Monday – 02 February 2009
Another new work week hits the ground running. I started the day with a training session for my team. I had planned for it to be roughly one hour long. It was close to two, because I had someone sitting in on it who provided some additional information. All-in-all, it went well, though.

Yesterday’s Super Bowl was a good game. It was the kind of game that I enjoy watching… as long as I’m not really rooting for either team involved. The Cardinals put up a good fight, but at the final whistle, the Steelers went home with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Congrats to the Steelers on their sixth Super Bowl win and also to their coach, Mike Tomlin, for being the youngest coach to go to – and win – the Super Bowl.

After we got home, SaraRules and I finished watching The Big Sleep. And, thanks to that, I finally added something to my NetFlix queue: The four Spenser: For Hire movies, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks.

Thursday – 29 January 2009
Last night, came over for dinner. I cooked Cornish hens with green beans and rice (cooked in chicken broth) for side dishes. Everything turned out pretty well. For dessert, we had ice cream and ginger snaps. It was a fun dinner.

After left and leftovers and dishes had been put away, SaraRules and I started watching The Big Sleep. I’ve never seen a Philip Marlowe movie – nor read any of the books – so it was a nice treat. Unfortunately, we were both wiped out from a couple of long days, so we didn’t finish the movie.

I just had my favorite exchange of the day, with Julie (our company’s property and asset manager):

Julie just… jumped (kind of)… in her chair and kind of slumped down, out of the corner of my eye, it looked almost like she “fell” in her chair.

I looked over at her and asked: “Julie, are you drunk…?”

She paused a second or two and said,”Yeah,” in a perfect deadpan delivery.

What made the conversation even better: Julie doesn’t drink.

It made me laugh.
It made laugh, too.

And, I’m making Julie my Human of the Day for today, too.

It’s cold (18°F), but we’re actually going to see the sun today. Hallelujah!

Last night was a lazy night of 24 and assorted TV watching and putting together some neighborhood tiles for a World Works Games model. Pre-24, I watched a couple episodes of NCIS – I remembered that I neglected to note something the other day: David McCallum, who plays Dr. Mallard on NCIS was also Lt. Cmdr. Eric Ashley-Pitt in The Great Escape… AND was Napoleon Solo’s right hand man, Ilya Kuryakin, in The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

As I mentioned, I spent a good part of the evening building WWG models. I found a tutorial that suggested an incredibly simple – and very modular – method for creating miniature gaming environments. The most time-comsuming part, so far, has been cutting the pieces out, so that I can mount them on the foamcore bases. That and being distracted by the TV.

Then I realized that I was more irritated about it than I had originally thought.

Maybe I’m a bit jaded, but I fall back on the “any landing you can walk away from” adage here. Is $5,000 enough? How about the fact that you’re still alive!? I’m sorry, but I can’t agree with the “It’s not enough compensation for what we went through” argument. You know what? You got to go home to your families. How many people never got that option?

I’m not saying that this wasn’t a stressful – and potentially mentally damaging – event, because it most definitely was… but YOU LIVED. Period. End of argument.

And now, back to our regularly-scheduled blog entry…

Yesterday, Chris and I headed to Far West Comics for a ‘Clix tournament. The scenario was Heroclix Xtreme Wrestling Federation. Deciding who to take was a bit of a challenge… mainly because I had what I thought were a lot of good options. I finally settled on these figures:

• 75 points – Gamora
• 125 points – Susan Richards
• 175 points – Ms. Marvel (Skrull), with Inside Information
• 225 points – Crispus Allen (LE), with Fortitude
• 275 points – The Spectre
• 325 points – Ganthet

The tournament prize was Grodd (LE)… which was the last figure I wanted/needed for my Sinestro Corps. (Sure, I’d like a veteran Cyborg Superman, but that wasn’t what was up for grabs.)  Then, it was time to play:

• I lost a few pieces in the first match, but won on points.
• I got schooled in the second match and didn’t KO anyone in that match
• I KO’ed everyone in the second match, without losing anyone… barely.

There was someone who went 3-0, while I went 2-1 on the day… but I got the Fellowship prize, so I was happy.

And, I beat Chris – for the second time in a week – so it was a “Win-Win” kind of day. After the tourney, Chris and I went to get a bite to eat and to hang out. We haven’t done that in a long time (not counting last Tuesday when he came over for dinner and gaming).

After that, I came home and hung out with SaraRules.  We finished watching The Great Escape; I realized that I had  only seen a few minutes of the movie – mostly around Steve McQueen’s motorcycle chase – before this. After that, I watched Batman: The Brave and the Bold… and something else… before heading out to breakfast.

This morning has been quiet and lazy. (It’s amazing what the lack of football will do to a Sunday.) SaraRules cooked breakfast – pancakes! – and we watched Unforgiven. Great movie…. and one that I haven’t seen this movie since its theatrical release. After that went off, I found Dr. No on BBC America.

All this, and I’ve even managed to partake in a little of City of Heroes‘ Double XP Weekend, too. I got Kurigari from 31 to 32… in one mission. Can’t really complain about that.

Not sure what we’re going to do for the rest of the afternoon, but later we’re heading to SaraRules’ parents’ to watch Shadow of the Vampire.

Friday – 23 January 2009
The week draws to a close… with fog and haze in the valley. It’s dense enough that I can barely see the freeway. Then it rolls out. And back in. Even Otis Redding didn’t see this much action.

Last night, OnlyAly and came over for dinner.  SaraRules cooked a maple chicken, with carrots and roasted potatoes, which was delicious. During and after dinner, the four of us discussed wedding-related items: Things that SaraRules and I have talked/thought about and things to consider, reminiscences of their wedding and the lead-up to it, and the like. It was a great way to spend the evening.

Later in the night, I watched an NCIS rerun and the new episode of CSI:. I am liking Laurence Fishburne’s character, Dr. Ray Langston. He portrays him with an interesting sense of curiosity and wonder… balanced with a desire to prove that he can hold his own on the established team. I didn’t get to watch the season premiere of Burn Notice, but it’s on the DVR.

It’s been a lazy, football-watching day. And that ain’t a bad way to spend the day.

We headed over to SaraRules’ parents’ parents to watch the Ravens-Steelers game. It was exactly the fight that I expected to see. The Ravens came away with a loss, but they played solid ball. After 17 weeks of football (they had their bye week moved up to Week 2), to went to the AFC Championship with a rookie coach and rookie QB, I am proud of what they did.

Thoughts and prayers go to RB Willis McGahee, after the hit that he took.

…and for the next two weeks, I’m an Arizona Cardinals fan.

Saturday – 17 January 2009
Today’s been a busy day… of sorts. We rode down to Cedar City with SaraRules’ parents to see the Zion: A Creative Perspective exhibit at SUU. Rachel came over to the gallery for a few, while we were there; it was nice to see her. Next stop: Cafe Orleans, for lunch – I had the Etoffay and a cup of the Shrimp and Chicken Gumbo. We picked up a few more things from SaraRules’ storage unit and then got on the road back to SLC.

Next on the docket: SaraRules’ company Holiday/Winter Party.

Friday – 16 January 2009
Seven more hours and not only is the workweek toast, but I am also taking a three-day weekend, in honor of National Black Peoples’ Day Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  And, starting next week, we also start 9/80 weeks, which will give us a day off – a Friday off, at that – every other week. Win-Win.

Tomorrow, SaraRules, her parents and I are going to pull off a Smokey and the Bandit-like Cedar City run: There’s an exhibit at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery that we want to see… and we have to be back in SLC in time for SaraRules’ company party tomorrow night. Hopefully, we’ll manage to see Rachel and a couple of the other MFAs while there.

  This is nothing short of amazing – the worst injuries that I have heard of were broken bones. Considering how much worse this could have been, that’s incredible.

• Yesterday, just before I got ready to leave work, someone from the exec end of the office came to the IT area and noted that she had “a problem” with her system. I went to check it out… yeah, there were issues. But it led to a good bit of amusement.
• I don’t know if the flight rings that they used in last night’s episode of Smallville were these rings, but it reminded me that I had looked for one a few years ago… unsuccessfully.

Thursday – 15 January 2009
Last night, we had SaraRules’ parents over for dinner. On the menu: Jambalaya. It was a nice change of pace to have them over rather than us going to their place. At one point, her father commented about it being weird, because he remembered being on the other side of the equation, years ago, and the first time that they had SaraRules’ grandparents over for dinner.

Post-dinner, SaraRules spent time finishing a quilt that she’s been working on and I channel surfed… and web-surfed. Among the things that we watched was The Late Show with David Letterman; Clint Eastwood was his first guest. The interview was good and, at one point, Dave was listing some of the pictures that Mr. Eastwood has been in and how long his career has spanned – over 50 years.

Yesterday morning, I came into the office and one of the first things waiting in my inbox was a rather tersely worded email from a Team Lead or Manager (I forget which… but I’ll refer to him as ‘Coworker B1’ for this case) in another department. In this email, he claimed that the IT department had effectively dropped the ball on completing a request that he’d put in.

I went to that department and talked with one of this person’s peers (Coworker B2) as:

1. the email’s author doesn’t regularly work in this office AND
2. I knew that I might not be able to refrain from punching him in the throat had I seen him

I let Coworker B2 know, in no uncertain terms, that he needed to inform B1 that we were not only aware of the situation, but that we had done what we could to rectify it and were awaiting hardware to complete the task. I made a concerted effort to keep my language as office-appropriate as possible, of which I think that I did a rather commendable job – while expressing my displeasure at the tone that the person-in-question had used.  I finished the conversation by saying that if Coworker B1 still had any questions about the way things had been handled that he could come and talk with me and I would explain it to him in detail.

Later in the day, I received a follow-up email from B1. It wasn’t a complete backpedal nor was it a complete apology, but its tone was far less accusational than its predecessor.

This afternoon, IT had another email. This time from Coworker B2. He was asking about the status of a task that he had entered. He made a point of noting: “I’m not accusing you of dropping the ball here.” That amused me. He closed the email with the following:

I thought I’d better explain myself before you sent your hitman, Rob, to pound on me!

That made me smile.

I just found out that Ricardo Montalban has passed away.

Even James T. Kirk was upset by this…

Midweek and all’s pretty much ship-shape.

Last night, SaraRules and I watched Hellboy. I’d only seen bits and pieces of the movie over the past few years, so it was nice to see it all the way through. And, it was fun.
