Friday
Finally.

The day started off normally. Work. Work. More work. With a side order of work, thrown in for good measure. We’ve been trying to resolve some inventory issues and other “bugs” keep popping up. This does not make for a good day. In fact, it makes for a rather long day. All that we could do was trudge through it. And so, we did.

Tonight, I decided against going to Borders and drawing. This decision was based largely on the fact that I was almost ravenously hungry by the time I left work. And the headache that I had developed over the last hour that I was at work didn’t help, either. And so, I came home. I toyed with the idea of going out after I had eaten, but I came down with a sudden case of laziness. Thus, I spent a quiet evening at home.

Stray Toasters

  • I talked with my dad again today; I spoke with him (briefly) yesterday when he relayed a call from my sister. On the whole, it was a social call, but he did have some information to relay, as well.
  • TechTV aired Silent Mobius as part of their “Anime Unleashed” programming. I tried to follow it. It was an interesting program. Something of which I was unaware: Kia Asamiya, currently the penciller on Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men, created Silent Mobius. While watching the first few minutes of the show, I kept looking at the screen and thinking that the artwork looked familiar… but I couldn’t figure out “why.” When I was looking up background information on the show, I came across his name. The pieces fell into place at that point.
  • I saw a commercial a few nights ago that showed a young man entering a convenience store, buying a pack of gum and then leaving. The camera then showed a gumball rattling around a gumball machine. As the ad faded out, it said that viewers could find out why the gumball was so wound up [at a later date]. Apparently today was that day. The “same” commercial aired tonight. It was for Wrigley’s Extra® gum. This time, after the young man left the store, the camera refocused on the gumball – the self-avowed “angry gumball” – as it rattled around and broke free of the machine. Then it started singing. Yes, singing. Not just singing, but bouncing along the “lyrics” of the song. It was like a surreal flashback to the sing-along songs/films that they used to show in elementary school. With an angry gumball.
  • Van Morrison. Moondance. Need I say more?
  • Procol Harum. Whiter Shade of Pale. Ditto.
  • My friends Christine and Don have a son who’s approaching two-years-old. This was excerpted from tonight’s conversation with Don:

[21:20] DRD: I was so proud of Thomas tonight.
    [21:21] : ?
[21:21] DRD: he opened the DVD [player], took out my drum corps…put in his Wiggles DVD and closed the drawer.
    [21:21] : BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    [21:21] : That’s perfect!
[21:21] DRD: he put it in upside down…but he’s so close!
    [21:21] DRD: he’s a techie!

  • I understand that people sometimes get distracted while driving, but is that grounds for crossing two lanes of traffic – directly in front of two other vehicles – to try and make it to the exit ramp that you forgot that you needed to take? The two non-turning vehicles were each travelling nearly 70 mph when the Jeep (Cherokee, I believe) cut across their paths. I should also note that there was another exit ramp less than a mile down the road where the Jeep driver could have made his course correction. Idiotstick.

Things One Doesn’t Expect to Hear in a Non-Hentai Anime
This came from one of tonight’s episodes of Silent Mobius. Like I said, I tried to follow it. Then this pair of lines came up and pretty much blew that plan out of the water. I don’t know the characters’ names yet, so I’ll just use generic ones.

Character 1: “Look! There’s a giant nest on Lebia’s apartment!”
Character 2: “She just has a big bush.”

Note: Lebia, according to this translation, was pronounced “labia.” Holy double entendres, Batman!

Question of the Day
I discovered a community called tonight. They look at your journal and rate it. Would you submit your journal for public review?

I’m a little torn on this one. I’d be interested to see how it fares, but then again… the whole concept of having it reviewed reminds me of 10th Grade, when we had to keep a journal for our English class. A journal that was graded. *shrug*

Namaste.

Thursday
I woke up this morning to see that it had snowed overnight. Snow. Definitely not the proverbial “April showers” that I remember as a kid. Although the rhyme never specified “rain showers” from “snow showers.” Damned technicalities. It snowed, intermittently, all day.

Song of the Day

  • Strangers in the Night by Frank Sinatra
  • Stay the Night by Chicago
  • Twisting the Night Away by Sam Cooke

Stray Toasters

  • One of the local radio stations has been airing ads for the upcoming Bon Jovi concert. The Goo Goo Dolls are the opening band. But, the way that the announcer says their name makes it sound like “The Google Dolls.” Either that or I’m in front of a computer way too much.
  • Someone posted a link to this tonight. Amusing, in a “no shit” kind of way.
  • I came across this site while I was looking for information about Danny Elfman being tapped to score The Hulk after Mychael Danna was dropped for yet-to-be-determined reasons.
  • A friend sent me a link to this item. Holy Tropicana Twisters, Batman! This must be the ultimate in Geek Cuisine.
  • I saw a new Verizon commercial – with the monkey at the zoo – tonight. It made me laugh.

Question of the Day
Wallets/purses and cell phones aside, what things do you (almost) never leave home without?
Me: Palm Pilot, sketchbook/pencils and (most days) my camera.

You have to wonder what the rest of the day will be like when you wake up, go to the Campbell’s Condensed Soup News (USAToday) website and see the following item in the “Offbeat News” column:

Libation taxation without representation
SALT LAKE CITY – Call it the Great Salt Lake Beer Party. Saying he was a prime target of the beer tax bill that mostly Mormon state lawmakers passed last month, brewer Greg Schirf says he will assert his free-speech rights by pouring the first kegs of his new 1st Amendment Lager into Great Salt Lake. On Thursday, Schirf says he’ll dress up as founding father and notorious tippler Ben Franklin, and, in an updated version of the Boston Tea Party, protest taxation without representation. With the tax now $12.80 a barrel, Utah suds are among the most expensive in the nation. That’s fine with Waddoups, who said Friday his main reason for the tax hike proposal was to continue funding the state’s anti-drunken driving measures.

Wednesday
Another windy/dusty day in the valley. And cold. Something in the neighborhood of 15 degrees colder than yesterday.

Song of the Day
No More Words by Berlin

Stray Toasters

  • When I went to lunch today, I saw something that I’ve seen many times before but never really gave much thought: The “graffiti” that people leave on hot air hand dryers. On most of the ones that I’ve seen, they have the following instructions:
    1. Push Button.
    2. Gently rub hands under warm air.
    3. Stops automatically.

And, this is how they usually wind up:

    1. Push button.
    2. Gently rub hands under warm air.
    3. Stops automatically.

Women don’t engage in this puerile a level of behavior, do they? Please restore my faith in at least half of the species…

  • It seems that the old adage: “March winds, April showers bring forth May flowers” was not written with Utah in mind. Because these damned April winds are blowing as if Thor himself was standing atop a nearby mountaintop.
  • While watching Voyager tonight, I was reminded of something that I’ve wondered about the bridge crews: When a member of the crew leaves his or her post to go on an away mission (even a “sudden” one), there’s always someone there… just hanging around, it seems… ready to take up the about-to-be-vacated post. “Ensign Johnson, your assignment on this ship will be to fill in for crew member X whenever we need him/her for an away mission. Otherwise, you are simply to stand in an out-of-the-way corner and be quiet.” What kind of assignment is that?!
  • “Reality television.” I’ve asserted my opinion of it on more than one occasion. For those who may have missed it: I don’t care for it. It seems that there’s about to be a new twist on the genre. This gem comes from Comic Book Resources:

WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPERHERO?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the WB Network has ordered up six episodes of Stan Lee’s and reality-show maven Bruce Nash’s new superhero contest “Who Wants To Be A Superhero?”

The show, would run in the vein of “American Idol,” but instead offer contestants a chance to create a superhero persona.

“The tone of the show is going to be fun,” Nash, creator of “Meet My Parents,” told The Reporter. “It’s wish-fulfillment, a blend of fantasy and reality. … It’s not going to be about sexual tension or winning a million dollars.”

The winner could see his character further developed by Lee and company as a comic book or other media production.

  • In “Truth Stranger than Fiction” news: Rob Zombie and Lionel Richie teamed up to cover the old Commodores hit Brickhouse for House of 1000 Corpses, a movie that Zombie wrote/directed. I’ve heard of unexpected duets before, but this just about takes First Place.

Question of the Day
Breakfast Cereals: What is/are your favorite cereal(s)?
Me: Total (original), Honeycomb, Honey-Nut Cheerios, Honey Bunches of Oats

Tuesday
It was a semi-busy day at work. Not a sweat-breaking kind of day, but I had things to do. And, more of them tomorrow.

It was windy and very (very) dusty. I’ve mentioned how living in the valley is like living in a snow globe. That applies when it’s snowing; on days like today, it’s close but not quite the same. The particulates in the air make it hazy. Grey. Drab. Not exactly claustrophobic, but you get the idea.

On the up side of the day: I got to hang out with Mary, Kristen and Chelsea for a bit. I stopped by Mary’s to drop off some books and we decided to get something to eat… so we stopped by the restaurant where Kristen works… and Chelsea and her friend Becky showed up while we were eating. Spending time with good company is always a good way to spend an evening.

Song of the Day
Monday (yep, I forgot it last night):

  • The Devil Is Bad by The W’s

Tuesday:

  • Suffragette City by David Bowie
  • Erotic City by Prince

Stray Toasters

  • The Crow: Wicked Prayer. Yes, another Crow movie. Starring… Edward Furlong. Hmm. I’m not sure whether or not this is a good thing. But, I’ll keep my fingers crossed, just in case.
  • Penny Arcade
  • Christopher Walken. ‘Nuff said.
  • Another unusual Samuel Adams commericial: This time, it was a business lunch setting. And, once again, no one noticed that there was a man attired in 18th Century Colonial American attire sitting in their midst.
  • Ringo Starr was on the Carson Daly show tonight – at the end of the show, he sang I Get By with a Little Help from My Friends. There was a lady in the audience who seemed to be having the time of her life to be standing there singing along with Ringo.
  • I got to watch tonight’s episode of The Adventures of Superman (the old 50s series). It almost made up for missing Smallville. Almost. Tonight’s ep was more than a little hokey… and that series had a LOT of hokey episodes. Tonight’s show featured (and I’m not making this up) a donkey, named “Carmelita,” that could read minds. It even knew that Clark Kent was Superman. But, the most bizarre/funniest thing was when Carmelita read a bank employee’s mind to get the combination to the safe… and then tapped out the combination on the floor to bank robbers. O_o

Question of the Day
What are some of your snacktime guilty pleasures?
For me: Popcorn, ice cream, Zours, Twizzlers (Strawberry), sweet potato pie or (when I can find them) Toblerone White Chocolate Bars.

Monday
Whew.
What. A. Bizarre. Day.

Work. It wasn’t too bad. Actually, it wasn’t bad at all. It just seemed like a long day – the first four hours took about three days to get through. The last half of the day seemed to go by a bit faster, though.

and a friend invited me to go with them to a presentation at a local model and talent agency. They were going because another friend of theirs works there; they were mostly going to help his numbers. So, I decided to go with ’em. It was interesting. The three of us actually did cold reads and met with one of the agents. She liked all three of us.

::: jawdrop :::
Nyx aced the cold reading, I did pretty well. She’s up for acting, if I remember correctly; I’m going mainly for voice (voiceovers, etc… not singing), but possibly some print ads as well. We’re taking a little time to brainstorm and decide if we really want to go through with this.

So, like I said: Whew.

  • What in the Nine Hells is up with the new Samuel Adams commercial?! A Revolutionary War-era colonist at a modern day party and no one notices anything out of the ordinary? Right.
  • Knotty pine.
  • To answer the question posed by : Could you describe a “not-well-spent day” so the reading audience has something to contrast this entry to? Yes, I could, but I like to think that most people can come up with enough analogues to poorly spent days on their own. Therefore, I shall not.
  • *sigh* This takes me back to the days when I played Call of Chthulu many rains ago, many rituals past…

    I amAzathoth!

Known as the “Blind Idiot God”, the center of all cycles known as Azathoth is the great void itself, infinite creation and inescapable oblivion made one. The Great God is without ego, as it has been embodied in a separate consciousness as Azathoth has cast off the curse of self-awareness. Surrounded by the host of flautist servitors, piping the songs of the unknowable, Azathoth is not to be known by his aspirants. That is the purpose of another God…

Which Great Old One are you?
  • From the If I Could Put Time in a Bottle news files comes this item.
  • It seems as though there is going to be a direct-to-video sequel to Timecop. Let the wailing, moaning and gnashing of teeth begin…
  • As I was continuing with my reading of The Art of War today, I came upon a section that made me wonder if anyone in charge of the current overseas campaign has ever read it. The particular passages that elicited this thought were:
    • When you do battle, even if you are winning, if you continue for a long time it will dull your forces and blunt your edge; if you besiege a citadel, your strength will be exhausted. If you keep your armies out in the field for a long time, your supplies will be insufficient.
    • Therefore I have heard of military operations that were clumsy but swift, but I have never seen one that was skillful and lasted a long time. It is never beneficial to a nation to have a military operation continue for a long time.

Sunday
And so, a new week begins.

I had been up for a few minutes this morning (thanks to Sissy the Wonder Kitty’s attempts to climb onto the windowsill) when the doorbell rang. This was roughly 10:45. So, I got out of bed and headed to the door. I looked out the door, cautiously… and saw a young man holding a Fast Sunday envelope for the LDS Church. This normally happens on the first Sunday of the month, but next weekend is Conference Weekend, so this they have pushed up the date for collecting Fast Offerings. *shrug* I’ll have to remember to be a) awake and b) cogent enough next month to remember to inform whomever arrives that no one here is LDS and ask them to refrain from stopping here.

I’m not sure what I want to do today. It looks like a nice day out; this seems to have been confirmed by the Weather Channel website. Part of me wants to head to one of the bookstores and do some drawing; part of me thinks that I should indulge in a bit of outdoor time. We shall see…

Yesterday was a good day: I woke up at 9:30, so I made my way into the office, plopped down on the futon and watched cartoons. And then I intermittently watched my inner eyelids. I went to lunch at Guru’s with before heading to the park for a bit of Ultimate. Aerobic exercise is a good thing. Tiring, but good. I came home, took a shower and relaxed a bit before bowling. Once again, we were subjected to people with minimal (read: “no”) concept of lane courtesy. On both sides of our lanes. They weren’t necessarily obnoxious, just annoying. Fortunately, , and I were able to (mostly) ignore the voices in our heads that kept repeating “Eliminate them… MDK…. MDK….” We went for our usual postgame repast. One of our former favorite waiters, Jaysin, was there. (He’s a former favorite because he no longer works there.) All-in-all, it was a well-spent day.

Stray Toasters

  • THX-1138 is on Trio. This is interesting, but I’m not sure if I am in the mood for it now. Aspects of it remind me of Logan’s Run, though.
  • I finally unpacked some of my monorail last night, to make sure that it works. It does. Now, all that I have to do is find a spot to set it up.
  • Need I make a comment about how tired I am of the coverage of the “War in Iraq?” I don’t believe this: A little marquee just scrolled across the bottom of the screen of the movie plugging another channel with news coverage of the war. I like information, but there is a point of overkill. The Duran Duran song Too Much Information and Don Henley’s Dirty Laundry pretty well sum up my attitude on the media, at this point.
  • Bless the “Shuffle” feature of Winamp. ::: genuflect :::

And now, it’s time to figure out what I want to do with the rest of the afternoon… and what movie to see this evening.

Friday
Today was not only the end of the workweek, it turned out to be a decent day, too. The weather, while still a little cool, wasn’t bad.

Post-work, I went to Sanctuary with and her friends Remi and Pedro. It is the local Goth club. Interesting place, but a “good” interesting. The bar had a fairly decent variety of frosty malt beverages on hand, too. There weren’t tons of people there tonight, but there was a decent crowd. I would go again. No arm-twisting necessary.

  • I stopped at the coffee shop across the street from the office this morning. It was my second time there, but they seemed to remember who I was, relatively speaking. I’m going to chalk that up to the fact that it’s a new shop and their clientele isn’t too large yet… and pray that it isn’t because of some faux pas that I committed the last time that I was there.
  • After tonight’s excursion, I may (may) want to reevaluate/revise my concept of what is and/or is not covered by the words “dance” and “dancing.”
  • There were far too many things to remember from tonight’s assorted conversations and breakfast. Among the ones that stick out, however, are:
    • The “ass-bra”
    • The Pocket Pirate
    • The Celine Dion and Alanis Morrisette clones two tables away from us.
    • Lack of sleep and its affect on awareness.
    • Conversations with polysyllabic words. Or the lack thereof.

Wednesday
That’s right… another day closer to the weekend. Today was a pretty decent day. No fires to put out; just a fairly casual day. The weather, on the other hand, was rainy. By the bucket.

After work, came home and had a bite to eat. And played on my bass a bit – Brian (from work) replaced a bad part in it last week and I got a new instrument cable from Chris today so…. I played. And it was good. I spent the rest of the evening at and Brad’s. That was good, as well. I even met the infamous Taz.

Tuesday
Had another “less-than-entirely-thrilling” moment at work today, but a chance to sit in the sun and read a little bit of The Art of War at lunch washed it away.

The best part of the day was the “non-Meetup SLC LJ Meetup,” as called it. Jess, , and Young Miss Fiona, Brad and I got together for coffee this evening. It was a nice way to unwind after work. Following that, we headed to Sampan for dinner. Good food. And our usual “unusual” dinner conversation.

Monday
This was a day (at least the workday part of it) that I was glad to see end. Not to say that it was a “bad” day. Far from it. It was just long. There weren’t any real problems, but I was happy to be on the other side of the door at quitting time. Oh, well… that just means that I am one day closer to the weekend. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Song of the Day
Get a Move On by Mr. Scruff (You might recognize it as the song in the ads for the Lincoln Navigator)

NPR/PRI Stories
I was listening to WAMU (from Washington, D.C.) since the KUER “Listen Live” server was full this morning.. After a while, I had completely spaced off the fact that I was listening to the D.C. feed. Around 4:00, during the local news update, the reporter was talking about local traffic on “The Beltway.” That got my attention. In four years here, I’d never heard anyone here use that term to refer to any road here. The Beltway (I-695) back home or the “Capital Beltway” (I-495) in the D.C. area, sure. Even the “Capital Beltline” (NC 440) in the RTP, no problem. Here, it’s “the Belt Route.” It was about another 10 seconds before I remembered that I wasn’t listening to a Utah station.

  • Spirited Away took the Oscar for Animated Feature Film last night. If you haven’t seen it, you should. Wonderful film and it makes for a great companion piece to Princess Mononoke.
  • What in the Hell has happened to Comics2Film? Last night it was there; tonight… nothing.
  • I think that there was something that I saw earlier today that struck me as “odd” that I wanted to post here… but I have no idea what it was. Should have written it down, I guess. C’est la vie.

Goodnight, folks.

Sunday
Ow.

That’s the word that best describes how I felt this morning. Frisbee and bowling apparently kicked my ass (and lower back and right knee) yesterday. Yes, they were fun and I enjoyed every moment of them, but…. Oy Gevalt! At least I did manage to sleep in until 11:30. And it was wonderful.

The first part of the day was fairly uneventful. I watched TV, surfed and chatted, and… did some more laundry. After I got tired of being at home, I headed to Borders for coffee and drawing. It was good; even joined me for a while. After that, it was off to Steve and John’s house for their annual Oscar bash. And it was, once again, a blast. I had a GREAT time. They throw amazing parties. Period.

Stray Toasters

  • They finally gave a release date to Phone Booth. I want to see this, but it’s a Joel Schumaker film, so I’m a little leery… especially after the Batman and Robin fiasco. We shall see… After all, he’s directed a few movies and music videos that I liked, so there is hope. Faint, but it is hope nonetheless.
  • Talked to members of the paternal side of the family today. All’s well with them… for the most part – it seems that Adam isn’t happy with the base that he’s been assigned to for the summer. In Texas. I’ll just say that he isn’t fond of Texas (for whatever reasons) and leave it there.
  • I bought new copies (read: “Replacement copies”) of The Art of War and Way of the Peaceful Warrior this afternoon.
  • Cafè Mocha and mini chocolate Bundt cake. ‘Nuff said.

Word of the Day
Harakiri (and the person responsible knows why)

And now, sleep….

Namaste.
