Sunday – 11 February 2007
I’ve been up, for as yet undetermined reasons, since 8:45 this morning.

After reading a few chapters of School Days, I decided to surf YouTube. This is what I’ve come up with so far:

I’m not sure what up for doing today. I should probably put some energy into figuring that out.

Saturday (coda)
Thank you to and for their kind hospitality. Spending the evening in the company of friends is always a good way to close out a day.

Guitar Hero. Interesting. I tried – operative word being “tried” – to play YYZ, but it just made miss my guitar and bass. it was still fun, though.

I should probably just go to bed now.
Somehow, I don’t see that happening. Go figure.

Namaste.

Saturday – 10 February 2007
Today’s been pretty lazy.  Which has been a good follow-up to a lazy evening.

Last night, post-Clitorati, I came home and played a little CoH.  I joined a team and we went looking for trouble.  We found it.  Out biggest problem: We had a bad team leader.  Our team leader – who was also our healer – kept acting like a petulant child.  “She” (the character was female and the player seemed to be female, but it is the Internet, so who knows…)  kept running into areas, getting attacked and then backing WAY out of the room and leading the bad guys to the rest of us.  That’s not so bad, in and of itself.  The problem came when she would run a good distance away from the action… and then want to constantly teleport us away from our fights to heal us.  Most healers – most good healers, that is – stay on the edge of the battle, but within their healing radius to heal players.  Not this one.  When we complained about it, she would say things like “Fine!  Don’t come running to me when you need me” or “If that’s the way you want to be, see if I care.”  After the mission was over, I logged out.  I wasn’t in the mood to babysit.

So, I sprawled out on the sofa with School Days, the latest Spenser that I’ve picked up.  And I started reading…

…next thing I know, it’s 8 AM.  I don’t even remember nodding off.  Oh, well.  I moved to the bed, where I remained for the next couple of hours.

I puttered about the apartment for a bit.  invited me to see Pan’s Labyrinth a little after 2:00.

I joined her, , , and a couple of her friends.  The movie was good.  It was an interesting counterpart to Mirrormask.

After the movie, I stopped at Dr. Volt’s.  There were a few things in my box, but I decided to wait until next week to pick up my haul.  I came home and watched the second half of the Pro Bowl.  The AFC won (BARELY!) by a score of 31-28.  And there were six (6) Ravens on the AFC squad, including Adalius Thomas, who recovered and ran back an NFC fumble for a 70-yard touchdown.
Now, I’m off to hang out at ‘s place for a while.

Namaste.

Friday – 09 February 2007
So far, it’s been a good morning.

Last night was a quiet night, spent at home watching CSI: and the beginning of Batman Begins. The closed out the Keppler storyline on CSI: and brought Grissom back. It was interesting – it went in a direction that I had not expected… although I could foresee part of the ending about halfway through the episode. It still had enough twists to make me go “Wow” at the end, though.

Thursday – 08 February 2007
So far, today’s been a good NBN Thursday.

I’m just getting back from the gym… where I got more good news: I decided to check my body fat and BMI, on a whim.

  • Body Fat: 10.7%
  • BMI: 25.8%

Compared to my numbers from September ’05 – 15.4% and 28.1, respectively – that’s a noticeable change. I’d even say “improvement,” although the general concensus on BMI is that it’s a load of hooey. That’s right, I said “hooey.” Deal with it.

[09:14] : Good morning, Dr. King.
[09:14] : Somehow I had gained super powers (still not sure what they were or how I gained them)

The day ended well.  I stopped to say “Hullo” to for a couple of minutes before crossing the county line.  As always, it was good to chat with him, if only briefly.

Home.  Some straightening and miscellaneous prep before Shadowrun.  The group finished off their mission… and was offered the chance to stay on the East Coast a little longer to see find out who is – or was – behind the attack on the team that they were sent to find.  Sounds like they’ll be hanging around for a while.

The Hand of Nefer-Tem patrolled a few neighborhoods in Paragon City tonight.  I’m still following up on the missing Warshades… and discovered that there are a few Peacebringers who are/may be in danger as well.  And, in doing so, I hit Security Level 12.

Another day in the grind. So far, it’s been good: We’ve been talking Star Wars and how it is that anyone who isn’t/wasn’t Force-sensitive could possibly pilot a speeder-bike – at 200 MPH – through the forest on Endor’s moon… and not end up splattered on the side of a tree. That’s right, we talk about the deep subjects around here.

Last night was D&D night. Things went well… and not so well. Have you heard about the man who was booking a flight from Germany to Sydney, Australia but wound up in Sidney, Montana instead? No? Well you can read about it here. Our party had a similar thing happen: We were, in theory, being ‘ported to a friendly enclave across the desert. We missed. We wound up not only on another continent, but in a city that was considered “lost” nearly a millenium before. Under an ice cap. Oh, yeah… it was chock full of undead, too. Yeah, it was happy times. While the denizens weren’t necessarily “happy” to see us, they didn’t attempt to kill us on sight. That was a definite plus. We didn’t stay for tea, although we did ask a few questions, and we were on our way.

Monday – 05 February 2007
This morning has started off well, so far.  Up, dressed and out with no problems.  The commute wasn’t bad.  And I just brewed coffee.

This weekend was… interesting.

Friday, before heading to Clitorati, I heard from Bill – the beloved of .  He called to let me know that her surgery went well and that she was recovering nicely.  She was still at the hospital, but would be home on Sunday.  After that, I was off to Clitorati.

Saturday… was a rather low-key day.  I had brunch with and her boys.  I took the car in for its 50,000 mile service and oil change.  I tried to get it washed, but a gentleman a couple vehicles ahead of me “broke” the car wash.  *sigh*  So, I went to CompUSA instead.  As I was leaving C-USA, I noticed that one of the car’s sensors wasn’t reporting properly, so I went back to the dealership.  Turns out that the mechanic just forgot to reset it.  No big deal.  I decided to try the car wash again.  This time, success!  I did a little shopping/browsing before heading home.  I fought crime around Paragon City for a bit before heading over to ‘s to watch Mirrormask.
She seemed to enjoy the movie.

Sunday.  No…  SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!   No, that’s not quite it, either….   SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!!  There, that’s better.  A lazy day, to be capped off in the company of friends watching the culmination of the 2006-2007 NFL season.  *bliss*
I got up, obeserved the appropriate hygiene rituals and headed to breakfast (we occasionally push Saturday night breakfast to Sunday morning now).  As we were wrapping up, I got three rapid-fire phone calls… which I missed.  I caught the fourth one.  It was .  She was a little panicked:

A water main had burst outside her apartment.  Ordinarily, that wouldn’t be a big deal, all things considered.  But, the water decided to find the “path of least resistance,” which happened to be along a series of tree roots.  The tree that belonged to said roots is right outside her ground-floor apartment.  Right.  You’re beginning to get the picture.

By the time I got there, the water was a little more than ankle-deep… and rising.  We spent the next little bit trying to move things out of the way and try to keep water out of the bedrooms.  The municipal crews showed up and shut off the main.  Good.  There was still the matter of standing water.  Not so good.  I headed to Home Depot and picked up a wet/dry vac – two birds, one stone: I needed a new vacuum anyway.  The disaster recovery crew arrived shortly after I got back; they pulled the water out of the carpet… and then pulled up the carpet and padding.  Correction: ONE of the guys did all that.  His name was C.J.  He did the work of three guys… while his coworker was in and out of the apartment and intermittently talking on his phone.  About two hours (and a dehumidifier and seven axial fans) later, they were done.  They pumped four-hundred-twenty-seven (427) gallons of water out of the apartment.   C.J. said that the average job was between 100 – 200 gallons.

After making sure that her boys – who were staying with their grandparents – were okay, and I headed to catch the end of the Super Bowl at Alyce and ‘s.  When we got there, I called so that the usual suspects could talk with her.  Post-game, showed me the halftime show, which he had kindly TiVOed.  Then, Wii gaming!  Boxing was fun, but whooped my ass.  Twice.  It was a good way to end the evening.

Welcome to the second day of Black History Month.  I’ll refer you to this post for my thoughts on it.  In a related note, while at Borders with last night, I asked Jessi (one of the asst. managers, I think) about the Black History Month displays in the store.  She mentioned that there was one upstairs; I commented, “Yes, tucked away nicely.”  I noted that I had been a patron of this Borders location for five-ish years… and that I had seen the BHM displays relegated to less and less space.  I added that Utah’s Black population is… small, to say the least… but that the lack of presence of a decent – not even large – display in the store was one of the things that I thought was sad.  She thought about it and concurred.  She also said that there were a few locations in the store’s planogram that were alloted for “discretionary use” and that she would try to put a BHM display in one of them on the main floor.

I can satisfactorily answer three, maybe four, of those.  I’m not happy with that percentage.
  • Kevin Smith posted a list of his Top 10 Movies of 2006 this week; he used a list of movies, from IMDb, that showed all domestic releases.  Using that list, I saw 34 of the movies released last year.

  • Bump Keys
  • Is anyone else amused/scared/shocked and awed or otherwise surprised by the Boston municipal government’s reaction to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force marketing campaign that went awry?

I was talking about it with Eric yesterday – he said something to the effect of “But, you can look at it and tell it’s not a bomb…”  I reminded him that he has an engineering background and it’s easy for him to look at the LED device and tell that it’s not a threat-inducing device… but the average Joe on the street would just see wires, batteries and assorted electronics and not know what to make of it.  He agreed.  Then he said that this went hand-in-hand with his concept of “Zero Tolerance” policies: “Zero tolerance means zero thinking.”  After he elaborated, I had to concur: People get so caught up in “Issue X” that when someone comes along with a zero tolerance policy that they are perfectly willing to stick their heads in the sand and take an “I don’t want to think about that!  Just handle it!” stance rather than evaluate things on their own merits/demerits.

Thursday – 01 February 2007
I was apparently very tired last night – I hit the rack before 2:00.  I noticed that I was getting tired while patrolling Paragon City.  I wound up turning off the alarm this morning and staying in bed for another… hour, I think.  Despite the iPod pumping out The Crüxshadows in the kitchen.  *shrug*  No big deal.  I was still in the office – granted, it was the SLC office – a little after 8:30.

The race with the monkeys wasn’t bad, with one exception: One “I should have left ten minutes ago” monkey decided that the best place for him to be was two feet off my rear bumper.  Oh, well.  When I got out of that lane, he zoomed past me… only to be slowed by a much larger vehicle.  Poor monkey.

When I got in, I fixed a pot of coffee.  While I was waiting for it to brew, a couple of coworkers came into the break room.  For the fourth day in a row, I’m wearing a tie.  Coworker #1 finally decided to comment on this:

Coworker 1: You must work at a Wal-Mart in the morning before you come here….”
Me: No.  (very blank, calm expression; level tone of voice)
Coworker 1: Interview…?   (the typical office half-joking tone and expression)
Me: No.
Coworker 1: Just looking nice?
Me: Change of pace.
Coworker 2: Eastern upbringing.  (We’ve talked a bit about where I’m from and the East/West Coast differences.)
Coworker 1: Ohhh….
Me:  *mental facepalm*

[19:31] : He’s been a senator for what…. five minutes?
[19:31] : lmao.

[19:32] : I don’t have anything against him. I just think that he should get a little more political clout – and know how – under his belt first.
[19:33] : Right, I think that is how I feel. Nothing against him, but nothing really FOR him either.
[19:34] : The best thing, for both of them, would be to run as a joint ticket.
[19:34] : Yes, they will most likely lose….
[19:34] : Hmm. that would be historical.
[19:34] : …but the experience for both of them would be phenomenal.
[19:34] : The first female president with the first black vice-president.
[19:34] : And, it lines them both up for a run in 2012
[19:35] : Frankly, they will split the Dem vote if they run separately.
[19:35] : But they would still be running aginst each other.
[19:35] : I could support a ticket with him as Vice.
[19:35] : Actually, Edwards – Obama wouldn’t be bad.
[19:36] : That would be better.
[19:36] : But unless she screws up, I really see Hillary being the Dem candidate.
[19:36] : Not sure.
[19:36] : There’s still a bad taste in some peoples’ mouths, no pun intended, from Bill.
[19:37] : Oh yeah. He couldnt show his face anywhere NEAR Hillary during her campagn.
[19:37] : I need to run. Can we pick this up a little later?
[19:38] : Sure.
[19:38] : Exactly.

Wednesday – 31 January 2007
I awoke this morning to find Mother Nature’s frozen mocking laughter blanketing the Salt Lake Valley. This was expected. As was an… interesting… morning commute. The monkeys did not let me down. When I got to work, John put forth an interesting assertion. He has classified a sub-genus of road monkey: Summer Monkeys. These are the monkeys who, in good weather, can be found on their cell phones, putting on makeup and generally befouling the roadways with their inability to consider any other creature on the road but themselves. However, these same monkeys curl up into the fetal position and cower in fear when the roads get wet. Or even moist. Hell, let’s go all the way down to “damp.”

I concur with his assessment. I also think that the UCBD should declare hunting season on Summer Monkeys on Utah roadways in the Winter.

So it is written. So shall it be.

Last night was good. After work, I headed to and Chris’ place for our new All Flesh Must Be Eaten/Warhammer 40,000 game. Would that make it “All Flesh Must Be Eaten in Warhammer 40K” or “All Warhammer 40K Flesh Must Be Eaten” or…? I digress. *sigh* It was good. My character did his level best to kick the bucket – bad dice rolls – but, he soldiered on, thanks to a timely sniper shot from ‘s character.

The Scales of Justice
When I got home, I read a little more Back Story, showered and took a trip to Paragon City. The Hand of Nefer-Tem had some unfinished business with the Council of Thorns. One of their leaders, a Madness Mage, and his followers had been studying/experimenting with the methods Kheldians used to merge with – or possess, in some cases – humans, in order to perfect their own methods of possession. Shadowcatcher, a fellow Warshade, had gone missing and was feared to be caught up in this scheme.

I found the Thorns’ lair. Defeated them. Correction: Defeated all of them except for the Mage, a Void Seeker and a guard. They were hiding. It took me at least ten minutes of running and flying around the caverns to find them after everyone else had been dispatched. I expressed my displeasure with bolts of shadowy essence and energy. Perhaps the judgment of Ma’at will show them mercy… for I had none.

Nor did I find Shadowcatcher. But I will.

Heaven Is a Place on Earth.
Belinda Carlisle said so.
Heaven is a Halfpipe
OPM said that.
Therefore: Heaven is a Halfpipe on Earth.
Hell is for Children.
Thus has spoken St. Pat of the house of Benatar.
We can assume that Heaven is therefore not a place for children.
Thus, children should not be on a halfpipe.

And thus, the anti X-Games campaign begins…..

They were using Blink 182’s Dammit as the background music for the commercial. Derek noted that it didn’t seem to be the most…. appropriate… choice of songs, given some of the lyrics. From there, we somehow connected that train of thought to the Internet. And porn. Which reminded me of The Internet Is for Porn. We watched. We laughed.
