability to overcome fear (or, in Jordan’s case, be without fear)? Instead, they always stack him up against Batman. I can understand that, in the sense that aside from DD’s radar sense, he’s the closest thing to “baseline human without superpowers” to put up against Gotham’s protector… aside from the late Captain America. But still… *shrug*
  • Pop Quiz: What do you do when the God of Hunger – the very same god you’re trying to destroy – shows up to say “Hi,” while you’re in the middle of trying to get one of the weapons you’re planning on using to destroy him?Did I mention “He’s a god,” already? I did? Okay… just wanted to be clear on that point.

I think that it basically comes down to: “We’re boned.”
(Remember Dunwich County? Yeah… that level of boned.)

  • I realize that putting old shows on DVD and sticking ’em in your local video purveyor is the new “in” thing, but I would have never expected this show to get that treatment.
  • Comic Urban Legend: Marvel Comics once had a line of female superhero comic books. Answer.

Time to figure out what I plan on doing for dinner… and what to do this evening.

Namaste.
