Another weekend draws to an end. It’s been a good one. I saw a couple of movies, The Black Dahlia and Everyone’s Hero, over the past couple of days. While I mostly enjoyed Dahlia, it was a little… confusing at points. There were times when it was a little difficult to tell who was talking about whom (or what). There were things that seemed to be thrown in for no other reason than to have something to say or do. I am curious about how much of the novel they used and how much “creative license” they took with the material. On an aesthetic level, I must admit that the movie looked really good. Everyone’s Hero was a fairly light-hearted kids’ movie. It played a little fast-and-loose with baseball history, but I really wonder how many kids – or even their parents – will actually look up the facts about the 1932 World Series. The film featured the voices of many well-known actors and actresses. The moral was the time-old “give it all you’ve got” story. The animation was not quite what I expected. It wasn’t bad, but it was… different. One thing that I did like was the way that Chicago looked. I’m not sure whether or not the animators were trying to portray it both in the style of the movie and in the way that the ten-year-old protagonist saw it, but whatever it was… it worked for me. Something else to note about the movie: It was directed by the late Christopher Reeve and featured the voice of his late wife, Dana, as Yankee Irving’s mother, Emily.

Ravens Update

The Raiders came to Charm City looking to avenge their loss to San Diego and claim a 1-1 record.Oops. Apparently, no one told them that Baltimore has an offense now. An effective offense. One that doesn’t rely on the defense or special teams to score all of the points. An offense who came ready to play. And win. This isn’t to say that they were perfect. The Ravens were assessed a lot of unnecessary – and stupid – penalties. But they didn’t let it stop their momentum. Both the offense and the defense worked as cohesive units and worked the field on both sides of the ball. Steve McNair was poised in the pocket. He took his time and didn’t rush plays; on one down, he saw that none of his passing lanes were open and ran for good yardage. Last week, Haloti Ngata had his famous 60-yard interception return. This week, Kelly Gregg and Ray Lewis got in on the action. On the Raiders side, I have to commend QB Andrew Walter. After starting QB Aaron Brooks was pulled from the game (two fumbled snaps and a shoulder injury), Walter came in the Raiders’ offense. He’s only in his second year in the NFL, but he had the poise and control that Ravens fans had hoped that Kyle Boller would have shown. He’s definitely going to be someone to watch.

I managed to work my way from 230K points of XP debt down to 15K. And I only have 800K to go before Security Level 44. (I don’t think that I would have ever imagined myself saying “only 800K” with respect to earning experience.) No idea what power I’ll pick up next. And, given how long it took me to figure out what to do about my fourth costume, I might want to start giving some thought to what the fifth costume will be.

And so, another work week comes to an end.  It wasn’t a bad one.  And, I got to kick off the weekend a little early, too.  Bonus points for that.

Tonight, many of us skipped Clitorati and instead went to help and celebrate their birthdays.  They hosted a nice gathering at their house; it was themed as a 1920s speakeasy… with gothic/Cthulhu-esque twists.  Quite fun.  Some of us gathered in the living room for a game of Arkham Horror.  We won the game… and without setting the entire county on fire, either!  Of course, my character did wind up losing his cool – and sanity – when I confronted a monster that was roaming the city… but we won’t talk about that.

I am coming down with a cold… or some kind of bug.  I’ve had a scratchy throat for a couple of days.  And I’m seriously congested.  And I’m a little achy.  I was thinking about this earlier and the first thing that came to mind was a line from The Spin Doctors’ Shinbone Alley/Hard to Exist, from their Pocketful of Kryptonite CD: “My body hurts like Hell, and all I can do is wonder why…”  I’m not in that much pain, but the lyric popped into my head and made me chuckle.
I wonder how much I can attribute my current malady to the changes the weather has undergone in the past… 24 – 48 hours.  The temperature has dropped by roughly 20°F in this timeframe.  I haven’t seen the peaks, but they were projected to get snow this weekend.  Snow or no snow… it’s too damned cold… and far too soon.

Today has been good.  Work was good.  The lunchtime workout went well.  And the post-work evening was relaxing.  There was even a bit of rain.  That cooled things off quite a bit; the forecast is for the cool weather to continue for the next few days.  The mountains could even see… snow.

I decided to skip my pilgrimage to Beans and Brews this morning.  In lieu of coffee, I stopped and picked up some cinnamon rolls (and some milk) for breakfast.  It seemed like a good idea at the time.  I was wrong – I spent the better part of the morning and early afternoon trying to avoid staring at my inner eyelids.  Aside from that, it was a good day.

It’s been a pretty good day… but, following a nearly three-hour fight with the backyard, I am tapped.

I joined a team for an arch-villain mission. We won. I died a couple of times, but was out of debt shortly thereafter. I should have cut my losses there. Instead, I joined a mission in Recluse’s Victory – one of the PVP (player vs. player) zones. And it wasn’t just PVP, it was PVE (player vs. environment) as well. And the environment wanted me dead. Very dead. Decidedly dead. It did a very good job of convincing me that it was serious about this. To the tune of 162k of debt. Whoop-de-damn-doo.

But, I am looking forward to the new content in the upcoming “Issue 8” game update.

Five years have passed. What have we learned?

• We were not as untouchable and invulnerable as we had thought.
  We can be hurt. We can bleed. Many men and women have died – both as victims and in defense of our country and our way of life. One thing that we did find in the aftermath of the tragedy was a renewed sense of national identity. There were some missteps in the days and weeks immediately following the 2001 attacks, but out of that darkness, many people stepped forward and served as brightly shining beacons of what it meant – and means – to be “American.” I don’t just the ones who chose to join the Armed Forces, although their contributions and sacrifices have been great. I am mostly referring to those who joined with their friends, family and neighbors to see to it that – although the country had endured a great crisis – we would not just lay down and die, nor were the losses and setbacks going to cripple us as a nation… nor as individuals.
• While there are those who welcome and wish to emulate us, not all people think that we are as great as we sometimes think of ourselves. There is room for change in the world, but we often turn a blind eye to the problems in our own country.
  It is said that “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.” Sometimes, this is true. But is it foolish to act in the interests of those who honestly want and/or need help? The balance comes in finding the line between seeking out those who really need our help… and doing those things that are merely self-serving – or aggrandizing – interests. Yes, we have done good in the world since 11 September 2006, but aren’t there enough social and economic issues in our own backyard that deserve as much – if not more – attention?

But… we’re not without hope. We hope – and believe – that things can be better. We hope to find common ground on which to stand. We hope to see the good things, not only in our neighbors, but also in ourselves.

The road to understanding is a long one. And it is often rough. But, with perseverance and determination, we can make the journey.

It’s been a pretty quiet weekend. Friday evening brought saw a small Clitorati; there were eight or nine of us there. That was followed by an even smaller post-Clitorati dinner group. But, both gatherings had good conversation with good friends. Saturday’s highlights included a roughly two-and-a-half hour nap.

Baltimore at Tampa Bay
17 – 0 (Halftime)
Baltimore went to Tampa Bay to take on the Buccaroos Buccaneers. It was former Tennessee Titan QB Steve McNair’s regular season debut as a Raven. He’s a veteran and he looked like it. Poise. Control. It was all there. He engineered an opening drive that resulted in a 4-yard Jamal Lewis touchdown run. In the second quarter, Chris McAllister intercepted a Chris Sims pass for a 60-yard runback touchdown. And, the half almost ended with another Ravens TD, following a Ray Lewis-blocked pass that was caught by rookie Defensive Tackle Haloti Ngata… who rumbled 60 yards down the sideline, before being forced out of bounds. This set up a 20-yard field goal by Matt Stover. It’s only halftime, but it’s been a great start to the Ravens’ season, so far. UPDATE:  Third quarter…. another Matt Stover FG makes it 20 – 3. UPDATE: Final Score: 27 – 0, following a 4-yard Daniel Wilcox TD reception.  This is the way to start a season.

Overall, I think that it was a decent NBN day.  There was some… oddness at work, but I left before I had a chance to find out what the outcome was.  There’s always tomorrow for that.

Tonight, I had dinner with and at Thai Garden.   Both the company and the food were very good.

After dinner, and I went to the new Century theatre in Midvale/Sandy/wherever it is… and saw Invincible.  It was a very good movie.  I take back any “Marky Mark and the Football Bunch” cracks I made about it.  While it was a “football movie,” it used football as a backdrop and not as the main focus of the film.  It was a character-driven movie… and the characters were not treated like caricatures.  You could understand their motivations and their personalities.  They experienced growth and development.  There was a good mixture of emotional content and humor.  The movie told the story of a man (Vince Papale), his family, his friends, and the way that he dealt with the challenges that life presented him.  Director Ericson Core did a good job of presenting a balanced film. Additionally, a s the movie was set in Philadephia in the mid-1970s, I found myself drawing parallels to Rocky and Rocky II on more than one occasion.  I definitely recommend this film.

For the most part, today was pretty quiet.  A little after lunch, something happened and the power went out.  Not just in our office.  Not just on our floor or in our building.  Apparently, a good portion of American Fork went dark.  As yet, I don’t know why – I really haven’t researched it, so… yeah.

Other than that, it’s been a good day.

I tried helping a former teammate with a mission.  That went badly.  Repeatedly.  I think that I spent more time in – and running back to the mission from – the hospital than I spent beating on bad guys.

When I got to work this morning, I walked across the parking lot, into the office and set my things down.  My Team Lead called over to me and asked if I had seen “the new addition to the handicapped parking sign” in the lot.  I hadn’t; I had been distracted by the smoke from across I-15 and paid no attention to the sign.  Eric apparently had missed the modification as well.  So… we both headed for the parking lot.  This is what we found:

Background information:  The building management recently took a hard-line stance towards abuses of the reserved, visitors and handicapped parking spots on the premises.  Employees of one of the building’s tenents apparently decided that they didn’t have to observe any parking rules… and would park wherever they damned well wanted to park.  After a few visits from Bob, the local towing service operator/driver, it seems as though (some of) those people had an epiphany.  Imagine that!  Still, it took a few more visits from Bob to finally drive the point home.  And it’s amazing to note how many people suddenly “discovered” ailments/illnesses that warranted a handicapped sticker or tag.

It’s been a good day.  Neither work nor the gym were bad.  Although, my lower back would probably disagree since I put it through the paces with a couple of exercises.  But, it was good to be back in the swing of things.

I hope that everyone had a good Labor Day.  I spent a good portion of it… laboring: cleaning and packing some things… and attacking the jungle that is the backyard.  All-in-all, it was good to get them all done.  And now, I’m kind of tired.
Tonight, and I watched a program on TLC called The Shrinking Woman.  It was the story of one woman’s journey from being 620 pounds down to 180 pounds, through a series of highly invasive surgeries.  Wow.

Tomorrow: Back to the work-a-day grind.

Today has been a slow day.  I slept in (which was a nice thing).  Other than that, it’s been rather quiet and relaxing.  I felt rather… *blah* for most of the day, so having a day full of doing nothing was pretty much just what the doctor ordered.  And, the fact that tomorrow is still part of the weekend, well, that’s just icing on the cake.

I haven’t spent much time in Paragon City of late, so I decided to check it out for a bit this evening.  There was crime afoot.  I joined a couple of teams and did my part to help eliminate it.  I died a few times, but by the time I left the city, I was debt-free and working my way to Security Level 44.  Only a little more than 1.7 million points to go.

I finally decided not only on a final look for my third costume, but also on what the fourth costume should be/look like:  I went with a more “retro” look (1, 2, 3) for the third costume; whereas the fourth one has an armored look (1, 2)… and should be a little better suited for sewer and underground missions.

Mom and Cynthia left today.  It was a short – but good – visit.  Cynthia had an early flight, but Mom was around until late afternoon.  We had lunch with , the boys and her grandparents.

This evening, I watched the new Fantastic Four cartoon on Cartoon Network.  I’m not overly thrilled with the animation style, but I’m not going to write it off yet.

Tonight, and I were watching… something… when an ad for Comcast’s “On Demand” service came on; the ad was for their “Dating on Demand” listings.  This piqued our curiosity.  And such curiosity could not go unappeased.  So, we checked out a few of them.  There were two sections:  “LDSPromise.com” and “Hurry Dating.”  If you’re in the Salt Lake Valley and have Comcast Cable, you need to watch either – or both – of these.  They are pure comedy.  (Is it a bad thing that some of them reminded me of an old Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Gary Kroeger doing a dating video… which he did in the form of a music video?)
