“It’s hard to take the heat, it’s hard to lay blame, to fight the fire while we’re feeding the flames…”
everyday glory December 5th, 2001Brace yourselves. This is going to shock you: It snowed again today. Actually, it snowed a little this morning. It stopped for a while. It snowed again this evening. This is a picture, taken at work, around 4:30 pm MDT.
While everyone else seems obsessed with the “What (fill-in-the-blank) Are You” surveys/tests, I’ve been somewhat… distracted by the game Reflections. It is addictive. Very addictive.

The management team had a dinner/planning meeting tonight. One of the things that came out of the meeting: The supervisors were given journals and asked to record some of the highlights of this holiday season. Sidenote: This is something of an oxymoron: “highlights” and “working for the Postal Service at Christmas.” I know that sounds incredibly cynical, but take it from this angle:
- USPS employees have a reputation for having high on-the-job/job-related stress. Most of this is unwarranted. It’s just the few who go to extremes who cause the public to look with jaded eyes when someone says “I work for the Postal Service.”
- December is the USPS’ busiest time of year. Nuff said.
- Many crews have their work hours extended during this time.
- Tempers and feelings can be stretched a little thin. “So much to go, so little time…”
That said, I’m sure that there will be a number of noteworthy things this year; the most notable is that this will be the BUSIEST holiday season that the Salt Lake REC has seen. Last year we had either 4, 5, or 6 (I can’t remember) cities whose mail we processed; this year, we have 25. The most interesting thing about the whole “highlight journal” idea is: The supervisors have been given sanction to keep journals. I simply find it curiously odd and ironically funny; those who know me well know why I feel this way. I wish them well in this endeavor; it will be interesting to see what people have to say. As Lewis Carroll wrote: “‘Curiouser and curiouser,’ said little Alice.”

That’s it. Really. Fait accompli. No more. Finis. Coda. The end. Tune in tomorrow (same LJ channel, same LJ time) for more random or maybe even not-so-random musings.
Peace.
