“Catching all the names in the news…”

Okay, I just saw this in ‘s Journal and had to pass it along:

Then Rena and Em and I watched SNL with Derek Jeter, who really does look like a cross between The Rock and a Muppet

Nothing against Mr. Jeter, but he’s a member of the American League baseball team from New Amsterdam York. THAT means that as an Orioles fan, I am entitled to poke fun of him and his teammates (and that damned kid that cost the O’s a home run in the ALCS a few years ago).

Hmm. I like The Rock; I wonder WHICH Muppet she was thinking of…?

Peace.

Today, I did very little.
And it was good.

::: genuflect :::

The highlights, as they were, included trips to the comic shop, CompUSAirways, and Barnes & Noble and going bowling. Only Larry and I bowled tonight – Jess wasn’t feeling well and Scott and Angie punked out on us. Oh, well. We had a good time.

Tomorrow: FOOTBALL (and cleaning the apartment)!!!

Peace.

December 1.

So soon.
Without warning.
Where does the time go?

“From the point of entry, until the candle is burned…”

And at the end of the day, when the wick of the last candle is extinguished and the quiet darkness lulls them into a false sense of peace and security… then, and only then, shall the machinations of my cunning and most nefarious scheme be felt.

Okay, I don’t know where that came from – or why – but it was one of those things that once it had started had to be borne out.

Not much has happened since this morning: We went to work, we left a little early, we came home. On a positive note, it only snowed through the morning and early afternoon. After that, the sun put in a cameo appearance. On the way home, he sky seemed to be clearing up, so we may actually see some blue sky and sun this weekend.

Peace.

Two items. One came as a surprise, the other didn’t. I’ll leave it to you to figure out which is which.

  1. It’s snowing again.
  2. “I read the news today, oh boy…”
Beatles guitarist George Harrison died Thursday afternoon. Sympathy and best wishes to Mr. Harrison’s family and friends. I admit to being a “late bloomer” as far as becoming a fan of The Beatles’ music; I was introduced to it, by way of John Lennon, by a high school classmate. Better late than never… I’ll even admit to enjoying 1987’s “Got My Mind Set on You,” from his “Cloud Nine” CD. For more information on the man and his music, check out allmusic.com.

Peace.

It snowed, off and on, all day. Otherwise, it was a typical Thursday… aside from the fact that we pushed off going to the gym until tomorrow morning.

Jess has been working on making a teddy bear for the past few days. Okay, technically, they it isn’t a “teddy bear,” but you get the general idea. Attempts to attach parts of the pattern together have been giving her a problem, but she kept at it… and worked through the problems and now has a bear! She just walked in and showed me this. It doesn’t have eyes or a face yet, but those will come either tomorrow or this weekend. Not only is she the coolest gf in the world, but I’m also quite proud of her – and her accomplishment. Not bad at all for her first attempt at doing something like this.

I guess that is all for now.

Peace.

The sages and soothsayers were correct: New snow is falling this morning. It’s not TOO bad here; few friends have said that it is much deeper in other parts of the valley. Fortunately, we don’t get too much lake-effect snow here. Fifteen to twenty miles north of here (adjacent to the Great Salt Lake) and twenty or so miles to the south (adjacent to Utah Lake), however… shrug.

On a lighter note: Happy Birthday to !

I met on IRC a few years back. Then, she worked for a major studio/company. Since that time, she has worked for a different studio and is now working for PBS. A couple of years ago, she sent me a sketch of one of her then-studio’s characters; I still have that sketch. She was also working on artwork of her own and that it was verra cool stuff, in my opinion. Unfortunately, I lost contact with each other.

Fast forward a year-and-a-half. I had been thinking of getting in touch with RedTango for a while, but had been distracted by a number of things. I went to my mailbox this evening and in the Winter 2001 issue of the bLink newsletter/magazine, there it was: An interview with RedTango. Amazing! There was even information about her new (to me) website, redtango.com and her artwork, which is featured on that site. As I said this morning: “Surely, Providence smiles down upon us!”

Also…

One of my best friends back home is finishing up his music education degree this year; he is going to be a band director. Between my mother, him, Angie, and a few friends of the family, I do not lack for musical talent close at hand, relatively speaking. He came online tonight to take a break from his class work and told me of a marching band drill that he was working on: a Sting-themed work. He had five songs that he intended to use, but could not think of the name of one of the songs. All that he remembered of it was that it was an up-tempo song by The Police. I mentioned Synchronicity I and Synchronicity II as the songs whose names eluded him. He said that he had checked Synchronicity I, and that it was not the one, but he would listen to Synchronicity II… and then he logged off to get back to his work. He logged on a short while later to tell me that the song in question was in fact Synchronicity II, which also helped to confirm my title of “Keeper of Useless Pop Culture Trivia.”

And in weather news…

It didn’t snow today! It was windy and overcast, but there was no new precipitation. I had something of an epiphany also: Living in a valley bordered by two mountain ranges can give one a sort of claustrophobic feeling on overcast days with low clouds. This is not to say that it is an overwhelming sense of being closed in; it’s simply… different than living in a relatively flat and definitely non-mountainous part of the country. Taking a look at The Weather Channel‘s site, it looks like we will have new powder tomorrow. In fact, looking at the local map, it looks like the leading edge of the storm front is over SLC now. Yay. Oh well, at least the forecast for the weekend looks decent (translation: “Snow-free”).

Peace.

It is another non-snowy morning. Surely Providence smiles down upon us!

I was checking out a couple of my favorite websites and came across this new virus warning. Once again, it seems as though MS Outlook (MSO) has been targeted for infiltration and attack, thanks to what seem to be gaping holes in its programming. It makes you wonder: If Outlook is so vulnerable, why do people continue using it? I think that it basically comes down to the convenience factor:

  • It’s packaged as part of the Windows® family of products.
  • There isn’t anything additional that one has to download to make it work.
  • It’s not terribly difficult to configure.

I’m sure that I could continue that list ad nauseam, ad infinitum… but I won’t.

To me, using MSO is also a little like using America Online (AOL). Before I start a backlash of “Why don’t you like AOL” replies, let me just say that AOL isn’t for me. I know a LOT of people who use it – and like it – but it’s just not my cup o’ tea. I use AOL Instant Messenger, because it makes it easy (easier ?) to communicate with my family and friends who use AOL. Is that hypocritical? I don’t think so, but I leave that one up for debate.

But I digress… My point was, if MSO is as vulnerable to attack as it seems to be, and with options like Netscape Communicator/Messenger (yeah, yeah, I know it’s not perfect either) or Eudora or any other email program on the market, why do they stick so fervently with MS Outlook?

Just a thought.

Peace.

And, in case I haven’t mentioned it yet: It didn’t snow today!!!

It was a fairly quiet day.
Work. Gym. Home.

After forgetting to take an evening picture of the valley from work yesterday, I thought that I’d give it a go tonight. This is what I got. This was taken at 5:30 pm MDT.

Peace.

As hard as it is to believe: IT’S NOT SNOWING!!!!
Sure, there’s still snow on the ground, but there’s none falling!

::: happy dance :::

Here’s a view from the bedroom window. And, YES, that is blue sky out there!

Peace.

It snowed, off and on, all day. I missed getting a really interesting photo this afternoon – it was snowing, but there was a batch of blue, unclouded sky over a part of the east side of the valley. Maybe next time.

Work was rather uneventful.

Today’s Quote of the Day comes from Dee:

I know there’s a God. He put that on Earth.
    I know there’s a Satan… because I can’t have it!

I got the following from here.

The T’ai Chi Chu symbol, or Yin-Yang symbol, has its roots in ancient Chinese cosmology. The original meaning of “yin and yang” is representative of the mountains–both the dark side and the bright side, or the contrasting shaded and sunlight slopes of the mountain. The “Yin” represents the female or the shaded aspect, the earth, darkness, the moon, and passivity. The “Yang” represents the male, light, sun, heaven, the active principle in nature.

In addition, this symbol shows the perfect balance between opposites, or the great forces of the universe. This portrays that there is no “real” masculine or feminine nature, but that each contains a part of the other. The two are contained in one circle thus showing that both powers are in one cycle. Instead of these two being held in antagonism, they are held together to show the that they are mutually interdependent partners. One cannot exist without the other.

“Today, the yin-yang symbolizes the dynamic balance of our lives in the world. In this we are to balance and harmonize, not only with ourselves and others, but also with the universe–balancing the active yin with the contemplative yang (Drehler, 1990). As we begin to find balance in our lives, we become more whole, more complete, and more at peace with ourselves.

To summarize, the Tao Te Ching, Chapter 42 states:

The Tao is the One,
From the One come yin and yang;
From these two, creative energy;
From energy, ten thousand things;
The forms of all creation.

All life embodies the yin
And embraces yang,
Through their union
Achieving harmony.

I was feeling a bit… out of balance earlier this evening. I can’t put my finger on the exact reason(s) “why,” but I know that there was something was “off.” And the imbalance wasn’t extreme; it was just enough for me to realize that I was irritable… and for no discernable reason. Fortunately, it wasn’t anything that an hour’s relaxation and semi-meditative escape couldn’t counteract.

“Like a righteous inspiration
Overlooked in haste…
Like a teardrop in the ocean,
A diamond in the waste.”
-excerpted from “Grand Designs” (Rush – “Power Windows,” 1984)

Sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day grind that we neglect some of the more “mundane” things – like making sure that we are in balance and at peace not only with the world around us but with ourselves. It seems that this concept should be elementary, but it gets lost in the chaos stream of things that we call “Life.”

Just a little something to think about.

Peace.

I should have known better than to have made all of those midday posts last week. I was right about the end of all things being upon us: The new Ice Age has started. According to the local weather wizards, we will be getting snow for 7 – 10 of the next 14 days.

How I Spent My Sunday-after-Thanksgiving

Okay, it may not have been so noteworthy as to have a title, but what the Hell? You only live twice and might as well enjoy the ride.

  • We slept in… which was nice. Verra nice.
  • Dad called and we talked for a bit.
  • I called him back… because my brain wasn’t fully engaged and I had to make sure that I reminded to get something.
  • Got a call from Jenny (Jess’ sis) asking if we wanted to go to… wait… I have to build up to this one. I’ll come back to it after the list.
  • Hygiene rituals.
  • We met the inlaws and Jenny and Connor (Jenny’s son) for breakfast at the local Cracker Barrel. The food was pretty good. Even saw a few decent mullets.
  • We all then went to the aforementioned “event.” Again, more below
  • Came home.
  • Went to see Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with Jess and the inlaws. I thought that it was a pretty good movie. I haven’t read the books, but Sandi has and said that it was pretty faithful to them. I kept comparing aspects of it to parts of the Superman mythos and the Star Wars mythos. Go figure. Anyway, I think that it was entertaining and can see why so many people are drawn to the book series.
  • …and then we came home.

And now…. on to “The Event.” When Jenny called, she asked if we wanted to go to this. Yes, friends and neighbors, I got in touch with my inner redneck (again) and went to a monster truck show. It was… umm… uhh… interesting, to say the least. It wasn’t something that I would have normally done, but like the drag races this past summer, it was something that I didn’t see any harm in checking out. Note: I’m still a little dodgy about going to see a live wrestling match, though. If I did that, I think that my turning to the Dark Side would be complete. Click here to see the pics I took – there are also some pics of (MORE) snow and a mullet that we saw at Cracker Barrel.

That’s it… for now.

Peace.

The rest of Saturday was fairly mundane:

  • A trip to the comics shop for me.
  • A trip to the fabric store for Jess.
  • Dinner at Guru’s with Jess and Angie.
  • A trip to Barnes & Noble.
  • Back home for a bit.
  • Bowling (scores here) with Angie (ANG), Larry (MCN), Jess (JSQ). Scott showed up for moral support.
  • A late bite to eat at Village Inn.

It snowed, off and on, all day; we now have snow in the valley. Here are a few pics of the day. Driving home from bowling was… slow. 25 MPH slow. And that wasn’t just on the side roads, Angie said that she was doing 25 on the interstate. Yay snow. Or, in the words of Jimmy Buffett:

I gotta go where it’s warm.
I gotta go where it’s warm.
I gotta go where there ain’t any snow,
    Where there ain’t any blow,
‘Cause my fin sinks so low.
I gotta go where it’s warm.

I got to chat for a couple of minutes with Mom after we got home. And now it looks like the power is trying to decide if it wants to stay on… Great. No better time to wrap this up than now, under those circumstances.

Peace.
