Sunday: Coda
Today has been a good birthday.
More than that, it’s just been an all-around good day.

SaraRules and I took the Metro downtown to see the Raiders vs. the Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

at

We had great seats: lower level, 15th row, in one of the corners. It was on the visitor’s side, but there were PLENTY of purple (and black and white… and even a few red) jerseys in the stadium our area. On my right, was a couple (a man and his wife) of Raiders fans, so SaraRules wasn’t all alone in a sea of Ravens fans. The game was good. And it was a lot of fun. It was also SaraRules’ first live football game. Ever.

  • High school?  Nope.
  • College? Nuh-uh.
  • NFL?  Not until today.

The Ravens came out of the gate with their game faces on. And they went to work… although, they did manage to have a little fun, as evidenced by this play. Both teams played well, but the Oakland offense didn’t really come alive until the second half of the game.

Final score: Oakland 10 – Baltimore 29

I took pictures at the game. (Big surprise there…)

After the game, we stepped into Geppi’s Entertainment Museum for a quick walkthrough. It was neat – there were manners of pop-culture memorabilia, past and present. In retrospect, I could/should have taken more pictures… but the ones I took can be seen here.

Next, we went to Harborplace. We ate dinner at Phillip’s Restaurant. (I know… who could have guessed?!) I had broiled crab cakes and calamari; SaraRules had a seafood combination dinner that included shrimp, a crab cake, mahi mahi and a couple of other items. Before leaving Harborplace, we picked up a chocolate mousse cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory.

Back home. Tammy (my Godsister) and her youngest daughter, Kayla, came by to visit for a bit. That was nice, as I haven’t seen Tammy in… I’d say a year to a year-and-a-half. I tried catching up with Bret, but our schedules just didn’t synch up. Oh, well… maybe next time. After Tammy left, SaraRules and I hung out with my ‘rents. We showed them some of our travel pictures while we all had cheesecake.

Thanks to all of the good tidings and well-wishes for my birthday. I am very fortunate and blessed in my collection of friends.

Tomorrow: The Return to the Land Behind the Zion Curtain.

Namaste.

Saturday – 25 October 2008
We made it to the Right Coast.

The alarm went off early. Very early. We got up and got ready to go. SaraRules’ parents picked us up and carried us to the airport this morning.

SLC to DEN to DCA

The SLC-DEN leg of the trip wasn’t bad. The weather from DEN-DCA wasn’t too bad… until we got a little outside of Washington, D.C. Then it got choppy. We circled west of D.C. for abotu a half-hour. Then, we headed south. Then, and this was classic: The pilot said, “We’re going to take a shot at the approach.”

Wait.
What?!
“Take a shot?!”

No.  Do or do not, there is no “Take a shot.”

And he did.
And we landed.

It took a long time – at least twenty minutes – for our luggage to get unloaded and sent to baggage claim. I started wondering if we had a zombie in our cargo hold that had attacked a baggage handler… who infected the rest of the crew… and so on and so on.

No such luck. They were just slow.

My dad picked us up and brought us home.

And that’s pretty much that.

Namaste.

At the end of the day, when all is said and done…

Friday: Coda
I after work I met SaraRules at her place. I hung out with her and her folks for a bit…

…then I ran to Dr. Volt’s – I had neglected to get a couple of receipts for the Arkham Asylum “Buy It by the Brick” figure on Wednesday. And I picked up another brick. *shrug* It’s my birthday weekend; I’m allowed.

Back to SaraRules’ to pick her up and run a couple of errands before heading back to my place to do some cleaning.

At 7:30 we and a few friends, headed to the Outback Steakhouse for my birthday dinner. It was a good-sized group,  18 people in all. (A hearty and heart-felt “Thank you” to those of you who came out to help me celebrate!)  After dinner, most of us came back to my place for cake – yellow cake with chocolate frosting with chocolate chips, made by Ms. SaraRules – and ice cream. It was a great way to spend the evening. SaraRules surprised me with an awesome present:

Mm-hmm, that’s right: A Ravens reversible jacket. As she put it: She “…wanted [me] to have something fun and cool to wear to the game.” I have a very cool girlfriend… even if she is a Raiders fan. Can I get an “Amen,” from the Amen Corner?

After company left, we finished packing for tomorrow’s trip to Charm City. This time tomorrow, we’ll be on the Right Coast… and, most likely, very much asleep.

I should probably wrap it up here. 6:30’s going to come around awfully early, I suspect.

Namaste.

Friday – 24 October 2008
Last night, I headed up to SaraRules’ for dinner and date night. Dinner was a damned fine meat loaf, with mashed potatoes, and carrots (with a little bit of brown sugar), all prepared by Ms. SaraRules. After dinner, we – including her family – watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I’d still have to say that it’s my third-favorite Indiana Jones movie, but it was fun. Towards the end of the movie, I was wondering how well other pulp fiction-type heroes would fare in the modern cinema. I remember that there was a rumor of a Doc Savage movie in the works a few years ago, but I haven’t read/heard anything about it in some time.

However, this morning, I found the following item on Slashdot: Google Founders Buy Fighter Jet. That’s close enough for me.

Monday – 20 October 2008
Sunday turned out even better than expected, in terms of football:

  • The Ravens won…
  • …although, that means that the Dolphins lost
  • The Panthers beat the Saints
  • The Raiders won… barely… which was good news for SaraRules (more on this below)
  • The Browns lost.  (Sorry, )
  • The Bengals lost to the Steelers. (Sorry, and )

I was shocked – and pleasantly surprised – at the Ravens’ win, especially when you consider how well the Dolphins have looked over the past couple of weeks. But, like I said: It was a win-win situation… I’m just a little more glad that the Ravens won.

Next weekend, SaraRules and I are heading to Baltimore for my birthday. This year’s present to myself is the Raiders vs. Ravens game. We’re both looking forward to the game and we’re looking forward to some (relatively) good-natured ribbing over it. While we were out-and-about today, SaraRules told me that I should hope that the Raiders win. I raised an eyebrow over this. She went on to explain:

“If the Raiders win, you’ll have to hear about it for about a day… maybe two. If the Ravens win, I’m going to have to hear about it for the next 50 years: ‘Do you remember that time we went to Baltimore for that football game…?’

I can’t say that she isn’t right about that, either.

We had dinner and watched the late games at her parents’ place. Dinner was enchiladas (chicken and seafood, respectively) with sides of rice, beans, guacamole and mojitos. For dessert, we took a couple of pies: Chocolate Satin and apple. As to the late game, I don’t know what got into the Bucs, but they played a great game; on the flip side, I don’t know who that was in the Seahawks’ uniforms, but it wasn’t their “A” squad.

Friday – 05 September 2008
Holy balls, it’s early.
Really early. (I’ve been up since about 5:15 AM.)
I-don’t-even-get-up-for-work-this-early early.

We’re about five to ten minutes from getting on the road to Idaho for camping.

That’s right, I said “camping.”
In the woods.
Me.
(I’ll give you a few moments to stop laughing hysterically.)

::: The Girl from Ipanema plays softly in the background :::

Better? Good.
Yep. Camping.
With SaraRules and her family.
It should be fun.

God willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we should be back sometime Sunday.
Too late to see the Ravens play, but in time for the evening game, I think.

And with that… up out.

Don’t burn the place down while I’m gone.

Namaste.

And, now, back to your regularly-scheduled programming, already in progress.

23 August 2008
And the whirlwind is over, it seems.

is in Las Vegas.
SaraRules is back in SLC.
He and she are in the house
But there’s only me at home.

After I wrapped up the workday on Thursday, and I hit the road for Cedar City. SaraRules preceded us by a few hours, as she had to do her Capstone defense (which, I heard from the other MFAs, was amazing). Once we got in and took our things to the hotel, and I headed to Applebee’s to get a bite to eat; SaraRules was supposed to bring Lish with her… but he punked on us. The three of us sat and talked and hung out for a while.

Friday morning, SaraRules got up and did her “exit interviews” with the Dean and other faculty members. I slept in. Apparently, wasn’t able to sleep in. After I woke up and got ready, he and I headed to Cafe Orleans for lunch: I had the Shrimp Etouffe, he had a Shrimp PoBoy.

After polishing off lunch, I took up to Cedar Breaks. It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one for whom the phrase “sphincter pucker factor” comes into play when driving/riding on high-altitude roads without guardrails. We made the journey up to Cedar Breaks and took a few pictures at a couple of the overlooks. (To be posted later) I also took him along the Alpine Pond Trail that SaraRules and I hiked last year. He seemed to enjoy it. Once we got back into town, we met SaraRules at the local Dairy Queen. We needed our ice cream fixes. We also took in a bit of people-watching. Chalk it up as an afternoon full of “Win.”

After a little down time, SaraRules and I headed over to SUU to meet the other MFAs for dinner and a show. Dinner was at Costa Vida; the show was Fiddler on the Roof, which I had never seen… although I know three or four songs from the production. Go figure. I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun production. The pre-play plan was that Lish and Steve would come back to the hotel with us and have drinks. The reality was that everyone decided that they were pretty tired – and the MFAs were going on a hike this morning – so drinks fell by the wayside. Again. Oh, well.

This morning, the alarm went off far too early. 6:00 AM. I managed to hang in bed until almost 6:30, though. SaraRules and I got up, ready and were on our way. I headed over to the grad house, to say goodbye to Lish and the others before I headed north. I was pleased – and a bit shocked – to note that gas was cheaper in Cedar City than in Salt Lake City. I made decent time back to SLC. I came home to find that there had been a power outage in my absence. This was a “good thing,” as I realized Thursday evening that I had neglected to turn off my alarm clock. Whoops.

I shaved (including adding a new cut that required a Marcellus Wallace-like bandage) and headed out to meet and her teammate, JillDozer, for breakfast. I managed to catch , , and OnlyAly and invite them along, as well. We met a couple other skaters, only one of whose names (Movin Violation, from Salt City Derby Girls) remains with me.

When we broke from breakfast, I headed to Far West Comics. Today was their first anniversary and they had Lou Ferrigno there as a special guest. I told Matt and Nano that I’d be available to help out, if they needed an extra body around; I wound up manning the cash register. There were a LOT of people there; I’d say somewhere between 200 and 300 showed up, including ‘ sister and her family. Mr. Ferrigno seemed to be a nice enough guy. He took pictures with the patrons and signed autographs. Three hours later, he packed up and was on his way… to wherever it is that Lou Ferrigno goes. But, before he left, we (the guys working the event) were able to get a few pictures with him, too. (Also to be posted later)

Home.
Shower.
Back out again – I had to put a couple of eBay items in the mail.

Back home.
And, in a few minutes, I’m heading out again: SaraRules and I are meeting and some of the skaters for dinner.

*whew*

Namaste.

Thursday – 21 August 2008
The end of the work week is nigh. Selah.

arrived last night around 5:30 PM. He came in and gave us (SaraRules and me) a quick recap of his trip, thus far. Then, it was time for food! The three of us and went to Poplar Street Pub for dinner.

Post-dinner, SaraRules, and I headed home. He and I watched some of the Olympics, while SaraRules worked on her Capstone presentation. I watched Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh win their second consecutive gold medal in Women’s Beach Volleyball against Tian Jia and Wang Jie. In the rain. In two sets. It was an amazing match to watch. Next, we watched South Park. I haven’t watched the show in… at least five years. It was amusing, but I’m not sure that I feel compelled to tune in next week.

This morning, the alarm went off at its appointed time… but I wasn’t ready to let go of the pillow. So, I didn’t. I waited until about 7:20 before either SaraRules and I were ready to greet the day. We got ready, while slept in. She got on her way to Cedar City; I headed to work. As today is my “Friday,” and I are heading to southern Utah to hang out with SaraRules and the other MFAs for a couple of days.

And on to more server surveys!

Politics and Gunmen: A day with Condoleeza Rice and Doc Holliday

Saturday: Coda
An Evening of Words and Music: Condoleeza Rice turned out to be a very nice affair. It was a joint venture between the Aspen Music Festival and School and The Aspen Institute. Dr. Rice and her interviewer, Walter Isaacson, were introduced by former Secretary of State Madeline Albright.

Dr. Albright pointed out a very interesting item: Her father, Josef Korbel, was not only one of the professors under whom Dr. Rice studied while at the University of Denver, he was also her mentor on her doctoral thesis. Despite differences in political ideologies, Dr. Albright referred to Dr. Rice as “my sister.” Anecdotally, Dr. Albright recounted how she had called upon Dr. Rice to be a potential advisor to then-Democratic presidential nominee, Michael Dukakis. Dr Rice then informed her,”…but I’m a Republican now.” A shocked Dr. Albright retorted with: “How could you be..?! We had the same father!” It was a kind, warm – and surprisingly witty – introduction.

Dr. Rice and Mr. Isaacson took the stage and proceeded to talk for the next 30 – 40 minutes. I had worried that the discussion might turn into a pulpit from which Dr. Rice might try to quietly (or even not-so-quietly) talk up the current administration’s policies. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could not have been more off-base. Yes, the discussion focused mostly on political matters, but I found Dr. Rice to be fairly candid and willing to discuss the topics and issues – not the party politics. This was also true when the discussion turned from interviewer/interviewee to an open mike Q&A session. The first question she fielded was from a gentleman from Bangladesh who attempted to call her on the carpet about the U.S.’ energy policies, with regard to the Kyoto Protocols. Dr. Rice gently corrected a couple of misunderstood points and then elaborated on the United States’ position… and also why India and China, which the man had cited as being on board with the terms of the protocols, were not being held to the same standards. On another occasion, a topic was brought up by Mr. Isaacson; Dr. Rice started to answer the question… and then paused to elaborate on exactly what it was to which they were referring.  When the Q&A was over, Dr. Rice left the stage to a standing ovation.

After an intermission, during which time the interview area was broken down and music stands and a piano were brought out, the Sybarite Chamber Players took the stage. They were a string quintet who performed two modern pieces:

  1. The Rebel, by Piotr Szewczyh
  2. Black Bend, by Dan Visconti

The pieces were brief but highlighted the performers abilities nicely.

A small set change later, Dr. Rice – an alumna of the Apsen Music School – took the stage again, with a string quartet comprised of: Lydia Bunn (viola), Ken Hamao (violin), Aleisha Verner (cello) and Eric Wong (violin). The quintet then performed pieces by Johannes Brahms, Dr. Rice’s favorite composer, and Antonin Dvorak:

  • Piano Quintet in F minor, op. 34 (1862), by Brahms
  • Piano Quintet in A major, B. 155 op. 81 (1887), by Dvorak

Dr. Rice is an adept pianist. She noted during the interview that she changed her major from Music (Piano) to International Relations after returning from the Aspen Music School, saying that she had observed eleven- and twelve-year-olds performing pieces that they had spent hours (or a couple of days) learning, whereas it took her weeks to master the piece(s) she was attempting to play. The string players were also very accomplished with their respective instruments. After they were finished performing, the crowd responded with another standing ovation.

We returned to SaraRules’ condo to change clothes and to get a quick bite to eat. Then, we headed into Glenwood Springs. Our objective was to visit the grave of John Henry Holliday, best known to many as Doc Holliday. What we didn’t know was that the graveyard was at the end of a half-mile uphill hike. We estimate that the elevation changed at least three-hundred (300) feet in that half-mile. (Google Maps seems to bear this out.) But, the three of us made the trek and explored the graveyard until we found the grave… sort of: There is a memorial marker in the graveyard (pictures). As explained here, the cemetary changed ownership in 1939 and some of the cemetary records – including where Doc Holliday was buried – were lost.

We trekked back down the mountain and back into town for dinner at The Bayou, a cajun restaurant that SaraRules had discovered and then we headed back to Snowmass Village.

All-in-all, it was a fun, adventure-filled day.

Saturday – 02 August 2008
Last night, SaraRules, her mother and I headed into Aspen and saw the Aspen Chamber Symphony – conducted by David Zinman and featuring Andreas Haefliger on piano – perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, op. 15 (1854-59) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, op. 55, ‘Eroica’ (1803). We had tickets to sit inside the Benedict Music Tent, but opted to sit out on the lawn and make a picnic of it. The entire experience was quite fun.

We came back home and hung out for a while before, SaraRules’ mom called it an evening. At that point, SaraRules and I decided to watch Reign Over Me, starring Don Cheadle and Adam Sandler. I’m not the biggest Adam Sandler fan, but I think that he did an excellent job in this roll.

Today has been lazy, but we’re about to head back into Aspen to hear An Evening of Words and Music with Condoleeza Rice. Yes, that Condoleeza Rice.

And after that… we’re off to visit Doc Holliday’s grave site.

Happy Independence Day

Yesterday, I got off work a little after noon. I headed to Oh Sushi! to see if the lunchtime group was still there. They were. And, they were getting ready to leave. I picked up an order of Ebi and a California Roll to go.

I stopped at SaraRules’ parents’ house to see if Meliko was there; she had gotten into town Wednesday evening. She was. We hung out and talked books, movies and comics until her folks got in. I hung out with the family for a bit and then headed home.

I dropped off a few things, picked up my Pivot Driver and headed to ‘s to help with the assembly of Vikki’s bed. That went fairly quickly. I also helped troubleshoot a problem that was having with her email. And, as an added bonus: I played with the kids for a bit; I didn’t get any new pictures, though.

Next stop, Borders for a rare Thursday night Clitorati. , , OnlyAly and showed up to hang out. The people-watching was pretty choice, too. When we’d had our fill of the people there, we headed to Applebee’s to get something to eat. Land met up with us a little later.

I got a couple of text messages from SaraRules as we were finishing up dinner. She mentioned that she was having a quiet relaxing evening. I figured that she was due, given all of the running around that she’s been doing for her internship. About thirty minutes after the last message, she called. I figured that it was just our usual pre-bed, “How was your day?” call. Nope. She was calling to find out when I would be home.

*blink blink*
What?

I basically said that I should be home soon… to which she replied that she would just go to bed then and see me later.

*blink blink*
WHAT?!

And that’s when I finally managed to find two brain cells to rub together to come up with “a clue” – She had come to town a day early. My “goodbyes” and “good nights” to the dinner crew were quick. And I may have set a new personal land speed record in getting home.

Best pre-Fourth of July surprise ever.

All was fine until this morning at 8:00, when the Leash started going off about a problem in the office. I gave it a couple of minutes, to see if it would correct itself. It didn’t. I logged into the system to see what I could suss out at a glance. Problems. Yay. I called to see if he knew what was up. He didn’t, at the time, but he surmised the problem – and the solution – rather quickly. And neither of us had to actually go into the office to take care of it. Selah.

SaraRules and I ran out this morning to run a few errands and to pick up some breakfast. She is working on an article for the AMFS and I’m going to squeeze in a little time playing Ultimate Alliance, until she finishes. Then, I believe that we’re spending the afternoon and evening hanging out with her folks. Not a bad way to spend the holiday.

Friday – 20 June 2008
The end of the work week is at hand. Thanks to putting in a few extra hours, I’m done and gone at 1:30 today. That’s worth skipping lunch for. I’m going to run a few errands and enjoy the early start to the weekend.

Last night, I watched Fear Itself, the new anthology horror/suspense summer series on NBC. Thirteen episodes, each done by different directors. Last night’s episode was “The Family Man.”

Family Man – A likeable family man switches bodies with a serial killer during a near-death experience. Now he must keep his loved ones from being added to the long list of the killer’s victims.

It wasn’t bad; it reminded me of a modern Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits. I’m going to have to investigate the previous three episodes.

I also listened to the new Duffy CD, Rockferry. You may remember that I posted the video to Mercy a few weeks back:

The whole CD is good. It has a definite British soul feel, with a number of songs making nods to the 60s style of Brit soul/pop. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

Quote of the Day

From this morning’s conversation with
He was telling me about an email that he sent to Bot and a couple of his brothers:

I had to go through multiple roadblocks, burning tires, and brick throwers to get to the airport this morning. Today’s asshole Kathmandu protest is brought to you by students, who are demanding that fuel prices come down. Took us 90 minutes to get to the airport.

At one intersection, the driver just hit the gas and drive around the tire. A dude threw a brick at us (missed by a mile) and called me “a mother beetches son.” Best insult EVER.

Anyway, I’m here, I’m in the Thai Airways lounge, and all is well. See you soon…

Then he added:

I almost went with the sesame street theme and said “today’s asshole kathmandu protest is brought to you by the letters AMF” but i think only andrew would’ve understood it

…where “AMF” stands for “Adios, motherfucker.”

I think that he should have added it.

And that’s a wrap.

Sunday: Coda
Back in the USSR Land Behind the Zion Curtain. I made it back in a little over six hours, including two stops. That’s not bad, considering that I was only a few (usually 3 -5) miles over the posted limit. I saw a prairie dog, just inside the Utah state line. I also saw one on the way to Colorado, but forgot about it until I saw the one this afternoon.

Jiggety-jig.
