Tuesday – 21 June 2011
Today is the Summer Solstice, marking both the longest day of the year and the first day of Summer.

Last night, SaraRules and I went for a post-dinner walk. We headed to the neighborhood 7-11 for Slurpees. Rather than double back, we took the long way home, making a rather large (1.5 mile) loop home. It was a good walk and the weather was perfect for an evening stroll. Back at home, we rounded out the evening with Top Gear… and a bedtime story for the proto-twins. Last night’s story: Seven Little Postmen

… which actually does a fair job of explaining how mail gets through the USPS mailstream.  (Of course, the book was written decades before REC sites came online, so there are a couple of differences, especially with reference to sorting technology.)

Friday – 03 June 2011
The weekend is mere hours away…

And it’s a sunny day out there. Hopefully, it lasts until I can get outside to enjoy it.

Last night, I achieved a new milestone in the “Hey, we’ve got babies on the way!” event: I felt one of the kids (I’m fairly certain that it was “Baby B”) kick for the first time.  It was neat. A little later in the evening, I felt a little more activity… but not sure which one it was.

After going out and running a few errands – including a walk through/around the local mall for some exercise –  SaraRules! and I stopped at Farr’s Fresh for some ice cream before heading home for the evening. We flipped channels for a bit and wound up finding Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1, 2) on TCM. That’s right a classic Japanese monster movie, featuring Godzilla, Mothra and Rodan. BAM! That’s what we wound up watching for our evening’s entertainment.

This morning, I woke up with Barenaked Ladies’ If I Had $1000000 in my head. I’m good with that.

Thursday – 02 June 2011
Another “Day of Thor” (look it up) is upon us. I’m hoping that it follows the appropriate “No Bad News” protocol. That would be a “good” thing.

This morning, I woke up with the opening theme from Love, Sidney in my head. I have no idea “why,” as the show hasn’t been on the air in over 20 (nearly 30) years. Granted, I’m a fan of some of Tony Randall’s work, but why not the theme from The Odd Couple?! As Dr. Rosenblatt would say, “It’s so bizarre…!”

Last night, I had forgotten that SaraRules! was going to a presentation of Die Walkure, presented by Fathom Events at the local cinemaplex. As had to postpone our D&D game, this meant that I was left to my own devices to find something to do. I wound up doing the dishes and some laundry. (*shrug* It needed to be done…) I also went to the gym. There was a brief internal struggle about did I really want to go, but it was overruled by the “You need to go” camp. It’s still slow-going, but at least I’m doing something:

  • Elliptical: 15 minutes, approx 5.5 MPH pace
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 135 lbs
  • Curls (dumbbell, seated): 3 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Shoulder Press (dumbbell, seated): 3 sets/10 reps, 35 lbs
  • Compound Row: 3 sets/10 reps, 125 lbs
  • Reverse Fly: 3 sets/10 reps, 50 lbs

I was quite happy to be done with the workout… while kind of looking forward to getting into the gym again. Go figure.

When I got back home, I treated myself to a little DVR fare while waiting for SaraRules! to get in. I’m almost up to the season finale of Human Target. (And I’m still wishing that USA or some other channel would pick it up next season.)

And now… lunch!

Friday – 27 May 2011
It’s my 9/80 day off… and it’s the start of a four-day weekend. I’m good with that. I’m looking forward to a bit of downtime this weekend.

Last night, SaraRules! and I hit the local Noodles & Company for dinner, ran a few errands and then came home for a quiet evening in. I fired up the 360 and tried my hand at the CoD: Black Ops mission that’s been kicking my ass for the past little while. I finally had to look up some hints online. Same result, but I think I finally figured out what I need to do differently. (Aside from the general “not get killed” concept.)

This morning, I slept in… until 8:15. Hey, it’s later than my normal mornings, so it counts as “sleeping in.” After seeing SaraRules! off to work – and puttering around the house for a bit – I dragged my sorry carcass out of the house and into the gym for the first time in [REDACTED]! I have witnesses to prove it — I ran into ‘s dad and former coworker/current co-gamer Josh. Today’s workout consisted of:

  • Elliptical: 20 mintues/Level 3/Random, pacing between 5.0 and 5.5 MPH
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 135 lbs.  (Gotta start somewhere…)
  • Curls (dumbbell, seated): 3 sets/10 reps, 20 lbs
  • Lateral Raises (with Flys): 2 sets/10 reps, 10 lbs
  • Shoulder Press (dumbbell): 3 sets/8 reps, 30 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/8 reps, 100 lbs

Not too bad for the first workout in a while. It’s my One Little Victory of the morning.

Friday – 06 May 2011
It’s my “on” Friday (finally), which means that the weekend is merely hours away. Selah.

Last night, SaraRules! surprised me, by suggesting that we head to Outback for dinner. I wasn’t about to argue. Off we went! Cheese fries + prime rib = GOOOD!   *gesture* We also went for a post-dinner walk through our neighborhood, which was good for working off some of the (delicious) calories we’d taken on… and is the closest I’ve come to a “workout” in far longer than I’d care to admit. After the walk, we caught up on a little DVR fare.

And tonight, we’re seeing Thor.

Groove. Boogie. Sway.

Work week: Day 2

As Google’s “classic” home page reminds us: Today is the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin becoming the first man in space

…also known as “Cosmonautics Day,” as well as being Yuri’s Night.

Thanks to an early day in the office, I was off work at 3:30 yesterday. I popped in to SaraRules!’ office, to say “Hi” for a surprise. From there, it was on to The Train Shoppe; they had completed the coupler repair on my Chessie locomotive. Next, I met , Tina and Casey for a stroll around Liberty Park. We did a couple of laps around the park which, assuming that the info I found is correct, means that we did about three (3) miles. I’m calling that a workout.

I came home, just in time to see SaraRules! off to her Justice League Junior League event. That meant that I was a “bachelor for an evening!” My first conundrum set in fairly quickly: What did I want for dinner? I solved that riddle with a quick trip to the local Five Guys. I came home, plopped down in front of the TV and DVR and watched a pre-Christmas episode of Human Target. I followed that up with a bit of HALO: Reach. Yeah… it was a good way to spend an evening.

Friday – 01 April 2011
Hello, 9/80 Friday off!

Oh, yeah… and today is April Fool’s Day, too.

Last night, SaraRules and I decided to enjoy get a bit of exercise, while enjoying the sunny and warm Spring evening. After a bite to eat at Noodles & Company, we went for a leisurely walk through and around Wheeler Historic Farm. It seemed as though many other people had the same idea, as we passed many other walkers during our trek. Back at home, we watched some programs that we’d recorded, along with an encore presentation of a Top Gear show from 2008, in which the hosts traveled the length of Vietnam – over the course of eight days – on motorcycles… which had to be one of the most non-intentionally funny trips ever recorded.

Today, I need to take Defiant back down to Expercom so that it can have its PRAM battery replaced and also be refitted from being a TuxedoBook back to a BlacBook. (Although, it’s gotten some interesting looks and lead to some amusing questions about “why” it has a white keyboard…)

Friday – 21 January 2011
Hello, Day Off!
I greet you with coffee and Irish cream!

Today is also ‘ birthday:

Last night, UPS finally delivered my copy of DC Universe Online.

Oddly, I didn’t immediately bound downstairs to install it. No, instead I waited until after dinner (I cooked burgers on the grill; SaraRules! fixed Tater Tots and green beans). It was one of the longest game installations I’ve dealt with… well, at least since playing games on my Commodore 64. Yeah, it was that long. But, it installed.

And then it patched.

And then I had to update the .NET Framework on my computer.

And then… it started.  Finally.

For the most part.

There still seem to be “a few” problems with the game. But, I have it. And that’s a start. I… recreated (sort of)… Nefer Tem. This version is a little different than his CoH counterpart. I’ll have to see how his power set progresses and how close/different he winds up.

After I got the game going, SaraRules! and I headed to the gym. Having come to the conclusion that I need more of it in my workout routine, I did… cardio. Well, a little. I spent 15 minutes on the elliptical, maintaining roughly a 5.5 MPH pace.

  • Elliptical: 15 minutes, ~5.5 MPH
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 185 lbs
  • Shoulder Press (dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 30 lbs
  • Curls (dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 30 lbs
  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/10 reps

Not too big a workout, but it was still a good one.  And I don’t know what I was thinking, but I completely forgot that my last bench press weight was 165 lbs, not 185. Nothing like jumping 20 lbs in weight… after nearly 2 weeks out of the gym! UGH!

:::INTERLUDE:::
Here’s a little something for your Friday morning:

Monday – 10 January 2011
A new work week begins. This one actually has some blue sky and sun associated with it. Of course, there is still a good bit of haze about the valley, but I’ll take what I can get.

Yesterday, and came over to watch the Ravens-Chiefs game. Nox brought Josh and Sabriel with him; both of the kids did a good job of entertaining themselves while we yelled at the television watched the game. After the Ravens-Chiefs game, we flipped over to the Packers-Eagles game, which was also a good contest.

After football was over, SaraRules! fixed dinner: Homemade beef barley soup, squash and dinner rolls. ‘Twas very good. After dinner, we played Trivial Pursuit and then I somehow convinced her to watch Smokey and the Bandit. It might not be the world’s best movie, but it’s one of my favorites — if I believed in “guilty pleasures,” it would be one of mine. (If memory serves me correctly, I believe that my father took me to see it in the theatre… three times.) I learned a couple of interesting things about the movie, thanks to IMDb:

After the movie, I finished up Rough Weather and called it a night.

Instant Replay: Football
There were some good games over the weekend… even though I missed both of Saturday’s games.

Baltimore Ravens at Kansas City Chiefs
30 – 7
The Ravens and Chiefs met at Arrowhead Stadium for the AFC Wild Card Playoff Game.

The Ravens came to play some serious ball, too. After leading 10-7 at halftime, the Ravens went on to score another 20 unanswered points and seal the deal.

Next stop: Heinz Field on Saturday, for a meeting with AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Joe…?  Derrick…? You guys just scalped the Chiefs and are going to the Division game against the Steelers!  How do you feel about that?

Yeah, I’d be passing around the high-fives, too!  Congratulations!

Green Bay Packers at Philadelphia Eagles
21 – 16
The Packers and Eagles faced off in Philly…

…and the Pack came away with the win

There was a lot of post-game talk about the two missed field goals by Eagles’ P David Akers… six points which would have secured a Philadelphia win.

Should’a. Could’a. Would’a.

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers move on to face the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

.

New York Jets at Indianapolis Colts
17 – 16
Last week, I was worried about the Ravens having to face the Indianapolis Professional Football Club in the playoffs. More specifically, I was worried about the teams having to meet yesterday. Fortunately, Indy lost last week’s game and the Ravens wound up taking on the Chiefs.

Saturday, Mark Sanchez and the Jets eliminated Indy – and the last Manning standing – from the playoffs.

I only wish that I had seen that game.

.

New Orleans Saints at Seattle Seahawks
36 – 41
Are the Seahawks this year’s Cinderella team?

They upset last year’s Cinderella and have their sights on da Bears in next weekend’s matchup.

Stray Toasters

I don’t know when it happened, but most of the haze has burned off and you can now see across the valley.

Friday – 07 January 2011
It’s Friday and my 9/80 “off” day. Despite that, I’ve been somewhat productive this morning. I’ve already take my car to the shop (tune-up and tires), started laundry, prepped the carpets for vacuuming.  And it’s barely 10:30. (Well, it was when I typed that…) I consider that “productive.”

Last night, SaraRules! and I hit the gym, for my first workout of the year. She started a new routine, so I figured that I’d give it a go.  It wasn’t too bad… except for the lunges:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 165 lbs
  • Front Squat/Push (shoulder) Press: 2 sets/10 reps, 40 lbs
  • Step-ups: 2 sets/10 reps, 25 lb dumbbells
  • Bent-over Row: 2 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Lunge (static, one foot elevated): 2 sets/10 reps
    • Set 1: 25 lb dumbbells
    • Set 2: 15 lb dumbbells
  • Push-ups: 2 sets/10 reps
  • Plank: 2 sets/45 seconds
  • Cable Horizontal Wood Chop: 2 sets/10 reps, 30 lbs

All-in-all, not a bad workout. There were a couple of exercises that were awkward, but nothing insurmountable.

Wednesday – 29 December 2010
It’s midweek… which means that it’s Comics Day! It is also rather windy here. According to The Weather Channel’s website, it’s 37F outside.  I haven’t seen any snow yet, but that’s not to say that it isn’t in the area.

I went to The Apple Store yesterday to have my BlacBook’s battery checked out – it was developing a couple of ugly bulges. I learned that my AppleCare warranty had expired 50 days ago. (Well, “51,” now…) Brad, the Apple Genius with whom I spoke, said that since I’d had no warranty claims with my MacBook, he’d just go ahead and replace the battery… at no charge!  WIN!

I left the store and dropped in to say a quick “Hi” to SaraRules! (Her office is close to The Gateway.) When I left there, I wasn’t ready to head home and wanted to check out a hobby shop or two. So, I headed north. I wound up in Layton and Clearfield. I checked out the Hobby Lobby in Layton; I was even more disappointed with their model railroad selection that I am with the store in Sandy. (And that’s saying something.) From there, I headed to Almosta Junction. That was (kind of) a mistake. They had A LOT of things that are going on The Covet List; foremost among them was:

These things are getting hard to find. They also had a selection of rolling stock, other accessories and a couple of books that I wouldn’t be ashamed to add to my collection.  Nevertheless, I walked out of the store empty-handed. *sigh* I considered heading up to Ogden and checking out The Wonderful World of Trains, but I think I’ll wait until Friday… assuming the weather holds up and that is interested in and available to go.

Once I got back home, I cooked dinner.  Last night’s fare was baked chicken, with seasoned collard greens and rice. SaraRules! and I watched the Vikings-Eagles game. I was expecting a “good” game, but got more than I had anticipated. Minnesota QB Joe Webb had a pretty outstanding performance… especially when you consider that he was drafted as a wide receiver! On the flip side, Philadelphia QB Michael Vick had a decent game, but his offensive line leaked like a sieve. He got sacked six times and was almost always under pressure.

After the game, SaraRules! and I went to the gym:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 165 lbs
  • Squats: 2 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs (I think…)
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Seated Row: 2 sets/12 reps, 100 lbs
  • Push-ups: 2 sets/10 reps
  • Step-ups: 2 sets/8 reps per leg, 25 lb dumbbells
  • Jackknifes: 2 sets/15 reps

And, later in the evening (which really translates to: “Far too late at night/early in the morning”), I made good on my threat to tear out my railroad’s rail yard:

  • Old and busted:

  • New hotness:

Yeah… I’m pretty happy with it.  For now. I still want to add two more left-hand switches near the top of the yard: One for another spur, the other to complete a pass-through to the main line.

All told, I’d say that it was a pretty good day.

Now I need to figure out what I want to do with the rest of today…

Namaste.

Friday – 24 December 2010
It’s Christmas Eve.
My uncle will be here in a few hours, as will Meliko; we’re still waiting to see if Kristen will be able to make it.

My mom and stepfather got into town about noon yesterday. We spent the afternoon and evening in; we had lunch and sat around and talked for a bit.  Later, Mom tagged Christmas gifts – she and Kris had shipped them here earlier in the week – and then we watched the Panthers take on the Steelers on Thursday Night Football. It was seriously like watching David take on Goliath… except this time, Goliath knew what was up and completely manhandled David. The final score was 27 – 3; I was just happy that the Panthers put some points on the board. After the ‘rents went to bed, SaraRules! and I watched the mid-season finale to Fringe and an episode of Burn Notice.

SaraRules! and I are heading to the gym in a bit; I think that my stepdad is going to join us… if he’s awake. (He and Mom were up at 0330 yesterday to make their first flight, so I can understand and appreciate that they’re “a little” tired.) Later, we’re all going to lunch with SaraRules!’ parents. Pat’s Barbecue.  Mmmm. I think that there will be a little shopping done and then it will be off to the airport to pick up Uncle Ronnie and Meliko – their flights gets in around the same time).

Workout
And…. we’re back. My stepfather didn’t join us, after all. The workout was short and sweet:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 155 lbs
  • Deadlifts (barbell): 2 sets/8 reps, 70 lbs
  • Curls (dumbbell): 2 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Shoulder Press (dumbbell): 2 sets/10 reps, 35 lbs
  • Lat Pulldown: 2 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Lunges: 2 sets/8 steps per leg, 20 lb dumbbells
  • Crunches (Swiss ball): 2 sets/15 reps

Stray Toasters

And, just in case I don’t get back on here tomorrow (or later tonight): I hope that everyone has a safe and very merry Christmas.

Friday – 17 December 2010
It’s my 9/80 “on” Friday.
It’s also my last day of work for the year.

With those two things, you’d think that the day would almost qualify as an “NBN Friday.”

Too bad that I spilled my coffee as soon as I got to my desk. *sigh* I made it out of the house, out of the garage, all the way to work, up the elevator and into the office with no problem. But, go to turn the corner at my desk…?

::: SPLASH :::

And I’d only gotten a small sip of the coffee in the elevator. “Some days…,” I tell ya. Hopefully, this will not prove to be a bellwether of the rest of the day. I got the office wet/dry vac and did the best I could to clean Ground Zero. (Fortunately, the carpets are scheduled to be cleaned this weekend.)

Last night, SaraRules! and I had dinner at MacCool’s. As usual, the fare was quite good. We split an order of Finn Skins as an appetizer; she had their Ahi Tuna Sandwich, while I had the Meat Loaf (with a spiced barbecue sauce). And there was Guinness. It was a good dinner and a nice change of pace.

After dinner, I stopped at Dr. Volt’s to pick up my second brick of ‘Clix, the tournament prize pack – gotta have goodies to hand out at tourneys, of course – as well as this week’s four-color paper crack. From there, it was on to Hastur Hobbies for 4th ed. D&D night. Josh, a former coworker, joined the group. We finished out the encounter (and that chapter of the story) without any deaths in our party.

After the game, I headed home to meet SaraRules! and we then headed to the gym:

  • Leg Raises (Roman Chair): 3 sets/15 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 155 lbs
  • Squats: 2 sets/10 reps, ~75 lbs
  • Row: 2 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Push-ups: 2 sets/10 reps
  • Step-ups: 2 sets/10 reps per leg, with 20 lb dumbbells
  • Jackknifes: 2 sets/10 reps

And, to finish up the evening we finally finished up this year’s Christmas card.

Thursday – 16 December 2010
I am a little shocked and embarrassed to admit this, but I had completely spaced off the fact that today was Thursday – and NBN Thursday, at that – until I started typing the date. Go figure.

Today is ‘s birthday:

Today is also the day that Ludwig von Beethoven’s birthday is generally celebrated:

Last night, Dr. Volt’s held a release day tournament for the new Heroclix set: DC 75th Anniversary. Even better, Jeremiah ran it, so I was able to play in the tourney. (This doesn’t mean that I didn’t get asked rules questions, mind you.) I went 1-2 for the night – it was a sealed draft – but it was still a good bit of fun.

After the tourney, I headed back home. SaraRules! and I watched The Terminator on AMC. I remember going to see this in the theatre (I believe it was at The Janus…) with one of my cousins. Some of the effects look rather… dated… but, on the whole, the movie is solid.

Sunday – 05 December 2010
It’s a quiet morning…

…aside from the birds chirping in the trees outside.

I’m awake earlier than I had planned, but am enjoying the fact that we’re actually going to see the sun today.

Yesterday morning, I put up Christmas tree #1. It’s downstairs, in the family room. Next, I got my things together for a tournament at Dr. Volt’s Comic Connection. There were only five (That’s right, “5”) players this week, but it was still a fun event. The theme was “Everybody Was Kung-Fu Fighting…,” in which all figures had to have the “Martial Artist” keyword in order to be eligible for use. A lot of teams used either Bullseye and/or The Question (Renee Montoya). Mine was no exception:

They fared well, going 2-1 on the day. Technically.  (Since I was playing the “bye” rounds, I couldn’t “win.”) But, as I mentioned before: It was fun.

On the way home from Dr. Volt’s, I stopped at The Train Shoppe. Yeah, yeah… I know… “Addict.”  Duh. In an exhibition of willpower worthy of a Green Lantern, I refrained from buying anything “big.”  I did, however, pick up a few small “Christmas” trees and a set of telephone poles for the city side of my layout. I also met an older couple while there; they were looking to start an O gauge railroad. Jeff (the Shoppe’s owner) talked with them about some of the differences between Lionel and MTH. I mentioned to them that I had purchased a Lionel set a few months ago and how happy I was with it…. and how quickly it had grown in the past four months.

After heading home for dinner, SaraRules! and I went errand-running. And then, we hit the gym:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/8 reps, 155 lbs
  • Squats: 2 sets/10 reps, bar only (so…. 45 lbs+)
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Push-ups: 2 sets/10 reps
  • Rows: 2 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Step-ups: 2 sets/10 reps per leg, 15 lbs dumbbells per hand
  • Jackknifes: 2 sets/10 reps

When we got home, we started in on Mad Men Season 3 until it was time to go pick up Christmas Tree #2. The tree retrieval process was fairly easy and relatively painless: We bagged and cling-wrapped the tree, put it (and the accessories that came with it) in the car and brought it home. The tree and wreath look very nice in the living room and work very well with the room’s color scheme:

Now, it’s just a matter of getting some of the other Christmas decorations up…
