Friday – 17 April 2009
Another 9/80 “off” Friday has begun. I managed to sleep in until a little after 9:00 this morning. That was nice. After a quick bite to eat, SaraRules and I headed to the gym to get in a workout. Today’s routine included:

  • Leg Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 140 lbs
  • Kick-backs: 3 sets/10 reps, 60 lbs
  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps
    • 2½ sets @ 205 lbs
    • ½ set @ 185 lbs
  • Fly: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Curl w/ Shoulder Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 20 lbs
  • Bent-over Row: 3 sets/10 reps, 35 lbs
  • Tricep Extension (rope): 3 sets/10 reps, 45 lbs

Post-workout weight: 182.5 lbs.

We also ran into Josh, a former coworker, while in the free weight room. That was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.

Next up: Errand-running and miscellaneous stuff.

A few late-afternoon distractions have been discovered:

  • By way of and Not Always Right: May Contain Scenes of Gratuitous Bowie
  • Erfworld
  • From the “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” file: Woman rubs chili pepper seeds in her eyes after setting new world record
I can’t just make her “Human of the Day.” It would be… too much of an understatement.  So, we’ll make her “Hardcore Human of the Day.”  Yeah, that’ll work.
  • Obama eases curbs on Cuba travel
  • Ariana Page Russell: The Human Etch-A-Sketch
  • We are in the midst of a server room upgrade. Along with this, we’re getting some new cabinets for servers. Julie fielded a call this morning from the shipping company to schedule delivery of the cabinets. She set us up for Thursday delivery.  Ten minutes ago, a driver from the company showed up… with the racks in his truck. We couldn’t take delivery for a couple of reasons
    1. The truck had no liftgate.
    2. We have no forklift.
    3. Our building has no loading dock.  (FAIL!)
    4. We weren’t expecting them until… um… Thursday maybe?!

So, Julie sent the driver packing. The cabinets will be delivered… on Thursday, as agreed upon… in a truck with a liftgate.

Thursday – 09 April 2009
It’s overcast, rainy and… cool (not really “cold”) and I find myself thinking: “We left California… and the sun… and the warmth… for this?!” Oh, well.

The drive back was just as long as the drive down, although it was shorter in terms of time, because we didn’t make quite as many stops; we did stop at the In-N-Out in St. George, though. I phased in and out of sleep, many times. (I realized later that was due to a sleeping poorly Tuesday night.) On the whole, the trip was uneventful.

As we were getting stuff out of SaraRules’ parents’ car, it started to sleet. That urged us to hasten our efforts to get things into the house, oddly enough. We said our goodbyes and headed off to pick up the apartment key from . (Thanks again for keeping an eye on things!) Next, a quick stop at Rumbi to get some dinner and then home. We were both beat; we watched last week’s CSI: while we ate. We watched a bit of The Late Show and called it a night.

Stray Toasters

Quote of the Day
Julie, our Property Manager, was asking me how our trip went.  I was recounting it and told her that SaraRules had found her dress… but that I couldn’t tell her anything about it, because I haven’t seen it and won’t see it for six months. That led to the following exchange:

Julie: That’s right, you’ll be getting married on the next Conference weekend.
Me: Oh… yeah… Well, there goes about half of our guest list.
Julie: That’s what TiVo is for!

We both got a good laugh out of it.

And, with that, back to the grind…

Namaste.

Monday – 06 April 2009
Day One of the Sunny Southern California Adventure. Well, I guess this is technically “Day Two,” since we got in last night. *shrug* We’re here to:

  1. …visit SaraRules’ aunt, uncle and cousin
  2. …see her sister and
  3. …to let her get in a bit of dress shopping with her mother, sister, aunt and cousin.

I’m hanging out with her father and uncle (or, as SaraRules calls it: “Listening to them sit around and tell lies…”). We’ve been having a good time while they’re out gallivanting.

Yesterday, SaraRules and I got up, watched an episode of The Brave and the Bold, packed up, ran a couple of errands and then headed to her folks’ place to get on the road. We stopped at the In-N-Out Burger in Vegas. (Tasty burgers and fries, with chocolatey shaked milk!) The trip, while long, was rather uneventful… although, we did encounter many road monkeys. (Uneventful pictures here) When we got L.A., I met the family: Marie, Stan and their daughter Angela.  And then… SLEEP! (It’s amazing how tired just riding in a car can make a person.)

Today has been fairly low-key. We started off with breakfast and a fair bit of catching up, then the ladies were off to hunt for dresses. So far, we (the guys) have gone to Target, Best Buy – where Steve and I introduced Stan to the joys of Mac – and an Italian deli. Amusing side story: Steve and I were talking about the different flavors of Mac (Mini, iMac, Pro and MacBook) and discussing some of the features when a sales associate walked up… whom we effectively ignored. He just stood looking while we talked up the machines and their software to Stan. He silently wandered away at some point, because I turned around again and he was gone.

I’m not sure what’s on tap for the rest of the evening.  I’m good with that, though; that’s what “vacation” is all about.

Monday – 30 March 2009
The new work week began with a new dusting of snow. There was a little slush on the streets, but nothing insurmountable. I came in a little early this morning because I had a “special project” to work on:

Our department has had a running… practical joke… for the past couple months: “An object” will magically appear at someone’s desk (usually in their chair or in a drawer) when they are away from their desk. I wound up with it about a week ago; Sean, one of my employees, tagged me with “the gift.” I promised him that I’d get even. And I waited…

This past Thursday and Friday, Sean was out of the office. He was having surgery…

…and that was when I formulated my revenge. I figured that I could kill two birds with one stone: Payback for getting “the gift” and “welcome back” all in one.

Last night, I went out and picked up the things I’d need. This morning, I came in and set them up. The time and effort were worth the investment for the expression on Sean’s face when he came in this morning. Pictures can be seen here.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. And it is very cold in space…
-Khan Noonian Singh

This morning also brought with it some server troubles. It took a bit to suss out where the problem started, but once we got that figured out, it was just a matter of getting the right people on the task. So far, it looks like things are working the way they’re supposed to.

Stray Toasters

And that’s a wrap.

Sunday – 29 March 2009
Today has been a quiet and slow day… and that’s good.

<< Rewind <<
Yesterday morning, SaraRules and I got up, picked up her mother and headed to South Towne Expo Center for a bridal show. We stood in a short line to get in and, then, it was “Game On.” The show was smaller than I had expected – far smaller, in fact. There were, maybe… 40 exhibitors in all. I think that we were in and out of the show inside of 30 minutes.  However, in that time, I put a deposit on my tuxedo rentals with Men’s Warehouse; they were running a special that I couldn’t pass up: $30 off each rental. Win.

There was a car show at the other end of the Expo Center, so we checked out the cars they had outside the main hall. That was when I also noted the differences in admission to the events:

  • Bridal Show:
    • Brides: Free
    • Other guests: $5.00
  • Auto Show: $14.50

I began to wonder which show would actually make the most money. I’d like to see the final numbers.

After dropping off SaraRules’ mom, we headed to Oh Sushi for lunch. Tasty, tasty sushi… Next: Dr. Volt’s.  From there, we headed to Wheeler Farm for an afternoon walk. The weather was perfect for it – sunny, a light breeze and high clouds. Next, we headed to Best Buy to pick up a copy of Quantum of Solace. Then, back home for a bit…

…and then off to OnlyAly and ‘s for poker. It was a good crowd and I played in some good games. Despite some decent hands, I got outplayed in both of the tourneys. At least it was fun and a good way to spend the evening.

> Play >
As I mentioned, today has been quiet and relaxing.  I got a good night’s sleep last night, following Friday night’s rather poor-quality sleep. We watched an episode of Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?, featuring Baltimore Ravens’ TE Daniel Wilcox. We also caught an episode Top Gear that featured a Ford Fiesta storming a beach along with the Royal Marines AND being chased – through a mall (video) – by a Chevrolet Corvette . (I swear, they get away with more cool stuff on that show…)

Next up: Errand-running.
(Misson: Accomplished)

This evening, I’m not sure what’s on tap. I believe that we’re doing Date Night tonight, as we aren’t having dinner with SaraRules’ family until tomorrow night.

Friday – 20 March 2009
Welcome to the first day of Spring. I think that temps here are supposed to top out around 70ºF. Then, there’s also supposed to drop by Sunday… and I heard something somewhere about a possibility of snow. We’ll see how that goes.

The cable tech showed up around 1430 yesterday. It took him roughly 20 minutes to track down the problems. Yes, plural. The problems were:

  1. A Comcast technician had been out Tuesday, working on a problem for another customer, did a “fix” that did something to adversely affect other customers connected to that junction box.
  2. There was a splitter in one of the connections in the apartment was old and was causing further signal degradation.

He fixed both issues. The whole thing took a little under an hour.

Before heading home, I had coffee with my friend, Frankie. Things seem to be going well for her.

Next, I headed out to ‘s place to hang out with her for a bit.

Today is my “off” Friday. I haven’t really done much, aside from watching a couple of BSG reruns – there’s a marathon on SciFi. Apparently, the series finale is tonight; I guess I’ll have to go back and check out the whole series.

Happy Green Lantern Day!
(Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to the rest of the world.)

After work yesterday, SaraRules and I headed up to Liberty Park for a stroll. (She’s been rather positive in helping me stick to this whole “doing cardio” thing.) We walked the inner loop, which is 1¼ miles, give or take a bit. The weather, mild and comfortable, was quite agreeable. All-in-all, it was a pleasant change of pace.

We got back home and SaraRules decided to try recreating the Pollo Limon Rustica dish that she had the other night at Macaroni Grill. I didn’t have any of the dish then, but last night’s fare was very tasty. After dinner, we watched the new episode of 24. Not too surprisingly, there were a couple of twists… including a one that I didn’t see coming; neither did SaraRules. And it was a pretty good one, in fact. We also watched reruns of The Late Show and The Late Late Show that we taped last week.

This morning, I woke up with The Beach Boys’ Fun Fun Fun running through my head.

Quotes of the Day

  • Quote 1
I posted the following as my status on Facebook:

Happy Green Lantern Day! Wait… What? St. Patrick’s Day? Really?! Well, that’s just silly.

    To which replied:

By your powers combined, I am Captain… no wait. These are the other guys with rings. 🙂

  • Quote 2
Jeff, another coworker, just came over and told a St. Patrick’s Day joke:
  • Why did St. Patrick drive the snakes out of Ireland?

Because Samuel L. Jackson wouldn’t let them on the plane.

It made loonybin88, Tom and me laugh.

Tuesday – 10 March 2009
Last night, after NCIS and 24, I did something that I haven’t done… well, pretty much in a few years: I did a cardio workout. Thirty minutes on a recumbent bike. I’m trying to get back into the habit of doing some cardio. Yay. It wasn’t hellish… until about 20 minutes in, when I hit the control panel and somehow wiped out the data for my session. *grblsnrkx* Fortunately, my watch has a stopwatch feature, so I used it to count down the final 10 minutes. With roughly 40 seconds left in the ride, I did something equally brilliant: Pointed the toes on my right foot. That brought me the exquisite ecstacy agony of a cramp in my right calf. Go me! I limped along for the last few seconds and was quite glad to have the whole ordeal come to an end.

Stray Toasters

  • I think that I’m going to start referring to Tuesday and Thursday as “Meeting Day 1” and “Meeting Day 2,” respectively.
  • Pending confirmation from our venue, it looks like we have a date.
  • I chatted with for a bit last night. Among the other news he shared was the note that Bit is not quite walking by herself, but is “…pulling herself up on things and shimmying.” Or, as he added: “…she’s no longer crawling like G.I. Jane.”
  • Obama to address U.S. education woes in speech
  • I’ve started work on my Sodam Yat/Ion ‘Clix figure. I feel like Dr. Frankenstein.
  • In related news, Jake Theis posted an update about the future of HeroClix.
  • CGSociety’s steampunk art contest winners and Steampunk Fairy Tales CGI
  • Jack Hanna was on The Late Show last night. It was just as amusing as most/all of his other visits to the show. He also had a pair of cheetah… kittens (?)… that were very cute with him. (Of course, they’re only “cute” until they start eyeing you as a potential snack or meal.)
  • Dremel, Dremel, Dremel
I made it out of clay…
  • A handful of people will get that reference.
Two, possibly three, of those people know why I find it so amusing.

Namaste.

Saturday – 07 March 2009
Yesterday, SaraRules and I settled on a venue for the wedding.  Next step is to pick a date.

After that, we picked up Perry (which he knew about) and kidnapped him to go to see Watchmen (which he didn’t know about). We met ,  and shockpuppet, Jana and Jason. I went in expecting to see the new Star Trek trailer… and was disappointed to find that it wasn’t in front of our feature. We did see the latest trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which was good. Watchmen was an excellent adaptation of the graphic novel, in my opinion.  Zach Snyder did a good job of bringing the comic to film… but, I can understand the complaint that it might be a lot for people to take in if they haven’t read the book.

After the movie, SaraRules and I stopped at a hobby shop, where I finally found a few sheets of dry-transfer letters that I used on my Winter Soldier/Captain America ‘Clix.  Speaking of which, I finally got around to taking pictures of both Shado (my first mod) and the new Cap:

Shado (from "Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters") and Captain America - Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier)

More them can be seen here.

Quote of the Day
Today’s quote comes from Rachel and bash.org:

SergioThree: there’s other fish in the sea, man, she’s just a girl
Beatsfromkorea: no dude, that’s bullshit.
Beatsfromkorea: Think of it this way. if your precious copy of street fighter third strike broke and i told you “it’s ok man, there’s other games in the sea. here, play mortal kombat instead” what would you say? you’d be like, “fuck that, gimme third strike.”
SergioThree: …
SergioThree: you just reached me on a level that i never thought possible

And that’s a wrap. We’re off to visit and her family.

Friday – 20 February 2009
Helloooooo, 9/80 Friday.

Last night, after CSI:… and watching Batman sing… SaraRules and I took a stroll over to Red Mango for yogurt; she had a pomegranate/green tea twist; I had green tea. While we ate, we finally watched an episode of Burn Notice that’s been on the DVR for a couple of weeks. Later, when SaraRules headed to bed, I started in on a new corner for my ‘Clix map: Building Cluster. (Pictures to come later)

This morning, I slept in a bit. I still haven’t figured out what I’m doing with the rest of my morning and early afternoon, but later this afternoon will be spent checking out a couple of possible wedding venues.

Stray Toasters

Time to do… something.

Namaste.

Oh yeah, the joke:

A snail goes to a local Nissan dealership and looks at the inventory. A salesman walks up to him and asks “May I help you?”

The snail looks at him and says, “I’m here to buy a car. I’d like to test drive…. that one,” as he points to a brand new Z.

The salesman looks a little surprised. “Oooh-kay.” He walks inside, comes back outside and returns to the snail. He hands him the keys. “Here you go.”

“Thanks!” The snail gets into the car and turns the key. The engine purrs. The snail presses the accelerator and the roars. He drops it into gear and races out of the parking lot.

Ten minutes later, the car whips back into the lot. The snail gets out with a huge grin. “That was great! I’ll take it! But there’s just one thing…”

The salesman shifts a little. “Yes, sir…?”

The snail turns to look at the car and turns back to the salesman: “I want you to take off the “Z”.”

“But, sir… that’s… that’s….”

“That’s my condition. I’ll pay for it right now and drive the car off the lot, but the “Z” has to go. I want you to put an “S” on it, instead.”

The salesman looks a little uneasy. “Let me… see what I can do.” He heads inside of the dealership. He returns a few minutes later. “Okay, it looks like we can take care of that for you. It will take about twenty minutes.”

The snail smiles widely and says,”That’s no problem.”

The two go inside as a mechanic exits the building and drives the car into the auto shop. They fill out the paperwork and shortly afterwards, the snail and his new car are tearing out of the parking lot.

Another salesman comes over to the first one and asks,”So… what was that all about? The deal with taking the car into the shop and whatnot?”

“Oh, he wanted the “Z” removed from the car… and an “S” put on in its place.”

“Huh?! That’s weird.”

“Yeah, but look at that little “S” car go!”

“A working class hero is something to be…”

Thursday – 19 February 2009
Another Thursday/Friday begins. I’ve already been informed that if I would like to day to remain an NBN Thursday, that I should avoid the boss two rungs up the ladder – his day was already shot… two hours ago. On the plus side, I figured out “Hurdle One” with a PHP/SQL program I’m working on, now I get to add features onto it.

Last night was a lazy night in: NCIS (from Tuesday night) and reading of yesterday’s comics haul. Of the books that I read, the standouts were:

  • Action Comics #874
  • Batman #686: “What Ever Happened to the Caped Crusader?”
  • Black Lightning: Year One #4
  • Green Lantern Corps #33
  • Supergirl #38
  • Tiny Titans #13

Additionally, my copy of Teenagers from the Future: Essays on the Legion of Super-Heroes came in yesterday.  I’m looking forward to reading it.

Other than that, it’s another fun-filled, action-packed day in paradise…

Tuesday – 17 February 2009

After work yesterday, I came home to find a new addition to the decor: SaraRules had gone to the Garden of Sweden and picked up two BESTA wall shelves for our DVDs. She set them under the bar between the dining room and kitchen; they look quite good there. I also discovered that she’d hung a new set of sheer curtains in the bedroom, too.  Also, a nice touch.

There were flurries when I left home this morning, but it’s clear now… “for now,” rather. We’ll see what the rest of the day brings.

Monday – 02 February 2009
Another new work week hits the ground running. I started the day with a training session for my team. I had planned for it to be roughly one hour long. It was close to two, because I had someone sitting in on it who provided some additional information. All-in-all, it went well, though.

Yesterday’s Super Bowl was a good game. It was the kind of game that I enjoy watching… as long as I’m not really rooting for either team involved. The Cardinals put up a good fight, but at the final whistle, the Steelers went home with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Congrats to the Steelers on their sixth Super Bowl win and also to their coach, Mike Tomlin, for being the youngest coach to go to – and win – the Super Bowl.

After we got home, SaraRules and I finished watching The Big Sleep. And, thanks to that, I finally added something to my NetFlix queue: The four Spenser: For Hire movies, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks.

Friday – 30 January 2009
It’s quiet in the office today. Most of the people in our office recently started a 9/80 schedule – we work 80 hours in 9 days and get every other Friday off – and this is most of the office’s “off” Friday. The IT team has been split in two and my team works the odd Friday and will have next Friday off. I think that there are… six (6) of us in the building, so far.  (Must refrain from playing City of Heroes all day…)

Last night, SaraRules and I had dinner with our friend Murphy. Not Eddie. Not Peter. Papa. As in “Take and bake pizza.” It was good. After dinner (and a couple of episodes of NCIS and CSI:), we went to the gym:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 185 lbs
  • Reverse Fly: 3 sets/10 reps – 1 set @ 70 lbs, 2 sets @ 80 lbs
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/15 reps, 140 lbs
  • Pull-downs: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Rows: 3 sets/12 reps, 125 lbs
  • Dips: 3 sets/10 reps

It was a short, but good, workout.

Post-workout weight: 186.0.
SaraRules suggested that I might think about cutting back on crack ginger snaps.  I suggested that she might be wrong in that… and that I could stop any time I wanted.  If I wanted to, that is.
