Wednesday : 18 October 2006
Not a bad day.  Work was good; so good, in fact, that no monkeys were harmed in the making of this post.

After work, I got a call from Land and Catherine, inviting me to dinner.  We settled on Buca di Beppo.  We were seated at a table near a rather boisterous group; they didn’t bother me too much, but they were a bit much for Land after his day in the trenches.  So, we moved to another section of the restaurant where it was considerably less noisy.  Both the company and dinner were very good.

The Adventures of Indigo Bolt
CoH and CoV are currently holding their Hallowe’en event. Characters can “Trick or Treat” through the streets of Paragon City and The Rogue Isles.  I haven’t tried the CoV side yet, but in CoH – if you can collect four items and take them to an NPC in one of the zones, it opens up the fifth costume slot.  I hooked up with a few members of my supergroup, ran around Croatoa for a few minutes and the next thing you know… I have all four pieces.  I turned them in and *bam*  Fifth slot.  Of course, I had no idea what to do for the costume.   Gwendalion suggested making, appropriately enough, a Hallowe’en costume.  So, I did.

I even got a few compliments from other players on it. That was cool.

After putting the new costume together, it was back to Croatoa and Independence Port to take on some Giant Monsters.  And to die a few times.  To the tune of 232,000 points of debt.  *sigh*  But, it was still fun.  I teamed up with O’terra X for a bit, to help her collect pieces for her costume, before calling it a night.

Tuesday : 17 October 2006
I slept in this morning. A little longer than I intended, but it was good. Fortunately, the work day wasn’t bad. No monkeys. No emergencies. I didn’t go around humming “I’m about to whip somebody’s ass….” all day. (I did it a couple of times, for good measure, though…)

After work, I came home and cooked before kicking off the new Shadowrun campaign. New characters. New situations. And, for the next few sessions: New location. I packed the team off to the East Coast. More specifically: Baltimore.  We’ll see how they do.  I wonder what paracritters are active in and around Baltimore in 2070…?

Oh, to whomever turned down Utah’s thermostat? Turn it back up, please. Thank you.

Quote of the Day
World of Warcraft players Chris and Nox were tossing back “Yo mama” cracks before tonight’s game. Then Nox broke out with one that I (as a non-WoW player) hadn’t heard:

“Your mom is my epic mount.”

, Chris and I all burst into laughter.

Monday : 16 October 2006
Oy.  After less-sleep-than-normal, I started the day with frozen mocha goodness.  Things seemed to fall more or less into place after that.  Work was good.  As I noted earlier, I was rather amused by the song that Mom sent me the other day.  I shared it with coworkers; Jason and I walked around singing and/or humming it all day, as we dealt with various monkeys.

On the way home, I stopped by Home Depot to pick up a new shower head.  As I pulled into the parking lot, I thought to myself: “I wonder if I’ll see here…”  I got out of the car and headed into the store.  I found the shower heads, picked the closest one to what I wanted (without having to pay an arm and a leg for it) and headed out.  As I was checking out, walked up.  Serendipity?  Synchronicity?  I don’t know.  As Dr. Lou would say, “It’s just so bizarre…”  I mentioned to him a possible solution to my DirecTV conundrum.  He presented a possible option on it that I hadn’t considered… but I like a lot.

Home for a bit and then off to ‘ for this week’s D&D fix game.  Our intrepid band of adventurers made it to our current destination without much of a problem.  In fact, the problems didn’t start until we walked in the door of the castle.  And, even then, it wasn’t so bad.  Or so we thought.  Let’s just say that by the end of tonight’s session, we were royally screwed.  Buggered.  Rogered.  Fucked.  And that’s where we get to pick up next time.

Mom sent me an email a couple of days ago with the heading “A Song for Employees Suffering Mistreatment.”  I didn’t get a chance to listen to it at the time, but I told her that I had a couple of songs that got me through those days: Code Monkey and The System Administrator Song.

I finally got around to listening to Mom’s song this morning.

And I nearly fell out of my chair.

Here’s why.

Sunday : 15 October 2006
Today was an “I want to do something other than sit around the apartment all day” day. Of course, there was still a matter of getting out of the apartment. I chatted with while the Panthers – Ravens game was on; while we’re both Panthers fans, I wanted the Ravens to win. Go figure. They didn’t.  But, it was still a win – (lesser) win game for me. Post-game, I had to figure out what I wanted to do. Yeah, that went well. It took me a little over an hour to come to a conclusion; on the “plus” side, while I was deciding, I managed to unpack a few boxes and gain a little more real estate around here.

I headed to Beans & Brews to thin out the blood in my caffeinestream and then it was eastbound on I-80. I had decided to go part of the way up Parley’s Canyon, cut across part of East Canyon and then come back down Emigration Canyon into the city. I got to the East Canyon turn off and thought “I might as well go up to Parley’s Summit.” So, I kept driving. I got to the Parley’s Summit turn off and thought “I might as well go up to Kimball Junction.” So, I kept driving. Mom called about the time I was coming down from the top of Parley’s – just saying “hi” and seeing what was going on. We talked for a couple of minutes, until I got to Kimball Junction… where I did stop, by the way.

After talking with Mom, I stopped at the Tanger Outlet Center. Yep, as if there was any doubt whatsoever, I fully confirmed that I am my mother’s child. I went shopping. Well, more “window shopping,” but that’s really just a matter of semantics. First stop: Hanes store. No, that was the second stop. The first stop was the Jockey store, next door. I wasn’t in there very long – they wanted too much for scivvies. So, off to Hanes. I walked in and all I saw were bras and panties. Hrm. So, I asked the clerks if there were any men’s items in the store. They pointed to the back corner and said that it wasn’t much. Oh, well, “not much” is better than “nothing,” so off I went. Fortunately, their “not much” had exactly what I wanted and I walked out of the store as the proud owner of new drawers. Mm-hmm, that’s right! On to the Eddie Bauer Outlet. They had really good prices on some things. Really good. Temptation was strong, but I managed to resist. Barely. It was easier to resist picking up things in the West Point-Pepperell store. K*B Toy Outlet was a bit of a strain, but I walked out empty-handed. I wanted to buy a couple of things at the Borders Books Outlet, but I opted to wait a bit. Kitchen Collection was a different story altogether. There were many things there that very nearly made it into the car. But didn’t. By the grace of God. And the power of Greyskull.

Back to SLC. Up Parley’s. Down Parley’s, part of the way. Into East Canyon. Down Emigration. Past the zoo. And, since I was in the neighborhood, over to University Hospital, where I hung out with Allie and her brother, Aaron, for a while. Then, it was time to eat. Cafè Med was tonight’s choice… and a good one, at that. A quick trip to the grocery store and the day was more or less complete.

Four-Color Coverage
After picking up my books on Friday, I was looking forward to a bit of good reading. While I did enjoy most of it, the ratio of “good” reading to “mediocre” reading was a bit of a letdown. However, there were a few notable exceptions:

  • Emissary #4, 5 and 6 – What happens when, in a world without superheroes, one appears. How will people react? Is he heralding the Second Coming of Christ? Is he the Antichrist? Is he the advance scout for an invading alien army? How will people react? Oh… and what if he happens to be Black? Jason Rand and Christopher E. Long plunge readers headlong into this world and the reactions of the people in it. As well as the heads of the well-intentioned, but enigmatic, Emissary and the people who deal with him firsthand. I’m not entirely sure where the book is heading, but I am enjoying the ride.
  • The American Way #8 (of 8 ) – Wow. Didn’t see a lot of this coming. Nevertheless, John Ridley brings his story of government-sponsored (and created) superheroes to a close. Over the course of the series he showed readers “super,” “heroic” and just plain “human.” The characters were flawed. They reacted with an emotional intensity borne from the Civil Rights movement and Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Some of the heroes – and their handlers – get along. Some don’t. Some just… bide their time and keep their heads down… until duty calls. And in the end, it wasn’t just “duty” that called; it was Duty. With a capital “D.” The kind that calls a person to either rise above their petty differences… or wallow in them and fall by the wayside. Win, lose or draw. This issue wrapped up the mini-series in a good way.
  • 52: Week Twenty-Three – The issue started off slowly, but when it shifted gears, it took off. For decades, readers have seen the rage that lies behind Black Adam‘s brow. This issue showed something else: His compassion.
  • Ultimate X-Men #75 – This issue introduced the Ultimate universe’s version of Cable. And he’s not Scott and Jean’s (well… Jean’s clone, technically, but why quibble) son. Who is he? He’s [Message Redacted]. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Stray Toasters

  • I talked with Kris and Adam today. Things are good on both coasts.
  • On the way up Parley’s Canyon, Pink Floyd’s Learning to Fly came on the radio. At one point, I looked out the side window to see a hawk (I think) circling over one of the ridges. It made me smile.

Saturday : 14 October 2006
Today was a good day… and it went pretty quickly. I slept in a bit this morning, not terribly so, but enough to balance out the fact that I went to bed late… early… um… whatever.

When I finally got into gear, I headed to Dr. Volt’s and Jitterbug. Comics and coffee. *nod* Then, it was off to see the wizard! Ogden, to hit up The Bookshelf. I didn’t really know what I was hoping to find, but they didn’t have much that I was looking for anyway. I decided to check out some of the used books; that’s where I hit paydirt: I once again have a copy of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior. When I went to pay for it, the clerk asked, “So when is this movie coming out?!” I had forgotten that there’s an adaptation in the works.

Since I was in Ogden, I dropped in to see Dee, Kim and their boys. We passed a couple of hours catching up on what we’ve been up to over the past… far-too-long. It good to visit with them. We, once again, promised to keep in better contact with each other; I think that we’re going to try to catch Snakes on a Plane at Brewvies in the not-too-distant future.

Then, it was time to eat. After debating over what I wanted, I decided that Chinese food would fit the bill nicely. Next decision: Where? As I hadn’t been to David’s Kitchen in a while, I decided to go there. It was a good choice. Potstickers, beef lo mein and oolong tea.

Back home for a bit before heading to V.I. for Melody’s last Saturday there. The place was packed – they haven’t been that busy on a Saturday night in about two months. But, that just meant that the people-watching had more variety.

Friday : 13 October 2006
The work week is at an end… and it ended well. I had a case of “the Fridays,” so work was… work, so to speak. But, I managed to make it through. I met up with my friend, Georgia, for lunch at Thai Village.

Post-work, I came home and hopped on CoH for a bit. Didn’t really do much to put a dent in the XP bar, but I did have fun. So that’s still a “win.”

Off to Clitorati. Once again, put up a very good challenge in the crossword. We were a small gathering, but we had a good time. At dinner, news blurbs popped up on ESPN about the plane that slid off the runway today (with Yankees’ player Alex Rodriguez on board). That led me to talk (quite a bit) with about his thoughts on flying and his experiences as a pilot. I learned more than “a few” things about what goes into getting a plane – of any size – off the ground. Not so much in the sense of physics; he discussed some of the things that a pilot – or in the commercial space, the airline – has to do and has to know (or calculate) in order to be in compliance with safety guidelines and regulations.

Post-Clitorati/dinner, I went back to Paragon City. I got on a couple of teams. I died a couple times. But… I’m that much closer to Security Level 45 (three bubbles to go).

Thursday : 12 October 2006
I slept in this morning. Not intentionally, but I did, nonetheless. It had something to do with turning off the alarm and falling back onto the bed. So, an hour and some change later, I finally made some headway into getting ready for work.

When I got home, the first thing that I noticed was that someone had left a packet of dishwasher liquid and rinse aid on my counter. You would have thought that the first things I would have noticed were the new fridge, dishwasher and stove. Nope. I didn’t. It took a couple of seconds of mental gymnastics for me to go from “Why there would be dishwasher soap on the counter?” to “They must have brought the new appliances” and looking around to see them. Yep… I’m a genius.

After looking at the new toys, I played City of Heroes. And, because I was a little too headstrong, promptly wound up getting myself killed by a cadre of Nemesis soldiers and automatons. *sigh* I went back and – after devising one of those “strategy” things – I dispatched them. The rest of the evening was pretty relaxed. I watched CSI, ate, washed the dishes and then decided to take a bath. It was good. I read a few chapters of Heir to the Empire, I like it.

Not a bad midweek.  Not bad at all.  I caught up with for a few minutes this afternoon.  After that, it was off to meet for a cuppa joe.  We went to Borders and chatted a couple of hours away.  Time flies…  Then it was hometime.  came by to drop off a few things; she hung around and we talked for bit.  A little bit after that, I headed to the University Hospital to visit my friend, Allie.  was there when I got there; we watched a few shows on Food Network (which reminded me that I hadn’t had dinner…) and then started watching Mirrormask.  And now, I’m home again.  Jiggity-jig.

Tuesday : 10 October 2006
Today was fairly quiet and low-key. So low-key, in fact, that the day’s highlights include:

  • Recounting the amusing Four Corners “day trip” story for coworkers.
  • Watching Law &Order: SVU
  • Doing laundry

While listening to the radio on the way home, a Bruce Springsteen song came on. I don’t remember what the song was, but I know that it was one that I liked. That caused me – for an as yet unknown reason – to think about John Mellencamp. While I rather freely admit to liking Springsteen, it takes a little more teeth-pulling to admit the same about the former Mr. Cougar… but I do like some/most of his stuff. I can’t really put my finger on why it takes me longer to admit it, though. When you break it down, the two of them sing about similar themes/concepts, just from different perspectives. Many of Springsteen’s songs are about blue collar life – on the job, off the job and of talking about days long gone with friends over pitchers of beer. Mr. Mellencamp, on the other hand, sings about life in small towns, farming and whiling the night away dancing. I don’t know that I’ll put a lot of effort into trying to figure out why I see so big a difference in their music; instead, I’ll just enjoy what they put out.

Tonight’s SVU was good. Very good. It included an amazingly well-acted role by Jerry Lewis, as Detective Munch’s uncle. It was also the first time that I saw Connie Nielsen as Stabler’s new partner, Dani Beck. Hers is an interesting character – she seems to have a passion for the job that rivals the other SVU officers, but she seems to have a lot more anger… and not all of it is latent. I am curious to see what they are going to do in developing her character.

  • I finally hooked up a printer this evening. I went with the one that Dad sent me last month… or in August… or whenever it was. It hasn’t been used in over a year, but I did a color test print, to see if I could determine whether it was worth trying to use. Wow. It worked like a charm. I printed a copy of this – to be hung in my cube at work. It’s faster than my old printer and you would never know that it had effectively been mothballed for so long.

That got me looking at other magazines that were published on – or the week before – my birthday:

  • I think that I have come up with a great way for the LDS Church to reach out to younger members and potential members. Lots of people play World of Warcraft. LOTS. Well, one of the companion books to The Book of Mormon is The Word of Wisdom. Since it, too, has the initials “WoW,” my thought was: Bring the two together in a game. I’m not entirely sure if it should be World of Wisdom or The Word of Warcraft. Either way, I’m sure that they’d have a smash hit – not to mention a swell in membership – on their hands.

    Monday : 09 October 2006
One down, four to go.  It wasn’t too bad, for a Monday.

Work was.  Towards the end of the day, we had a mini-party for one of the guys on my team – cake and ice cream.  It was a nice way to end the day.

Post-work, came over.  We watched Heroes and kept track of the Ravens’ loss to the Broncos on ESPN.com and NFL.com.  *sigh*  Four and one isn’t a bad way to kick off the season, though.  We then headed to Outback for dinner.  I had steak, but I didn’t get my traditional prime rib.  Instead, I had a sirloin.  And Aussie Cheese Fries, of course.

    The Adventures of Indigo Bolt
I joined a team for a couple of higher-level (46 and 48) missions.  I went from  barely in Level 44 (with 60,000 points of debt) to four-and-a-half bars (debt-free) through the level.  If the team hadn’t disbanded, I would have possibly come close to leveling tonight.  Oh, well… another time.

And, and I finally figured out cross-server chat this evening.  We’ve had… issues… with it for the past couple of months.  Tonight, however, we got it right.

    Sunday : 08 October 2006
Today has been a fairly lazy day.  I woke up and meandered around the apartment a while before making my way to the shower.  After the shower, I meandered some more.  Then, I got a call from Adam – he told about his first few days on base.  Aside from some red tape and rigamarole, it sounds as though things are going pretty well.  When I finished talking with Adam, I realized that I was tired of looking at Intrepid sitting in the middle of the floor, so I took care of that by getting her up and running again.  Bonus points for: a) hooking it up to the Nine‘s secondary monitor (allowing me to have two “active” screens at the same time, thanks to the KVM), b) for having my mp3 collection back, and c) for finally getting the necessary video drivers to allow me to run CoH/CoV on Intrepid.

had invited me over to watch today’s Warhammer 40K game.  I did… although, one game (Chris vs. Christopher) finished shortly before I arrived and the other (Nox vs. John) was in its death throes shortly after I got there.  So, we sat around and talked for a while.  showed up a little later.  We continued to sit and talk.  Then, I realized that I was hungry and needed to appease my hunger.  The perennial problem: I didn’t know what I wanted for dinner.

I wound up at Super Target.  (I swear, that place could be considered my new Batcave or Fortress of Solitude…)  I walked in, got a cart, walked down a couple of aisles and ran into Lynn and Katarina, a couple of ex-coworkers.  I saw Lynn a few  months ago at Hogle Zoo, but I haven’t seen Katarina in a long time.  Lynn also told me that he’s started a podcast site, The Podcast Junkie.  I picked up a few groceries and cleaning supplies and headed home to cook dinner: Chicken breasts, rice and mixed vegetables.  I was even forward-thinking enough to fix enough to have a tasty lunch tomorrow.  Go, me.

invited me over to watch Without a Trace.  It was a good episode and one that took a slightly different tack than I was expecting.

I slept in until 10:30 this morning.  Of course, I didn’t go to bed until 4:00, so it all balances out.  I putzed around the apartment for a bit before managing to find “first gear.”  This included finally hanging some things on the wall, giving the apartment the appearance that someone actually lives here rather than just leaves things in random places on the floor.
I met Perry for coffee at Bad Ass.  After that, I came home and cleared most of the boxes and assorted junk out of the living and dining rooms – they are actually “company presentable” now.  Tommy came over for a while; we played HALO and fell into work chat and conversations about life, the universe and almost everything (but not quite).  Next thing you know… it was time for breakfast.  So, we went.  And it was good.
