Monday – 10 September 2007
New day. New week. Same old same.

After I (finally) managed to nod off this morning, I slept pretty well. I woke up, however, with a slight twinge in my left knee. Haven’t felt that in a while, but I didn’t think too much about it. As I was getting ready for work, I decided that wearing my knee brace might not be a bad idea, just for a little extra support and whatnot.

Too bad I couldn’t find it.

I believe that it is a “casualty” of the Great Closet Migration. I thought I remembered where I placed it in the chaos. I was mistaken. At least the ache hasn’t been bad and it’s far from debilitating, so I’ll hunt the brace this evening or sometime this week.

The commute wasn’t bad, but there were a few slow-on-the-uptake monkeys. The soundtrack of the drive-time commute was my Crüxshadows playlist. I have had echoes of Heart on My Sleeve running through my head this morning.

Sunday: Coda
Today was a good day.

Post-errand running and spending time at the driving range, I acquired a cup of frozen mocha goodness, picked up Sara and headed to the Hogle Zoo.

The weather was perfect: Sunny with a light breeze. After seeing the animals (and some prime people-watching), we headed up Emigration Canyon to see if the foliage had started to change. It had… but not much.

From there, it was back down to Parley’s Canyon… and on to Park City. For ice cream. Look, if Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed could go to Texarkana for beer, we could go to Park City for ice cream. And we did. So there.

Westbound and down to SLC for dinner (and a little football) with Sara’s family. I met her brothers a few years ago – and, in a case of “small world gets even smaller,” I discovered/realized that one of them is a DJ at one of the local clubs – but hadn’t met her parents. Dinner was good. Football was football… but the game I’m concerned about is the Monday night game: The Ravens vs. Cincy. (That’s right, Ms. , it’s on!)

Then, home to load up on orange juice and Sudafed. Again. And work on the pics from the day.

I slept rather well last night, getting to bed somewhere around 3:00 AM.

I was up at 10 ’til 8:00.

Even better: I didn’t need to be up until 8:45.

I laid there/semi-dozed for the next hour.  I finally dragged myself out of bed and prepared to run a few errands.  The errand-running was uneventful, but productive.

On the way home, I treated myself to a large bucket of balls at Murray Parkway.  Today’s results were… mixed, leaning towards poor.  I had a few good drives, but nothing really consistent.  About 2/3 of the way through the bucket, a gentleman from a couple of tees over approached me and gave me a suggestion about my grip.  I adjusted and there was a noticeable difference.  He also asked if I ever made it to Golf in the Round; I told him that I had been there before.  He suggested that I talk with the golf pro there – he said that the pro had helped him more in 30 minutes of instruction than anyone else had in his 30+ years of playing golf.  Might be worth a shot.

Monday: Coda / Tuesday – 04 September 2007
And so, the day (and the holiday AND the long weekend) comes to a close.

I found a few things to do that, while not “labor,” per se, were nevertheless good and fun:

• I had a craving for sushi for lunch, so I met at Tsunami. Today’s fare included: a Steak and Chicken Teriyaki lunch combination, with Ika nigiri and a Bonsai roll. All of it was quite tasty.
• From there, I visited Kate, Perry and the kids. (Who needs a workout when you have adopted nieces and nephews?!)
• Perry and I snuck out to check out a few stores. Okay, we didn’t “sneak,” but saying “…and we heading to a few stores” doesn’t have the same ring to it.
• I went to Murray Parkway Golf Course, to swat a bucket o’ balls on the driving range. They had closed a little before I got there…
• …so, I headed to Golf in the Round. They were still open! I got a large bucket and was on my way. I mixed my use of the irons, rather than just the 2, 4, 5 and 7. I need some work with the 9-iron, but on the whole, I think things went well. The 2- and 5-irons did well. And, I had a few really decent drives with the 5-wood and my driver. I tried to incorporate the things that told me (which helped quite a bit) and I tried to be more aware of how I was positioning myself relative to the tee and how I was swinging the clubs. Still not perfect, but getting better.

Now, I’m about to put in a little time on (what will hopefully be) the actual lyric-to-drawing piece for Ed’s Song, as opposed to the dry runs and fly-bys that I’ve been practicing on.

• For some reason, The Who’s The Seeker just popped into my head. It was immediately followed by a random Harry Potter thought (as Harry was a Seeker on his Quidditch team). Then the two, like some horrible Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup accident, combined to form the following question: I wonder if any aspect of the song played a part in the outline that became the story of Harry Potter?

A new work week begins.

So far, the day’s been nominally busy, but not overly so.

Football Update
The Ravens played last night. Pre-season game. I went to Fiddler’s Elbow to watch the game… and to enjoy Guinness by the pint. Draft. Mmm. The Ravens wore their “Pitch Black” uniforms, but the intimidation wasn’t quite enough to help pull off a win. But it was a decent game.

• Steve McNair looked good for the time that he was in.
• Kyle Boller looked MUCH better than he has in the past few seasons – not jittery or unstable, fairly confident in his choices.
• Drew Olson, one of the candidates for the 3rd QB spot was…. there. I didn’t really see anything that made him stand out.
• Troy Smith, however, looked good. He got sacked on his first snap – the offensive line fell apart in front of him – but the rest of his game was solid. Not bad for the 2006 Heismann Trophy winner from *ahem* “THE Ohio State University.” , what can you tell me about Mr. Smith’s college years?
• The defense looked decent, but there were a few problems. They should be able to suss out the issues and get things to gel by the time the regular season rolls around, though.
• NY suffered four (4) pretty big casualties of war during the game, including the loss of WR Mike Jennings for the rest of the season.
• NY backup QB Jared Lorenzen…. You just don’t think of someone his size as a QB. But, he has skill and moves better than you’d think he expect. AND he has an arm. Well, it’s more of a gun, but you get the idea.

So far, today has been extraordinarily lazy. I’m not saying that it is a “good” or “bad” thing; it simply… is. The most productive things I’ve done so far are:

• Got out of bed.
• Dealt with some of the hygiene rituals.
• Installed Empire Earth, Locomotion and Railroad Tycoon II on ‘Nine.
• Finished reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I’m still in need of food and coffee. And a shave. And did I mention coffee? I did? Okay, good.

My company’s summer party was yesterday. It was a decent affair, but there wasn’t as much… punch… to it as last year’s event. I still had a bit of fun and it was a decent way to spend a couple of hours. And I still have two bags of cotton candy to show for it!

Four-Color Coverage
I was watching one of my favorite parts of Superman: Last Son of Krypton (the three-part beginning of Superman: The Animated Series) a few days ago and realized something: All of the modern (since 1978) major introductions of the character have involved a sequence involving the saving of an airplane/space shuttle:

• Superman: the Movie (movie, 1978)- Air Force One is struck by lightning, losing an engine and part of the port wing.
• The Man of Steel (comic, 1986) – The Space Shuttle Constitution experiences a system failure and is about to crash-land in Metropolis.
• Superman: The Animated Series (television, 1996) – A commercial airliner is struck by an errant missile while Superman is attempting to apprehend four criminals who have hijacked an experimental LexCorp aircraft.
• Superman Returns (movie, 2006) – The launch of an experimental space shuttle, being piggy-backed on a Boeing 777, proves nearly disastrous after Lex Luthor conducts an experiment with Krpytonian crystal shards. The shuttle’s engines engage – while it is still docked to the jet – melting off the tail.

My theory on this is: You’re dealing with a character “…with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men,” one of which is flight. Sure, you could have him stopping a runaway bus (just think of how much shorter Speed would have been…) or stopping a train, but an airplane? It just seems… more natural. For, you know… a… flying guy.

Something that I really like about the saves from S:TAS and Returns is that Superman doesn’t always come up with the “right answer” right off the bat. In fact, in both cases, his first attempt seems to do more harm than good. Thus, he has to deduce a better method for saving the passengers and bystanders… in a hurry. And since we’re talking about Superman…

Sunday – 20 May 2007
So far, it’s been another quiet day in the valley.

I woke up this morning a little after 7:00. And again at 8:30-something. And finally decided to call it good around 9:45. I surfed for a bit before deciding to take a trip to Paragon City. I got in on a team and we ran a mission and a half before the team disbanded. I decided to leave Paragon City and have some lunch. I also read more of Specter of the Past while eating.

I’m not sure what I want to do, but it’s a great-looking day out there… and there’s wind. This might mean that I have to break out the kite.

Yesterday’s excursion to the zoo was fun. I managed to walk right past the new feature exhibit – a white alligator – without realizing it. And, it’s not like there wasn’t a banner hanging next to it, either. In fact, I read the banner, but didn’t put “2” and “2” together to realize that it was referencing the exhibit house next to the banner. Yep, I’m a genius!

Unfortunately, the camera on my phone was the only thing I had available – and reliable enough – with which I could get some pictures. But, it’s better than nothing.

Breakfast last night wasn’t bad. There’s a new manager at Cheers, but we don’t know if he’s the new regular weekend/night manager or not. We shall have to see about this one…

Friday (coda)
Thanks to onlyaly and for their offer of an alternative to our usual Friday night Clitorati gathering. Tonight, we (the three of us and eight others) attended an Arena Football League game: the Utah Blaze versus the Los Angeles Avengers.

It was familiar, yet different. Shorter field. Fewer men on the field. Faster pace. And, it was fun. High-scoring fun. I’ve seen NFL games where the combined scores of the teams never broke double-digits. That wasn’t the case with this game. The Blaze beat the Avengers 76-63. Before tonight’s game, I wasn’t aware that former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Danny White was the Blaze’s Head Coach. His squad did a great job on the field. I may try to catch another game before the season ends in July. I may actually have a Utah-based team that I don’t mind rooting for now. Who knew?!

Added bonus: This game adds the first check mark on my 2007-2008 sports quest to see at least one game of as many professional sporting events as possible.

This was a nice – and different – way to spend the evening… end the week… hang out with friends. Thanks, again, to onlyaly and .

Thursday – 08 March 2007
Another NBN Thursday in the bag.  The day started off slowly, but gathered steam quickly.  I was even able to work on a report that I’ve had to back-burner for a few weeks.  It wasn’t a bad near-end to the week.

Post-work, I was invited out for dinner at Asian Star.  It was the first time that I’d been there since they moved to the new location.  The food, as usual, was good; but the wait for a table didn’t seem commensurate with the number of available empty tables in the dining area.  *shrug*  I do like the new building, though.  And they have “complimentary valet parking.”  This is an interesting twist.  Of course, their parking lot is big enough for two cars (if you’re a gully dwarf).
