Some of my recent forays into The Dreaming have been odd. This morning, my subconscious apparently found a rather twisted path along the wildways in a dark area of The Dreaming… and skipped merrily along its way. Thus, I’ve been awake (for the most part) since 5:30 this morning, thanks to a lovely dream about my apartment being broken into. It was “a little” disturbing. After proving to myself that it was just a dream – but being too keyed up to sleep – I wound up sprawled on the couch watching SportsCenter. I apparently dialed down enough to nod off somewhere around 6:10. Just in time for the alarm to go off at 6:20. Yay.

Last night was very uneventful. I played my guitar for the first time in weeks. Adam called while I was cooking dinner – baked chicken over spaghetti, with a side of spinach; he had picked up The Invincible Iron Man animated movie that came out last year and had a couple of questions about it and how it related to the mainstream Iron Man. That led to questions about Watchmen – he’d seen the trailer and wanted to know if it was based on a comic. I told him that it was and that he should check it out. He then suggested the new Fox series, Fringe, to me. The show happened to be just starting as I finished cooking, so I watched it. It was good, but it may take a week or two to fully grow on me.

I also read two-and-a-half TPBs of Gotham Central (1, 2, 3). I had read the first and second ones before, but it has been a few months; I’d forgotten their storylines. I like what I’ve read of the third book, which I will probably finish tonight.

Guess who’s having Eggo LEGO waffles for breakfast.
Mm-hmm, that’s right.
I am.

Last night’s tourney was a wash: Only Chris and I showed. So, Keith basically rolled the dice: I “won,” Chris got Fellowship. The prizes were a Johnny Storm LE ‘Clix. With the “formalities” over, Chris, Keith, Nano and I played a four-way free-for-all. Since it was a just a fun game to kill some time, I tried a random team:

Chris rolled with his usual Batman team, with a special guest star:

Nano played with:

Keith brought the Fantastic Four (starter set), including the Sue Storm and Johnny Storm LE figures. I have two things to say about this team:

  1. Watching someone play the FF as a team – and play them well – is a thing of beauty.
  2. Getting beat down by that same someone/team is a bittersweet pill… though still fun.

I think that my dice thought that we were playing a game of “Suicide ‘Clix,” because I couldn’t hit my target numbers half the time. I wore down a couple members of the FF, but Keith wound up taking me out. Chris and Nano duked it out on the far side of the board, with Chris winning that fight. Then it came down to Chris and Keith. They danced around the playing field a bit, but Keith finally wound up taking Chris out.

After the game, I headed over to SaraRules’ to hang out with her and her family and watch Monday Night Football. (Four shots at a two-point conversion – FOUR – and you THROW it?! ALL FOUR TIMES?!?) Her parents just returned from a ten-day Oregon excursion and it sounded like they had a lot of fun. And, as an unexpected bonus, they brought back some smoked Brie.

Back home. Chilled on the couch… started nodding off on the couch… called it a night. However, before I hit the rack, I watched a little of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. One of his guests was Marianne Jean-Baptiste, from Without a Trace. I don’t think that I’d ever heard her speak out of character, so I was “a little” surprised to hear a British accent.

This morning, I saw SaraRules drive by as she headed to work.
In a rare occurrence, she apparently saw me – and Jeff, a coworker with whom I was talkin – as well.

  • A new trailer for Quantum is Solace is out.
  • SaraRules pointed out a video that I neglected to check out from yesterday’s Muppet ‘Toaster:

Watch it all the way to the end…

  • Some 640,000 Texans still without power
  • Did Howard Mackie and John Byrne plan on pulling a “One More Day/Brand New Day” kind of stunt in the 90s? You bet they did. Details here.
  • 15 train robbers killed by poison gas
  • MarknTyme: You’ll have to check this out when you get home: Habenera

And that’s that… for now.

Namaste.

Friday – 12 Sep 2008
Last night, SaraRules came over and fixed dinner (fajitas!) and we watched The West Wing and 21. Nice, quiet evening in. After SaraRules left, I hopped on the nerd and surfed for a while. Then – in a stroke of genius – I decided to stretch out on the couch “for a few minutes.”

That turned into 3 hours.

I woke up and dragged myself to bed. That’s when the odd, 21-inspired dreams set in. Thugs, money and lots of running. Whoop-de-damn-doo.

So far, the work day hasn’t been too bad.
And, it’s Friday. A short Friday, to boot.
Win-Win.

Happy Birthday to Sib-4, !

This morning, like most mornings, I shaved. The difference being that today was the first time that I’d shaved since Friday morning. I think that was the longest I have gone without shaving my head since I started shaving it… over ten years ago. Madness.

SaraRules waved to me on her way to work this morning; it made her easy to pick out of the rush hour crowd.

Sunday – 07 Sep 2008
And we’re back from the Great Idaho Expedition of 2008. We got in a little after 8:00 PM Sunday evening. It was a fun trip, but I have to admit that I’m glad to be back in the Land Behind the Zion Curtain, for reasons including (but not limited to):

  • Heat
  • Soap
  • Indoor Plumbing

…though not necessarily in that order.

Pictures of the trip can be found here:

Be warned: I took over 500 pictures over the course of the past three days.
To make things a bit more manageable, some of the highlights’ pictures are noted in the text of the post.

As I noted Friday, we got under way rather early. I discovered this afternoon roughly where I knocked out on the way up to Stanley and Redfish Lake – about 45 miles outside of Pocatello, ID. To be honest, I’m kind of impressed that I made it that far before conducting the first intensive inner-eyelid study of the trip. We stopped in Pocatello to have breakfast. We ate at Perkins; I haven’t eaten in a Perkins in… a few years. After that, it was on to Blackfoot. We stopped there to take on a few supplies and gasoline and then we were on the road again.

We stopped a little south of Arco, ID to check out EBR-1, the world’s first electricity-generating nuclear power plant. (Pictures start at IMG_0004) They also had a couple of experimental atomic/nuclear engines on display. SaraRules and her father noted that there were radiation monitor tags on the engines, which apparently hadn’t been there the last time they stopped (a few years ago).

On through Arco and Moore and into Challis. There we took on “spudnuts,” doughnuts made with a potato flour, and gasoline. On to Stanley. We drove along the Salmon River (IMG_0074), through a couple of small… um… towns(?), I guess. After 40 minutes, or so, we made it to Stanley, which has a great view of the Sawtooth Mountains (IMG_0087).

We went on in to Redfish Lake, found our campground and set up the tents. (IMG_0104) After camp had been established, we headed back up to Sunbeam Village and the Yankee Fork River (IMG_0130), to check out SaraRules’ grandmother’s old cabin. While up there, we headed a little farther into the canyon and looked at the Yankee Fork Gold Dredge. (IMG_0133) That thing was massive… and was run by a three-man crew. We went another couple of miles into the canyon to check out the Custer mining town/settlement; SaraRules used to work here, as a girl, during the summers. (IMG_0195) The pictures starting around IMG_0220 are piles left from the Yankee Fork Dredge.

Back out of the canyon and back to Stanley. We had collected firewood while in Sunbeam Village, so I started building the campfire. A few minutes later, I lit the match and there was fire. (All of those years living in rural NC taught me something, you know…) And thank God, the angels and the heavens above for the fire because it was cold. Very cold, indeed. We cooked and ate dinner (chicken and vegetables) beneath the stars. LOTS of stars. While we ate, a doe walked past the campsite, no more than ten yards away. (IMG_0231) After dinner, we watched for satellites; we saw three or four of them before SaraRules and I sacked out for the night.

Bonne and Logan (SaraRules’ mother and brother) showed up sometime around midnight. I was only vaguely aware of this as I was “ever so slightly” preoccupied with sleeping.

If I had been cold Friday night, it was nothing to having to drag myself out of the sleeping bag Saturday morning to head to the bathroom. I literally held out as long as I could. When I got tired of feeling my eyeballs floating, I braved the cold. By the time I got back, SaraRules was getting ready to make the trek herself. I piled back into the tent and sleeping bag, were it was at least nominally warm. Someone started the morning fire – and coffee – while I was trying to decide if it was worth getting up again.

After breakfast, we got dressed and headed out so that SaraRules, Logan and Steve could get to the river and start fishing. The first attempt was at O’Brien (Day 2: IMG_0235). The bridge to the fishing site was closed, not just to vehicles, but to ALL users (IMG_0261 through 0275). Did that stop our intrepid fishers? What do you think? (Hint: No, it didn’t.) No one caught anything, so we moved on to the next spot, back up the Yankee Fork. While the fisher-folk hit the river, Bonne and I headed up to Bonanza City, another mining city. All that’s really left are the remnants of a few buildings and a couple of cemetaries. (IMG_0280)

When we left the Yankee Fork, SaraRules was ready to head back to the lake to do some swimming. Bonne thought this sounded like a good idea, as well… although Logan wanted to do some more fishing. The compromise: He would take one of the cars and go fishing while the rest of us hung out around the lake. Win-Win. SaraRules and Bonne took to the water, while Steve and I waded in a little ways and then decided that we were fine hanging out on the shore (starting at IMG_0341). We occupied a spot of beach between two weddings. Steve and I noticed a couple of guests for one wedding walking along the beach. The most noticeable thing about one of them was her dress… or apparent lack thereof. (IMG_0375) It looked like “The Dress That Wasn’t There.” But, to each his or her own, I guess.

Post-swimming, SaraRules, Steve and I walked over to the Redfish Lake Lodge and General Store. Redfish Lake experienced a microburst on 02 July 2008. It felled A LOT of trees. (starting with IMG_0382) Along the path, we crossed a bridge over an inlet to Redfish Lake. In the water near the bridge, we saw a trio of sockeye salmon, the “redfish” behind the name “Redfish Lake.” (IMG_0389) Continuing on, we passed a pavilion where the reception for one of the weddings was being held. We saw “The Dress” again – upon closer inspection, it seemed as though it had a “nude” underdress under the mesh piece. *shrug* We made it to the lodge (IMG_0393), the store and the marina. Back to the campsite for dinner (Bratwurst) and s’mores. Saturday evening was significantly warmer than Friday. Sure, long-sleeves were still in order, but it wasn’t necessarily a “huddle by the fire or die” kind of night. We watched for satellites again; I counted five before calling it a night.

Sunday morning was warm enough that the morning trip to the restroom didn’t feel like a trek across the frozen tundra. After breakfast we broke camp and headed out for a little more fishing before returning to Utah. We stopped at the Sunbeam Dam. (starting at Day 3: IMG_0414) We walked around and saw where the Yankee Fork River meets the Salmon River. (starting at IMG_0446) Back up the Yankee Fork for more fishing – Steve decided to sit out this round. (starting at IMG_0471) There was a Steller’s Jay in a tree near where we stopped. I managed to get “a few” pictures of it (IMG_0470, 0473 through 0475). I also started playing with different settings on my camera, so there are a lot of rather random pictures, starting around IMG_0492.

After everyone was all fished out, we headed down the road for a picnic before setting our sights on Utah. While eating, we met a family who had visited one of the hot springs on the area. We ate, we cleaned up, we got back on our way.

We stopped in Arco, ID (starting at IMG_0509) so that I could get some pictures of Arco Number Hill and the memorial of the USS Hawkbill (SSN-666), including its conning tower and an old torpedo casing. We stopped again, just before reaching EBR-1… and then… home again.

I don’t think that I’ve ever been so happy to take a shower as I was tonight.

Tomorrow starts the work-a-day week all over again.
But, for now, I’ll just be happy to sleep in a bed.

Namaste.

Tuesday – 02 September 2008
And so, another – thankfully short – work week begins. I’m going camping with SaraRules and her family this Friday. That should prove… interesting. And undoubtedly fun.

Yesterday was a low-key day, as a holiday should be:

  • Sleeping in.
  • A couple of episodes of The West Wing.
  • Tooling around town, including a stop at Gardner Village.
  • Dinner with SaraRules’ family.
  • City of Heroes.
  • The Middleman season finale.

All-in-all, it was a good day.

Stray Toasters

  • Congrats to SaraRules on starting her new job!

  • We have a new guy starting in IT today. Selah.
  • Sunday’s trip to IKEA bore some fruit… including some geeky fruit. I picked up a KUBBO light. I got a green globe to go on it. Why? Because then, I could do this:

    …and this…

  • I was surprised to read news items about Governor Palin’s daughter in the news.
I was even more surprised – pleasantly so – to hear Senator Obama’s reaction:

“Let me be as clear as possible,” Obama said. “I think people’s families are off-limits, and people’s children are especially off-limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president.” (Full story, from CNN)

I was similarly impressed with the way that he reminded the media that he was born to a young mother and that reporters should “…back off these kinds of stories.”

  • By way of BoingBoing: Hot 8 Brass Band
  • How to make a 3-D printer out of LEGO

Sunday – 31 August 2008: Coda
Saturday marked one year that SaraRules and I have been dating.

We kicked off the day by sleeping in. It might sound mundane, but it was a great way to kick off a long weekend. After we got up and decided what we wanted for breakfast we were up, out and on our way! We had breakfast at The Other Place.

We left there and headed up to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts to take in the Monet to Picasso exhibit. It was a great exhibit. There were over 70 pieces, paintings and sculptures. And you could get very close to most of the pieces – within 9 – 12 inches, in some cases. Looking at these works this close was a great treat. I believe that we are planning on revisiting this exhibit before it leaves UMFA; I highly recommend seeing it, if you get a chance.

After a couple of errands, we headed to the store to pick up a few things for the barbecue that was throwing. In fact, we ran into her at the store on the way there. Surreal. (And, yes, Ms. , I do know what the word means.) The barbecue itself was fun… and wound up turning into a poker game a little while into it.

We left a bit early and came home to watch Stardust… which we both wound up being too tired to finish last night. Seriously, with about twenty to thirty minutes left in the movie, we were both nodding off. We managed to watch the last bit of it this afternoon, though.

Sunday proved another fairly lazy day. SaraRules fixed breakfast and we lazed about for a bit. When we decided to venture forth, we did so with gusto. Our first stop: The embassy of “…a land where the furniture folds to a much smaller size.” That’s right, the Garden of Sweden, itself – IKEA. We didn’t go with much/anything in particular in mind, but wound up finding a few things of use.

Next, a quick trip to Kohl’s. I have been looking for a decent pair of olive slacks for a few weeks; I figured that since I was near the store – and it was a holiday weekend (read: “Sale”) – I might have a bit of luck. And I was correct.

Back up the valley to hang out with SaraRules’ parents for a bit before heading back to the apartment. Tonight, we watched Clear and Present Danger. I still prefer Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan to Adam Baldwin’s; I never saw Ben Affleck’s take on the character, though. Aside from a few anachronistic items (the types of cell phones and computers), this movie could have taken place in any modern time.

Tomorrow… don’t know what’s on tap yet. And that’s fine with me.

1… 2… 3… …28… 29…

Monday – 25 August 2008
Every Monday should != start like this:

  • Walk in the door
  • Put bag down
  • Unpack/connect laptop
  • Log into The Matrix company network
  • As systems come online, have Coworker #1 come to you and say,”I have a problem…”
  • Go to look at said problem only to determine that “something” in his computer is borked.
  • Take computer back to my desk to lobotomize it.
  • Have Coworker #2 come to you and say,”I have a problem…”
  • Determine the Coworker #2’s issue is potentially BIG and that it supersedes Coworker #1’s issue.
  • Tell Coworker #1 that he just got put on hold, until further notice.
  • Start in on C2’s problem.
  • Determine that it requires another IT guy’s skill set.
  • Get IT Guy #2 to take a look at the problem.
  • Have Coworker #3 come to you and say,”I have a problem…”
  • Determine that C3’s problem, while not as OMGWTF! as C2’s problem needs immediate attention.
  • Try to track down the hardware to solve C3’s problem.
  • Find two viable solutions and go with “Option A,” which is functional and fairly painless.
  • Resolve C3’s problem.
  • Check back with C2 and ITG2 to determine the status of that problem: Resolved.
  • Back to C1’s issue… and determine that it could be ANY of a number of problems.
    • Look for replacement hardware.
    • Replace Item #1
    • Not the problem.
    • Replace Item #2
    • Still not the problem.
    • Begin ancient Martian meditiation technique known as “Screaming”

    • Replace Item #3
    • Still “No go, Flight…”
    • Replace Item #4
    • BINGO!
  • Return C1’s computer to him.
  • Sit down and breathe. Finally.

That was the quick, Cliff’s Notes version of my first three hours today. Fortunately, Julie (the admin who sits near my desk) reminded me that we’re off next Monday, for Labor Day. At this rate, I’m thinking that I’m taking this Friday off, too.

23 August 2008
And the whirlwind is over, it seems.

is in Las Vegas.
SaraRules is back in SLC.
He and she are in the house
But there’s only me at home.

After I wrapped up the workday on Thursday, and I hit the road for Cedar City. SaraRules preceded us by a few hours, as she had to do her Capstone defense (which, I heard from the other MFAs, was amazing). Once we got in and took our things to the hotel, and I headed to Applebee’s to get a bite to eat; SaraRules was supposed to bring Lish with her… but he punked on us. The three of us sat and talked and hung out for a while.

Friday morning, SaraRules got up and did her “exit interviews” with the Dean and other faculty members. I slept in. Apparently, wasn’t able to sleep in. After I woke up and got ready, he and I headed to Cafe Orleans for lunch: I had the Shrimp Etouffe, he had a Shrimp PoBoy.

After polishing off lunch, I took up to Cedar Breaks. It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one for whom the phrase “sphincter pucker factor” comes into play when driving/riding on high-altitude roads without guardrails. We made the journey up to Cedar Breaks and took a few pictures at a couple of the overlooks. (To be posted later) I also took him along the Alpine Pond Trail that SaraRules and I hiked last year. He seemed to enjoy it. Once we got back into town, we met SaraRules at the local Dairy Queen. We needed our ice cream fixes. We also took in a bit of people-watching. Chalk it up as an afternoon full of “Win.”

After a little down time, SaraRules and I headed over to SUU to meet the other MFAs for dinner and a show. Dinner was at Costa Vida; the show was Fiddler on the Roof, which I had never seen… although I know three or four songs from the production. Go figure. I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun production. The pre-play plan was that Lish and Steve would come back to the hotel with us and have drinks. The reality was that everyone decided that they were pretty tired – and the MFAs were going on a hike this morning – so drinks fell by the wayside. Again. Oh, well.

This morning, the alarm went off far too early. 6:00 AM. I managed to hang in bed until almost 6:30, though. SaraRules and I got up, ready and were on our way. I headed over to the grad house, to say goodbye to Lish and the others before I headed north. I was pleased – and a bit shocked – to note that gas was cheaper in Cedar City than in Salt Lake City. I made decent time back to SLC. I came home to find that there had been a power outage in my absence. This was a “good thing,” as I realized Thursday evening that I had neglected to turn off my alarm clock. Whoops.

I shaved (including adding a new cut that required a Marcellus Wallace-like bandage) and headed out to meet and her teammate, JillDozer, for breakfast. I managed to catch , , and OnlyAly and invite them along, as well. We met a couple other skaters, only one of whose names (Movin Violation, from Salt City Derby Girls) remains with me.

When we broke from breakfast, I headed to Far West Comics. Today was their first anniversary and they had Lou Ferrigno there as a special guest. I told Matt and Nano that I’d be available to help out, if they needed an extra body around; I wound up manning the cash register. There were a LOT of people there; I’d say somewhere between 200 and 300 showed up, including ‘ sister and her family. Mr. Ferrigno seemed to be a nice enough guy. He took pictures with the patrons and signed autographs. Three hours later, he packed up and was on his way… to wherever it is that Lou Ferrigno goes. But, before he left, we (the guys working the event) were able to get a few pictures with him, too. (Also to be posted later)

Home.
Shower.
Back out again – I had to put a couple of eBay items in the mail.

Back home.
And, in a few minutes, I’m heading out again: SaraRules and I are meeting and some of the skaters for dinner.

*whew*

Namaste.

Thursday – 21 August 2008
The end of the work week is nigh. Selah.

arrived last night around 5:30 PM. He came in and gave us (SaraRules and me) a quick recap of his trip, thus far. Then, it was time for food! The three of us and went to Poplar Street Pub for dinner.

Post-dinner, SaraRules, and I headed home. He and I watched some of the Olympics, while SaraRules worked on her Capstone presentation. I watched Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh win their second consecutive gold medal in Women’s Beach Volleyball against Tian Jia and Wang Jie. In the rain. In two sets. It was an amazing match to watch. Next, we watched South Park. I haven’t watched the show in… at least five years. It was amusing, but I’m not sure that I feel compelled to tune in next week.

This morning, the alarm went off at its appointed time… but I wasn’t ready to let go of the pillow. So, I didn’t. I waited until about 7:20 before either SaraRules and I were ready to greet the day. We got ready, while slept in. She got on her way to Cedar City; I headed to work. As today is my “Friday,” and I are heading to southern Utah to hang out with SaraRules and the other MFAs for a couple of days.

And on to more server surveys!

Wednesday – 20 August 2008
After work, I picked up Chris and we headed to Far West for this week’s HeroClix tourney. We played a new (for us) format: “300-Point, Floor: 50% Restricted.” This means that we had to build 300-point teams, with at least half of our force built from the latest release: Secret Invasion. Aside from Chris, we had a couple of other people show up, too: Ma’afu and Chris2, both of whom are fairly new to the game, but were pretty eager to dive in with both feet. I wasn’t sure if we would have to draft (buy a booster pack) our first 150 points; we didn’t. We were able to pick from our existing figures. This was good for me, as I had been wanting to test out a couple of figures, especially the Susan Richards figure… so I did. My team consisted of:

I played Chris2 in the first round. He brought a four-figure team:

Matt and Nano helped coach him, since it was his first real game, I think. Spider-Girl and She-Thing got up front and personal, fairly quickly. I learned that Susan Richards’ Barrier power is a great thing… especially when you want to make someone go through Hell and half of Georgia to get at you, rather than make a bee-line for your and whomp on you. And, having three characters with Outwit didn’t hurt, either. I took out Spider Girl, She-Thing and… either Nick Fury or Ringmaster (I forget which), before time ran out. Win.

Next up: Chris. *sigh* At least it wasn’t a first-round game. His team consisted of:

And he went to work. Having played a game with Chris where he used Gamora, I assessed her as the first/biggest threat. I wasn’t necessarily wrong in considering her a threat, but Doctor Strange is no slouch, either: He can see through Stealth(!) and, thanks to his team ability, is able to copy others’ team abilities. In last night’s case, he took on the Batman team ability. Gamora stepped up and wailed on Nick Fury… but, being the master spy that he is, I used his LMD ability, reducing his damage and got him out of Dodge. That still left Batman and Sue as targets, but I managed to take Gamora out before Chris’ Batman and the good Doctor took me completely out of the game. Loss.

Next up: Ma’afu. He actually said that he had been waiting to play me. I was a little surprised by the compliment – I don’t think that I’ve had someone who wanted to take me on (Take on me! I’ll… be… gone…. If you don’t taaaaaaaake….) like that. Comments like that are usually reserved for people waiting to test their mettle against Chris and his team du jour. His team consisted of:

Ma’afu also got a little sideline assistance from Matt. My first assessment: Take out Ms. Marvel. I neglected to Outwit her Hypersonic Speed in the first round, but I didn’t make that mistake again. After she punched Nick Fury (and I LMD’ed him to a far corner) I made sure that Batman and Sue didn’t let her pull a stunt like that again. Nick took out his frustrations on Gee. I should have probably felt guilty about having a WWII vet gun down a little kid, but this was war (sort of), so he was fair game. Nick’s next target: the Human Torch. It took a few rounds, but I managed to snuff him out. And that just left Ms. Marvel. I beat on her a bit, but didn’t manage to take her out before time ran out. Win.

All-in-all, coming in second to Chris wasn’t bad. And above all, it was fun.

After the game, I dropped Chris off and headed home. I had no time to tarry: SaraRules got back into town about 8:00. And, aside from needing to go to Cedar City tomorrow to do her Capstone defense, she’s back for good. (That pretty much comes under “Win,” too.) I got home a few minutes before she got there. We hung out and talked about her last few weeks in Aspen, the overall experience and bidding farewell to her former coworkers. Then she had to get a few things ready for meetings she had today.

I was completely tapped from the lack of sleep Monday night, so when the alarm went off, I turned if off and rolled over. The second alarm, was not ignored, though. We got up, observed the necessary hygiene rituals, made coffee(!) and got ready for the day.

I had planned on doing Round 3 of server inventories today. I still plan on doing that. However, the first part of my morning was spent moving Julie from her old desk to one behind mine. No rest for the wicked.
