Wednesday – 04 November 2009
Yesterday was our… whatever you want to call it, yesterday marked one month since SaraRules and I got married. (Yep, I totally lucked out.) We spent a quiet evening in, eating dinner, watching TV and drinking wine. It was a nice way to spend our… um… one-twelfth-iversary?  One-month anniversary?

I woke up this morning with a couple of Wham! songs running through my head. I haven’t decided if it’s a “good” thing or a “bad” thing. Granted, they were upbeat and bouncy – which isn’t a necessarily bad way to kick of the morning – but it was 80s pop, after all. First thing in the morning…?  *shrug* I suppressed the idea of subjecting people on Facebook to videos of the songs this morning, at least, and I went with this, instead.

I’m not sure if any of the usual suspects will be going to sushi today. I might just have to make another excursion without them, after all… there are comics to get!

Workout
Wes and I made it to the gym yesterday afternoon:

  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 205 lbs
  • Lateral Raises (with Flys, dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 10 lbs
  • Reverse Punches: 3 sets/15 reps, 10 lbs
  • Curls: 3 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Tricep Extensions (dumbbell, overhead, standing): 3 sets/15 reps, 40 lbs

Post-workout weight: 185.3 lbs (gym clothes, shoes)

I think I might – voluntarily – do some side bends next time. Ugh. I’m also thinking of dropping my bench press reps down to eight, per set, and seeing if I can start increasing the weight a little more.

I neglected to note something in my earlier post: When I got into the office this morning, I found that Julie (our IT Admin/Property Manager) had adorned my cubicle with all sorts of Green Lantern-related pictures. On my monitors. On my chair. On my work laptop.  It was fun. Not only that, but she had also stopped at the store this morning to pick up day-after-my-birthday ice cream (Rocky Road) for an afternoon snack. Win-Win.

Wes and I made it the gym for a workout at lunch. The actual conversation went something like this:

Wes: How are you feeling?
Me: Fine…
Wes: Do you want to go exercise?
Me: “Want to,” no.  “Should I,” yes… but I really don’t want to drive in this.  *pointed out the window to then-falling snow*

At that point, he offered to drive and we were off…

  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Leg Curls: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Leg Extensions: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps – 2 sets @ 205 lbs; 1 set @ 185 lbs
  • Bent-over Row: 3 sets/10 reps, 35 lbs
  • Push-ups: 2 sets/15 reps
  • Core (plank): 2 sets, 45 seconds

Pre-workout weight (morning): 181.0 lbs

And with that, the work day draws ever nearer to a close. Selah.

Tuesday – 20 October 2009
This morning is rather grey and dreary… but it’s also without precipitation, so far. I think that maybe – just maybe – Fall weather has (finally) settled in over Utah.

Last night was a quiet evening in. There was football and a horror movie, 30 Days of Night. According to SaraRules and Reverend Tom:

“The goal isn’t just to watch ‘good’ horror movies or ‘bad’ horror movies; the goal is to watch ALL horror movies.”

And, after all: It’s October, the month made for horror movies. Or something like that.

Workout
Wes and I hit the gym today:

  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 205 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/12 reps, 120 lbs
  • Dips: 3 sets/10 reps

Pre-workout weight (morning): 184.5 lbs

Instant Replay: Football
Last night’s match-up between the Denver Broncos and Sandy Eggo Chargers wound up being more of a slugfest than I had originally expected:

Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers
34 – 23
Any game where you have three (3) kicks/punts run back for touchdowns is a good game… especially when both teams get in on the action.  This game was not an exception to that.

It was a definite back-and-forth struggle, until the Chargers started fumbling the ball in the second half. After that, Denver forged ahead and never looked back. All-in-all it was a good game, from start to finish.

After the Patriots’ 59 – 0 beat down of the Titans on Sunday, I decided to look up a couple of football facts:

  1. Highest-scoring game in NFL history: November 27, 1966, when the Washington Redskins defeated New York Giants 72-41
  2. Widest margin of victory in NFL history: December 8, 1940, in the NFL Championship Game, the Chicago Bears beat the Washington Redskins 73-0

So…at least the Titans don’t have the distinction of “the worst loss ever.” That’s gotta count for something, right? But, on the other hand, the Redskins have the (dubious) distinction of being part of the both the highest-scoring and widest margin of victory games… which qualifies them for the “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot…?!” file.

Yep, definitely time to change gears and have a little break.

So far, the day has gone well and has been incident-free. We like those kinds of days… especially when they fall on NBN Thursdays.

Wes and I hit the gym at lunch for a workout. I am trying to keep in mind that I can’t just jump back into the saddle and expect to be working out using the same weight for some exercises that I did before my hiatus. Nevertheless, we had a good workout:

  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Bench Press (decline): 3 sets/12 reps, 185 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Shoulder Press (machine): 3 sets/10 reps, 60 lbs
  • Compound Row: 3 sets/10 reps, 140 lbs
  • Curls (dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Push-ups (elevated): 3 sets/10 reps

Pre-workout weight (morning): 184.5 lbs

Wednesday – 14 October 2009
Midweek and all’s well.
As if that wasn’t enough, it’s Comics and Sushi Wednesday!

Last night was a laid back night. After a few post-work errand with SaraRules, we stopped at Dask’s to pick up dinner and then headed home. NCIS and Greek food isn’t necessarily a combination that most people would put together, but you know what? It works. After NCIS went off, we headed up to the in-laws’ for a quick visit and then headed back home – Project Runway for SaraRules; foamcore cutting for some WWG terrain for me.

Workout
For the first time in… two weeks, I think… Wes and I hit the gym for a quick workout:

  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 185 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs

  • Reverse Punches: 3 sets/10 reps, 10 lbs

Friday – 25 September 2009
Another weekend draws to a close. It’s my “on” Friday.

The background image on my secondary monitor (the 42″ one at work) is this one:

Earth Horizon

I occasionally watch videos – usually concert video or Fantasia on it, as it’s off my normal workspace. A couple of days ago, someone made a comment about the image and I quipped back that I was just waiting for Christopher Reeve to fly by and smile at the camera. (It hasn’t happened yet.) And that got me thinking…

I haven’t watched Superman: The Animated Series in a long time. That’s doubly sad, considering that I own the DVDs. So, this morning, I went about righting that wrong: I have a small window set in the starfield of Desktop 2… playing Superman: TAS.  Current episode: “The Last Son of Krypton.”

Last night, I joined SaraRules and Melissa for a workout:

  • Calf Raises: 2 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Leg Curls: 2 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Leg Extensions: 2 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Squats: 3 sets/10 sfdreps, 50 lbs (two 25 lbs weights, per hand)
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs
  • Reverse Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 70 lbs
  • Reverse Punches: 2 sets/15 reps, 15 lbs
  • Sit-ups: 3 sets/20 reps
  • Tricep Extensions: 3 sets/15 reps, 70 lbs

Post-workout weight: 185.0 lbs

This morning’s meeting went well. It ran a little longer than planned, but we accomplished what we needed to.

Wes and I went to the gym for a brief workout today.  When we got to the weight bench, someone had left 275 pounds racked. I was tempted to try it, as I haven’t done a good attempt at a max in a while. So… I did. Bar came down. Bar went back up. Slowly, but it went up. I was happy with that; besides, I’m not sure that I would have gotten 300 pounds. As for the rest of the workout:

  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps (with 5 extra reps on the last set)
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps – 225 lbs, 205 lbs, 185 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 110 lbs (10 second hold on last rep of each set)
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Curls (dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Reverse Punch (dumbbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 10 lbs

Post-workout weight: 188.2 lbs

On the way back to the office, I stopped to pick up a Slurpee. And it’s been quite tasty, along with the pizza from Papa Murphy’s.

I should probably get back to the grindstone.

Namaste.

Sunday – 20 September 2009
The weekend is moving right along.
(Footloose and fancy-free…)
It has been busy and somewhat productive.

Friday afternoon, I went out and ran some errands and then hung out with for a while. We hadn’t just shot the bull in a long time, so that was fun. We also talked about getting together for next week’s Browns-Ravens matchup, which is always a good time. After that, I headed home for a bit before heading back out for Clitorati. Chris and Mary were at the cafe when we got there. And, Chris came bearing gifts! Again! (I tell you, it’s like Christmas in September!) This week’s goody: He brought the John Stewart ‘Clix he repainted for me:

This, of course, made for a rather happy me. More pictures of what he did can be seen here.

Yesterday (all my troubles seemed so far away…), SaraRules and I got up, hit Einstein Bros. and Beans & Brews, and then went to help move to her new digs. We loaded the moving truck and assorted vehicles and then we were off in the “Great Cross-Town Caper.” Okay, fine… it wasn’t really across town, but that sounds better that “Seven Mile Shuffle.” The whole operation took an hour and fifty minutes, top to bottom… and it covered me for this weekend’s workout.

After that, SaraRules and I went shopping and then met up with her parents to do a little wedding-related shopping, as well. Both trips, were productive.

Back home for a bit to eat, get clean and change, and we were on the road yet again. First stop: Reception dinner for a friend of the family who got married on Friday. After that, it was on to Abravanel Hall to see Cirque de la Symphonie. Simply put, it was an amazing show. Feats of jugging, contortion, aerial acts… all performed to classical music, all on-stage with the Utah Symphony. , who saw the show on Friday had said that it was “a very, very good time” and she was right.

Today, I’m heading over to Kate and Perry’s in a bit. I’m teaching their oldest how to play HeroClix, which he’s been wanting to learn for the better part of the summer. So, today’s the day. After that, SaraRules and I are heading to the State Fair for a while and then up to her parents’ for dinner and football.

Why are weekends so short?!

Thursday: Coda
The rest of the work day turned out pretty well. Of course, after the way it started, it could only get better. I also got paid a really nice complAt lunch, I went out for a bit. I came home to pick up a couple of things (including my Florida State sweatshirt, as BYU is playing FSU this weekend…) and, on the way back, I stopped to pick up some fruit at Whole Foods… and a Slurpee®! That’s right. Frozen Wild Cherry and Pina Colada-flavored goodness.

After the workin’ day was over, I headed home. And we had dinner… and watched 300. Then it was time to go pick up and put down heavy things, with Melissa. Tonight’s workout consisted of:

  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 185 lbs
  • Leg Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 140 lbs
  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Bent-over Rows: 3 sets/10 reps, 35 lbs
  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Lunges: 3 sets/5 reps per leg
  • Lateral Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 15 lbs
  • Side Bends: 3 sets/10 reps, 30 lbs
  • Tricep Press (rope): 3 sets/15 reps, 60 lbs

Weight (morning): 184.5 lbs

Post-workout, just hanging out with Ms. SaraRules (and Heidi Klum)… which is a nice way to wrap up the day.

Tomorrow’s my 9/80 Friday off… and, even though I gave up The Leash today, I’m “on call,” as we only have one person in each office tomorrow. We’ll see how it goes.

Wednesday – 16 September 2009
Comics and Sushi Wednesday is upon us once again.  Amen.

Last night was kind of… lax. Not saying that’s a “bad” thing, mind you. SaraRules and her mom went shopping last night, leaving me at home to… well… pretty much do whatever I wanted. I actually made a few wedding-related calls – I talked with my ‘rents.  All’s well in their respective worlds.  Then I made calls to my Godparents, who won’t be able to make it out for the event. It was nice talking with them.  Then, I watched TV and cut some 6″x3″ pieces for use with a new WWG map and surfed the Interwebs.

Workout
Yesterday, Marci and I got in a short lunchtime workout:

  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Leg Extensions: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Leg Curls: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 185 lbs
  • Lower Back Extensions: 3 sets/12 reps
  • Side Bends: 3 sets/10 reps, 30 lbs

Pre-workout weight (morning): 184.0 lbs

Saturday – 12 September 2009
It’s almost 2:30 (at least it was when I started writing this…) and I’ve already gone out to have coffee with Perry, helped move (counts as today’s workout!) and run errands. And now, I’m stuck with something of a conundrum: What in the world am I going to do with the rest of my afternoon?!  SaraRules has to attend An Evening of Beethoven again – this time as an employee of US/UO – so I get to figure out what I’m doing tonight, too. There could be a lot of CoH and or WWG-building time involved…

Last night, we went to the aforementioned “An Evening of Beethoven”

The symphony performed:

  • Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus, op. 43
  • Concerto for Violin in D Major, op. 61 (featuring guest artist Jennifer Frautschi on violin)
  • Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, op. 67

And they were very well done. It was a lovely evening out.

After the symphony, we caught up with the Clitorati crew for dinner. As an added bonus, Chris and Mary showed up. And, as a… hm… “bonus bonus,” I guess… Chris brought the Bishop HeroClix figure that he customized for me.

He did a great job on it. More pictures of it can be seen here.

Stray Toasters

That’s good for now.  I’m off to go enjoy some lazy time.

Tuesday – 08 September 2009
A new (and short) work week begins. And there’s already been “an issue” with another of our cooling systems.  Hopefully, the maintenance work that is scheduled for tomorrow will take care of it.

Happy Birthday, to Sib-4: !

I hope you like this birthday ecard better than last year's text message

Last night wound up being rather low-key. I finished cutting out the last of the 6″x6″ tiles that I had – I’m down to a hair over five minutes per tile, with all of the necessary cutting. I still need to cut some 6″x3″ and 3″x3″ tiles.

Tonight, Chris is coming over for a knockdown, drag-out Green Lantern Corps vs. Sinestro Corps ‘Clix game. We’re also using our respective Corps’ heralds: I’m using Ion (Sodam Yat) and he’s playing with Parallax (Kyle Rayner), based on figures that we made and custom dials that we’ve found.

(And, hopefully, we’ll be able to settle on a decent/respectable TA for the Sinestro Corps…)

Workout
Today’s workout was brief, but fulfilling:

  • Sit-ups (incline): 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps, 205 lbs
  • Compound Row: 3 sets/12 reps, 140 lbs
  • Flys: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Push-ups: 3 sets/15 reps

Thursday – 03 Sep 2009
Tis the day before 9/80 Friday. Amen.

Last night, I started printing off a few things from Himmelveil: Streets. Nothing major, just some LinxTabs and a few street tiles. There’s going to be a lot of cutting involved with getting stuff set up, but I think that the flexibility will make it worth the work.

Workout
Wes and I got in a late workout today… but that’s still better than no workout at all!

  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Leg Extensions: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Leg Curls: 3 sets/10 reps, 80 lbs
  • Sit-ups: 3 sets/20 reps
  • Bench Press: 3 sets/10 reps each, 225 lbs/205 lbs/185 lbs
  • Lat Pulldowns: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs
  • Fly: 3 sets/10 reps – 2 sets @ 100 lbs, 1 set @ 120 lbs

Weight (morning): 185.5 lbs

Then, I rushed back to the office for the… 13:30 meeting… that got cancelled… at 13:25.  *blink blink*

Quote of the Day
Today’s QotD also has the added (dubious) distinction of being “Unintentional Porn Overheard at Work.”

I was talking with Coworker Andrew about a salad that he was making. Not seeing any meaty bits in his salad (they were at the bottom of the bowl, apparently), I asked if he was a vegetarian. He told me that he was not.

A couple of minutes later, on his way out of the break room, he stopped by my desk to note that while he is not a vegetarian, he prefers not to eat “animal-shaped” meats – he’ll eat chunked, sliced, diced or other not-on-the-bone meats, but other than that it’s “No Go, Flight.” He summed it up this way:

I don’t put anything in my mouth that I don’t have the intention of swallowing.

I immediately told that I owed a dollar to the swear jar. (Which will use my last “banked” buck in there… but it was worth it.)

Namaste.

Tuesday – 01 September 2009
First day of the month; the year is just moving right along. And, to top it all off, this heads up a short week, too. I’m trying to decide whether it’s going to be a four- or five-day weekend. I’m sorely tempted to take next Tuesday off, as well. We shall see.

Last night was my night to cook dinner. I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do when I left work; by the time I got home, I had not only an idea… I had a plan, as well. I fired up the grill and set about putting my insidious plot in motion. I thawed a couple of chicken breasts, made a dry rub for them, applied said seasoning and then slapped ’em on the grill. Next up, a can of cream of mushroom soup went on the stove. When the soup was ready, I added two cups of rice and let it sit. Back to the bird. While waiting for the chicken to cook through, I watched Monday Night Football through the screen door. When the chicken was done, I brought it inside, pulled a green leaf salad out of the fridge and it was dinner time.  I was pleased with how well the chicken turned out – nicely spiced on the outside, tender and juicy inside.

After the game, SaraRules quilted for a bit while I surfed and geeked.

Football Update
The Vikings traveled to The Lone Star State to take on the Texans in Reliant Stadium.

Minnesota Vikings at Houston Texans
17 – 10

This game had a few notable features:

  1. Minnesota QB Brett Favre, under center, for the first half three quarters of the game.
  2. RB Adrian Peterson (yes, that one).  ‘Nuff said.
  3. RB Chester Taylor put up a number of good runs for the Vikings offense.
  4. Texans’ QB Matt Shaub looked decent… but a little fragile, at times.

This was  good (preseason) Monday night game. Both teams showed up to play. Favre, only scheduled to play the first half, stayed in the game through most of the third quarter. He looked good on the field – solid passes, set up good runs and even threw a couple of blocks.

One more week of preseason and then the real deal kicks off.  Amen.

Workout
Wes and I got in a late workout today… but that’s still better than no workout at all!

  • Calf Raises: 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Sit-ups (with twist): 3 sets/20 reps
  • T-Bar Pull (barbell): 3 sets/10 reps, 85 lbs

  • Lat Pulldowns: 3 sets/10 reps, 120 lbs

Friday – 28 August 2009
Welcome to the weekend… well, almost the weekend. It’s my “On” Friday, but I’m off next Friday… which will kick off a four-day weekend, thanks to Labor Day. And, as the first one in the bullpen today, I kicked off the morning with Tank! and 2112. That’s not such a bad way to start the morning.

Last night, SaraRules and I went to dinner at Cafe Zupas; it was a nice change of pace. I had the Honey Bacon Club panini and the Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo; SaraRules had the Thai Peanut Chicken Salad and the Yucatan Chicken Tortilla Soup.

After dinner, we met SaraRules’ coworker – and former schoolmate – Melissa at the gym for a workout:

  • Calf Raises – 3 sets/10 reps, 100 lbs
  • Leg Curls – 3 sets/10 reps, 70 lbs
  • Leg Extensions – 3 sets/10 reps, 70 lbs
  • Lower Back Extensions – 3 sets/10 reps
  • Bench Press – 3 sets/10 reps, 185 lbs
  • Sit-ups (incline) – 3 sets/10 reps
  • Curls (dumbbell) – 3 sets/10 reps, 25 lbs
  • Tricep Extensions (rope) – 3 sets/15 reps, 50 lbs
  • Core (plank) – 3 sets, 45 seconds
